Plasma Rain

Hey hey, this week I am getting ready for a family road trip, and wanted to brush up on my Deluge skills, so that I can get some jams pulled together while away from my studio proper.  So this track was fully produced on the Deluge.  I used a few presets from the Boards of Deluge collections (2 and 5 I think)... but also did a fair bit of sound design on most of the elements, and I patched the bass from scratch.  All the playing/sequencing, effects, mixing, and arrangement was done in the Deluge exclusively (didn't even use a midi controller).  I mastered the track in Logic, but really there's not much going on there, some VERY light compression, a multi-band exciter to get some subtle saturation (as saturation in the Deluge is NOT subtle), and a maximizer... so really very light touch in Logic.

All in all I'm pretty pleased with the result... we'll see how long that holds, but for now I'm not mad at it.  I will say that I'm more and more in love with the new Community Firmware... I'm using the 1.1 (Beethoven) Beta version and I'm so happy they poached the Mutable Instruments reverb algorithm.  Totally game changing.

The Deluge delivers great sounds. I like especially the smooth synths. You created an intriguing tracks, as if we're watching a crime story that takes us down the rabbit hole into a dark fantastic world. Beautiful.

Love the sound of that bassy synth and how it sizzles a bit on top of everything.  The beat and textures in this gave me some Watchmen vibes ala Sister Night hopping in her Buick Grand National to take care of bidness.  Excellent groove throughout.  Nice work!

injured my neck over here, just massive!
i love those pew pew fills, and the dancing synths on top are so spooky and enticing.
and yeah, that growling bass drives the bus to groove town   \m/

Whoa--this is a massive, stomping slab of music. I'm also really digging the delicate flute and glockenspiel voices over the top, too. Awesome stuff!

nice! Man, I've been so fixated on the M8 lately, I need to break out the Deluge again. Great sound design and overall great track.

Really fully encapsulates the cyberpunk vibe

Oooh yess. This flows, and stomps, along just right, hits hard while also floating. Love the dreamy bits especially. Bass is huge, sounds great sidechained to kick. Awesome you did all on Deluge! You're once again inspiring me to break it out install the community firmware. Appreciate your notes on all that.

I haven't personally heard of the deluge until now but I think it's really cool when you're able to write a whole song with a single instrument so I'll definitely check out more videos on it. Great cyberpunk vibes!

love how the track unfolds, really amazing evolution. The initial groove is very strong, really huge sounds

forecast calls fore a deluge.

really fun

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it... I really love that imagery, I'm glad it hit a "cinematic" vibe.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm honestly shocked the Deluge was able to get such a crunchy bass with a 100% digital synth engine.

Haha!! \(`0´)/ ... and yeah I do love me some 909 toms... crack up the resonance on the filters and dip it in some reverb, instant laser drums.

I love that description SOOOO MUCH!! I'm glad you liked the high end synths, I'm always trying to sneak FM synths into things, and it worked out ok... this time... (〃艸〃)

The Deluge is just such a powerful tool... and it just keeps getting better.  Open sourcing the firmware was such a smart move.

Yeah, I'm still pretty impressed how little was required in Logic to get a pretty clean sound.  The Deluge has come a LOOOOOONG way in the last few years.

Oh man, if you're a Youtube, gear rabbit hole person (and who here isn't really), you're in for a treat.  I really highly recommend Jeremy Blake's (Red Means Recording) "Basement University" (or some such) performance.  It's not JUST a Deluge in that performance, but I think it really highlights all the best things about it.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.  I tried some new things with staggering clip starting points and clip lengths, so I'm glad it resonated.
