BABY STEPS

By naught101 on January 14, 2024 1:13 pm

This week some techno. Wasn't sure I'd pull this off, but the loop is great, and expanding it into a track took heaps less time than I thought, despite work, partying, and getting sick. Good times!

The track name comes from the inspiration for the song, which is that I bought my niblings (one of whom is still under 1) a Blipblox, and we were playing around with it and found a really nice loop, which I replicated on the m8 (the main first rhythmic bass loop).

Probably not super well mixed, but I'm happy enough given the time constraints.

Feedback welcome smile

great bass line! i love the atmosphere in this track smile

Solid beat.

A real solid loop, with real solid layers. A very optimized song.

Digging a lot that’s going on here–the sound quality is great.   I’m a fan of the combination of that bass and the guitar-thing

It definitely bops. The bass sounds great (especially the sub-bass at 1:19) and the lead line is cool, I like those little triplets at the end of the phrases. You also did a good job of keeping it interesting from a moment to moment perspective.

nice bop! I'm pretty curious about the blipblox, I'd love to hear it on a track. I also have a young one and it looks pretty fun.

Thanks y'all!

Thanks! That was one of the focusses after last weeks' hip-hop beat that was (intentionally) very static. Having a nice lead line that you can make variations on is a fun and easy way to do this - you can really controll exactly how different you want each version to be.

Honestly, it's pretty terrible . The majority of the sounds coming out of it's randomizer are trash, and it's quite hard to tame them sometimes, even if you know what you're doing. And it's actually fairly opaquely menu-divey if you really want to control everything. Also the inability to edit sequences sucks, especially because most of the default drum patterns are horrendous. You can upload your own via sysex, but I haven't tried yet. Seems kind of silly that it doesn't have USB connectivity for this.

But that's not really the point, I guess, and my 3.5 year old nibling is very happy to just smash the knobs/buttons/faders incessantly knowing that he's having some influence (the knobs and faders ALWAYS end up all the way up or all the way down). I guess in a couple of years he might slow down and start to find nuance with it. It'd probably be really fun in the hands of a cluey 6 year old.

nice techno banger here
