Paved Rhodes

By Napear on April 14, 2024 11:52 pm

Ok, so this is easily the closest I have cut it yet... uploading with 7 minutes to spare.  And, this is more a noodle than anything else.  Recently got the new Rhodes V8 plugin (as a way to fight the deep desire to buy a Mk8 I don't have need OR space for.  So this is just noodling around with it using Andrew Huang's Bokeh preset... and as shocking as it is... no Replicka XT on this one... I did throw a little NeoVerb on it to make feel like it was in a space, but all the other effects are just Rhodes built-ins.  Which I gotta say I'm pretty impressed with.  Also I'm pretty impressed that they provide a free trial for the plugin, because I feel like there are a non-trivial number of people out there would get it, and be like... "well now I have ANOTHER Rhodes VST, I'm not going to use very much."  Probably a much larger number than are like "OMG... it sounds PERFECT!!!"... but I guess it speaks to the pride they have in their brand. I really wanted to be in first camp... but alas, I got the free trial, and was like... "yeah this sounds pretty good... but I don't know that I need it..." then I went back to Scarbee Vintage Keys and was like "nope... sorry bank account... I need the Rhodes V8".

This is a lovely noodle, and that plugin does sound pretty great. Looking forward to hearing it in your upcoming tracks!

Beautiful sound! It has a lot of warmth in the bass and the high lead sound like crystal. Beautiful noodle, good vibe!

I support noodling on e-pianos. Very nice sound!

I also looked into a Rhodes MK8. The translucent Decksaver-like lid is definitely beautiful! And a hardware Rhodes would just be an amazing device to own, right?

However, it turns out this is just a brand purchase. This current Rhodes doesn't have any continuity with the original company and products. And you know who purchased the rights? Loopmasters. So now the new Rhodes is a Loopmasters Rhodes.

And the hardware itself has a few weird quirks. Stereo output is only stereo with effects so the pickups aren't actually panned in stereo in any way. There's a MIDI output and a USB port... both of which are "reserved for future updates", which means they aren't functional today. And speaking of MIDI, I know this would require an entire Disklavier kind of mechanism, but MIDI input would be amazing on this. And there's none.

So all in all those things combined make me hug my Yamaha CP300. Stereo imaging, MIDI input and output (including via USB), all the effects you might want, great sound. In fact, last year I made a video with a blind test. Guess which is which and choose which one you like best! (just don't read the comments before you watch it all)

Lovely warmth to the tone.  The lower mids are nice and thick.  Almost driven in quality.

Bravo, great performance. If you're strapped for ideas, I don't mind seeing what you would add to this.

Isn't though, I have been exploring the various "Artist" presets as a way to learn like how to push it in different ways, and man this thing is capable of some pretty wilds sounds.

Neat video, and turns out I made a good choice...

[spolier=my picks from the video]
The sounds for all three were remarkably close, but I preferred A, C, then B but is was VERY close, they all sound really nice... A had a nice warm roundness to that is exactly the kind of tone I want from a Rhode emulation, C sounded a tiny tiny bit more digital, and I was REALLY confident that was Pianoteq like right away, which isn't a bad thing (Pianoteq is awesome)... And the only reason B came in last was what I think is damper noise... it was much more noticeable (given the same settings).  And I'll be honest I wasn't sure which was which between A and B, some of the mechanical noises on the V8 plugin are pretty striking, so I was a little worried that my favorite was NOT the V8... but again, they all sound incredibly nice, it was like the tiniest of details that separated them.

It actually does have a little bit of drive on it... there are a bunch of effects built into the V8 directly, and an a few came to bear with this preset.  I'm really enjoying exploring it.

Thanks, I may revisit this as some point, and I'll be sure to ping you on it if I do.

Thanks so much.  It's a fun plugin to play, I'm glad that came through.

If this is just a noodle, I don't think I could handle the entire dish. Very nice!

really pretty song. a really nice tune!!

Lol, well thank you, and that definitely makes me want to flesh this one out a little more... though I'm not really sure what I would do with it, to be honest.

Thanks a lot, I like the tune in this one, but something in it reminds me of TV show from the 70s or 80s... I don't know what exactly... but something about it has a late 70s area TV vibe... ┐(´~`)┌

Always love the warm sound of a rhodes.  Played one once wayyyyy back when i used to jam with a band.  Such a nice feel.  Love the tones in this throughout.  A soothing and meditative piece to drift away to.  Well done!

Thanks so much, and yeah there is nothing quite like the feel of a Rhodes.  Given more spaces (and a LOT more money) I would have a MK8, if only just for me.

such a calm and pretty track
dig the tone

I'm glad you like it.  I have a strong affinity for bell like sounds, so as a keys player the tone of Rhodes and Celestes are very close to my heart.  Come to think of it, I don't think I have used a Celeste on anything for WB yet... maybe I will have to break out the "Mr Rodger's Celeste" VST in the next few weeks.
