much was decided before you were born (spectral door - spooky season two)

By neon liminal on October 13, 2024 9:30 pm

Spooky season week two was a struggle - my M8 battery is suddenly not holding charge longer than an hour, I can't seem to hear anything accurately, and it took three masters to get something that was listenable ... I just don't have the time I need to focus.

I'd aimed for something a little more low-key and open mix this week but I've arrived somewhere busier than I'd like. It's a learning process. It's also descending rapidly into industrial which I don't mind, but there's things I want to learn about mid-tempo bass techno that I'm missing.

Jenny Holzer truism this week is "MUCH WAS DECIDED BEFORE YOU WERE BORN".

Creepy spoken spooky poetry, by me:

It might not have been your original target, but I absolutely LOVE your industrial flavored dance tracks.

That trashy drum is great. Synthetic sounding BG vocals are fantastic. So much texture. I want to roll around in this track. Love how this has a solid dance feel, but brings the grit and texture. Amazing. Can Spooky Season be all year?

That ending vocal is everything.

MOAR PLEASE.

1st off - WOWZA. i know you had some struggles last week and this wasn't quite what you were wanting to make, but sometimes songs are unwieldy & have plans of their own. i personally love where this went and it feels like the perfect next scene building on last week's track. seriously, SO GOOD.

i think i mentioned to you elsewhere, but i've also had some weird hearing issues this past week. particularly with low freqs. feeling more back-to-normal today, and listening to this today vs last night was a much different experience.

the phrase "much was decided before you were born" - in addition to being so evocative - has such a great rhythm to it. i swear i was hearing it yelled in my head after you spoke it and the beat kicked back in. talk about spooky!

i'm excited to listen in on this journey  \m/

Very cool snare, and the eerie atmosphere is great! The synthetic sharply cut distortions are particularly delicious.

I agree, definitely more industrial than mid-tempo, but still very dope... The pads and melodic elements in this track are just so nice though.  Great dark tone, spooky ambiance... like if you pushed this more toward mid-tempo bass musicy vibes, I think a big gnarly reese bass way forward in the mix would pull away from those awesome pads and textural elements.  Sometimes you just gotta follow where the music wants to go... and this one seems to have lead you someplace pretty awesome.

Love the industrial sound to this that gave me some 90s NIN Vibes.  The drums sound so good in this especially on those snare hits.  With the transformer-esque synth lines that cut thru ooof yais!  The pad progression toward the end is spot on with those outro vocals.  Goosebumps on ma neck there yikes Def enjoyin these mid-tempo grooves.

Agree with Tone Matrix. 90's NIN vibes 100%. Spooktactular. Love that change up around 1:30. VERY NIN at 2:25 and on with that rhythm. Outro vocals, icing on the cake. This was killer!!!

this track gave me chills neon!  wow

& looking up jenny's work while listening - double chills

MOAR COMING. Three weeks worth at least. And as much as I'd like to do spooky techno all year I probably need to learn to make regular mid-tempo techno cuz I'll admit, the spooky aspects do get a little much when you're listening to it over and over while composing lol. Thank you!

Reese bass on the M8 is actually a fun challenge - this coming week's track has five of them lol. Thank you as always heart

Thank you heart Jenny is amazing. There's something fundamentally spooky and chilling about her work - circles me back to The Box by Orbital (Tilda Swinton's first on-screen appearance, FYI), where the shop window is filled with TVs showing the text MONSTERS EXIST. Scary stuff.

wow that video was super neat - had no seen that!  thank you - i need to spend more time with Orbital's musical catalog - Halcyon never fails to give me chills when i listen...

This is sick! the initial groove is so slow and comfy then the heavy industrial really got my head bopping. I don't think i've said before, but I really like the jenny holzer concept. Her art/poetry is really creepy (in a good way) and I think you do really well tapping into that. The spoken poetry is really good too. Nice track!
