Nordic Wave

Ok, so we are firmly in speed trash territory here.  I have a huge school project due, and basically threw this together over like 4 nonconsecutive hours today.  The vast majority of it was done on the Sythstrom Deluge, so all the drums, bass, pads, arp, and one of the melodic lines.  I also recently got a copy of Disco DSPs Discovery Pro (which I'm DEEEEEEPLY in love with ♡ ~('▽^人)...) So the kind of bell like sound, and the synth voice that comes in near the end are both Discovery presets.  I'm not sure if I'm happy with the track, I probably won't be in a week... but I did get my Deluge workflow dusted off, and integrated some of the new Community Firmware features into it... So I've got that going for me. Which is nice.

Wish I could speedtrash like this. Love that chord progression! big_smile

Mmmmm, not trashy enough! More like a speedgem. Super nice beat, chill melodies, tantalizing textures, and enjoyable progressions smile

Napear, this feels... quietly triumphant! the perfect soundtrack to the beginning of a new week.

Thanks, and yeah I lifted that chord progression from "What Was I Made For?"... I moved it from C Major to B Dorian, but I only used the main harmonic idea, so it's basically just i-III-iv on a loop... but if it's good enough for Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell to win an Oscar with, it's plenty good enough for me.

You're too kind, but I'm glad that you liked it. I will say that I very much enjoy programming drums on the Deluge, because of some of the little tricks that are on display in this track.  The whole track uses exactly 3 drum sequences of 1 bar total each... and one of them is JUST the tom fill... and the other two are mostly exactly the same, but one has hats, and the other doesn't... so really the whole track uses a single 1 bar loop (with occasional tom fills) for the drums... BUT because you can change the length of each row, and set conditional and probabilistic triggers per step, it's super easy to make it sound like there is a lot of variation without actually doing much to get it. In this case, the rim shots are broken up so that some happen on the second of every two loops, and some are on the fourth of every four... and a couple are on the second of every six... they each have different phases when they line up, but how they line up changes from bar to bar. I used a similar trick for the open hats. So you can make what amounts to a very complex drum loop, in like 5 minutes, and with VERY little effort.  You can (mostly) do all the same things in Logic's (criminally under-appreciated) Step Sequencer, but it's MUCH faster (and more satisfyingly tactile) on the Deluge.

I like that reading of this... particularly given that it's technically a minor key piece... I mean Dorian is the brightest minor mode, and it for sure doesn't feel super minor in this piece.  But it's cool that it reads as triumphant.  I can particularly see that from the section that starts at 1:40... I might have to go back and closely analyze what's happening in this piece... some day...

^ POWER MOVE!

hell yes! such a good tune right here!! love it!

It's always interesting seeing what others call their speedtrash tracks smile  My STs end up barely being 2mins long and maybe I spent an hour or two on it and the volume/mix is off and blargh.  But THIS! feels like a calming ambient groove.  Speedgem sure ok! Trash no.  The kick snare is a nice combo to keep the groove going and the melody/progression is what had me nodding along and settling in.

Smooth and calming, and good sounds for that bird above. Yeah, nothing wrong with the "oscar winning" chord prog. Cool to hear about your Deluge flow. I recently got one (just got back from the oled retrofit), but I'm not fast on it yet, so much potential though, like what you called out for drums. No weekly beat is real trash right, well maybe, but not this!

I'm glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the kind words.

Yeah, I've had that thought too... like it's funny to listen to something I wrote, that I feel like I rushed and didn't give it enough care, and all I can hear is the stuff I still need to do to it... but then I listen to things other people make in the "speedtrash" category, and I'm like "... but this is so good though... I feel like I'd be happy with this if I made it"... I'm glad you liked it though.  I don't do a lot of Synthwave type things so it was fun to break out the XV-5080 samples and get some snares with gated reverbs rollin

Thanks.  Yeah the Deluge is like my personal G.A.S. avoidance box.  I have a pretty firm 1 in 1 out rule for hardware in my studio, to prevent being buried in gear... the only time I make exceptions is when something brings a whole new set of capabilities that I can't do with gear I already have... and let me tell you... that Deluge prevents me from buying like a LOT of things... it's absolutely the last piece of hardware I would sell (not counting my laptop).  Particularly with the new Community Firmware... proper automation lanes, MUCH better effects, a proper clip launcher view, and oh man the transition clip type...  Great device.

This has a great vibe. Love all the panning, subtle delays and reverb throughout on drums especially. The hi-hat feels vital rather than the "side-kick" of the drum kit I usually relegate it to haha.

this makes me feel happy

Thanks, I'm not sure why, but I always spend more time on my hats than any other thing when programming drums... it's always the most attention grabbing part of a drum track to my ear, so they always get a lot of love in my EDM tracks.  And, it's weirdly validating for someone to call them out, so thanks again.

Thank you, that's honestly the highest praise I could hope for... there a lots of things to be felt, happy is one of the best ones.

Speed trash crew represent! big_smile I love the result, definitely having a deadline makes us focus on what's important in a track. You're the second person this week (the other was ddmm64) who produced awesome synthwave as "speedtrash".

My only nitpick would be that the bass is really back there in the mix. But I guess it fits the contemplative vibe you went for!

Thanks... yeah, I'm not at all happy with the mix... like any of it really... I didn't really have time to mulit-track this out into Logic so I could properly mix it... not to say that can't be done on the Deluge, but I don't (yet) have mixing and automation stuff in muscle memory on the Deluge... so yeah... this really kind of one step past what I would consider a sketch... so I'm really glad the result comes of as being more polished than it really is (to my ears).

Awesome to hear this, yeah inspiring me to dig into it more. I have yet to install the community firmware, doing that this week! Love it as a GAS avoidance, it's so good.
