For You To Hold (by jwh)

Man this has been such a wonderful project to work on. There's been quite a few colabs over the past few weeks, and a non-trivial number of them have been with the incomparable jwh. This is one we have been talking about for a few weeks, and I have to say it was an absolute delight to work on. (If you haven't already, and you probably have), you should check out jwh's post for his video, and lyrics, and really do drop a comment over there, this track was very much his baby (vocals, lyrics, guitar, and bass all him), I was mostly just there to help dress it up a bit.

For my part, I did the orchestral bits, (cello, alto flute, string ensemble, etc) I got the core vocals and acoustic guitar early in the week, and it is just so tender and intimate, cello and alto flute were the first things I reached for. One, it was a perfect excuse to use the Tia Guo Cello and Gina Luciani flute libraries. I just love how expressive those libraries are and I think this song really gives them a chance to shine. And two, it was such an interesting compositional challenge because of the kind of key change, and emotional shift that happens near the end. Jwh was kind enough to walk me through what he felt the emotional journey was from his perspective, and it totally unlocked what the cello and flute needed to be doing for the second half.

I also got a chance to spend an afternoon on a video call, mixing the track with him, and it was a pretty rewarding mixing process. I really love how all the harmonies came together, and the general sense of space we were able to get on the track. It was very cool to work through the mixing process collaboratively. I'm pretty sure the song went in a direction that neither of us could have predicted at the outset, and I couldn't be more pleased with where it led.

It's amazing how energizing the music making experience can be, particularly when shared with generous and kind souls. I was definitely starting to feel a "mid season" slump setting in, but working on this song really got me fired back up. So BIG thanks to jwh for being willing to share some of his amazing talent and skill, and his willingness to abide my process. It was truly an honor to help produce this song.

This turned out soooo good!! Feels like a Sufjan Stevens song. Very expressive, well done

I already dropped love over at jwh, but I gotta gush here too. This is so beautiful and that flute gives me goosebumps and Moody Blues vibes in all the best ways.

Amazing work! Love the vocal layers and cello. You guys killed it!

Yeah, those orchestral parts really help tie it all together. Great work across the board!

it is very neat to hear this song reimagined with your touches
i was seeing flashes of franco zeffirelli films and feeling those vibes with your additions
& realized i didn't know who wrote the score to romeo & juliet - donovan did "brother sun/sister moon" & i love that soundtrack - anyway - josh has heard me play this song "a time for us" from romeo and juliet and i think what you did brought out that vibe a bit more here at least in my brain & i really love it

Nino Rota's music was so much a part of my sountrack growing up and I didn't even realize it

really lovely work heart

Again, no words, just a lot of tears held back. Every part of this track was hauntingly beautiful. Great work, what a magical collaboration. heart

Can't really put into words how much this meant/means to me. I wrote this song a long time ago, but it was kind of stuck in limbo... You listen so deeply, and it is a gift to be heard like that. You were able to gracefully pull in complimentary elements that took the song where it needed to go. Truly a spellcaster!

It was a joy to get to know you better, and I loved seeing your mixing and mastering process in real time. I learned so much! Thank you again for taking time out of your VERY busy schedule to be so present. I'm also feeling so musically energized and inspired, and yes... still weepy  smile

Since you split this submission between the two of you, I'll split my comment as well.
You've put down some very delightful sounds in this. Even the eerie part is very pretty. Kudos on the guitar in particular, very expressive.

Love the strings and the interplay of the harmonics and flute. Warm and mysterious feel... Creating a convincing sonic "space" remotely is no small feat but this collab turned out really well. Great work smile

gorgeous chamber pop. Amazing work on the arrangements, and the mix sounds great too.

An epic piece of music that should not be forgotten in the archives of weeklybeats. This should be spread all over the continents. I am fascinated by the instrumentation you did so well. Very very good.

Lovely song. Feels aplenty. Great production and additions!

Thank you, and you know I hadn't thought of it while we were making it, but yeah, it does have a Carrie & Lowell vibe to it.

I'm so glad you liked it.  I gotta say, so much of that expression for the flute is just baked into the Gina Luciani library... I LOVE playing instruments from that library, the alto flute in particular.  It's just soooo easy to get just heart wrenching leads from.

Thank you very much. I will (similar to the last comment) gush a bit about the Tia Guo Cello libraries.  In all honesty, I got a Musio license JUST for the Tia Guo Cellos... like everything else in there was just gravy... super tasty gravy to be sure, but gravy nonetheless... the Tia Guo Solo Cello is worth the price alone EASILY... just sounds sooooooooo lovely, and requires basically no work to get deeply expressive passages.  It is always the first library I reach for when I need solo cello.

Thanks, that was really the aim.  jwh already had the song written, I just tried to pull in a few elements to highlight what was already there.  I'm glad that came through.

(ノ*°▽°*) I'm soooo very glad that you like what I added, and I'm deeply honored by the comparison.  Nino Rota is such a seminal composer... I mean to your point, I don't think most people realize how much they have been influenced by his music, but I imagine most people (at least movie lovers) have been... but I could not be more pleased that the end result was evocative for you in that way.  (人´∀`*)

<(_ _*)> Thank you so much, it was such an awesome project to work on, I really do feel privileged to have gotten to be a part of this track, I'm so pleased that folks like it even a fraction of how much I do.

Thank you…(´人`●)SOOOOO━━\(´∀`●)/━━MUCH!!  I agree, it was a pleasure to work on, I'm so glad that I was able to help follow the song where it wanted or needed to go, in a way that you where happy with.

Thanks, I'm glad you noticed the eerie bit.  The string ensemble in that part, was kind of like... "ok... I'm gonna try something weird... so... fingers crossed"... and I think it landed pretty well.

Thank you, I had to write and re-write the harmonies for the cello and flute, like 5 or 10 times to get it to be what I wanted, so I'm glad that they resonated with you.  And yeah, I think we ended up using 3 or 4 separate reverbs, and 2 or 3 delays, as well as room mics for many of the parts to construct that sonic stage, I'm glad that came through.

Oh man... I didn't even know that chamber pop was a genre... and let the rabbit hole diving begin... thank you so much for the kind words, and, what I'm sure will be several hours of music to explore.

Thanks so much.  The instrumentation for this one is actually pretty light weight (on the orchestral side).  Solo cello and alto flute, which I have gushed about above... and those two instruments are a go to duet for me.  It leaves a lot of open space in the high mids and mids... BUT one of my professors is fond of saying "emotion comes from the low registers"... and cello is perfect for that.  It has such a large range, but also that lovely string timbre.  Alto flute helps to hold up that alto range, and bring the softness of the woodwind type timbre, but stays low enough to avoid "screechy" ~2khz frequencies.  Still warm and rich.  Very low in the mix we have two different string ensemble patches, one from Arkhis, which is acting as a high pad in the beginning and the end.  And in the middle it's a Fables patch, that has some granular processing on a pad mixed with a string ensemble and some tuned percussion, that has that eerie almost clusters feel.  Both Arkis and Fables are go to libraries for me, for quickly getting to those kinds of sounds. I'm a big fan of all of the NI "Media Composer" libraries (e.g. Fables, Lores, the Light trilogy, etc), and the East West Orchestrators (Hollywood Orchestra, and Fantasy Orchestra), because they let you get to patches that are very recognizable, while still being easily customized AND that are eminently playable (which is important for my process).

Thank you so much, I was really pleased with the production on this one.  I don't get to do much vocal processing with most of the music I work on, and it was just such a joy, not only to get to, but to get to process such incredibly good vocals.  It's like cooking a great steak... no matter how good of a cook you are, or what seasonings you have to hand, you can't make a bad cut into a good steak... but with a great cut... as long as you stay out of it's way and don't burn it, it's pretty much always gonna be good.  Jwh's vocals are easy to mix and process, because pretty much wherever you put them, and whatever you do to them, they sound awesome.

Just came from jwh's page and wow you guys did an awesome job!  A Beautiful song!  The strings, the cello oof! Love the quiet parts at the 2min mark.  Those strings sound gorgeous and haunting.  The more I listen to the track the more I get to appreciate that part.  I really admire your orchestrations.  The whole section just melts into the guitar and vocals so perfect.  That outro with the melody oof yes and excellent mix yikes  Beautiful song and composition. heart

Thanks so much, I'll echo jwh's comment, it's really nice to have someone listen so closely and notice the little things.  Particularly the transition out of the instrumental bit back into vocals, the harmonies there were pretty tricky compositionally, but jwh and I spent a non-trivial amount of time tweaking that section to get the transition back to the vocals juuuuuuuuust right.  It was one of the few places that we used volume automations, just to keep everything in balance, and to keep reverb tails from muddying things up... lots of tiny little details, but it's rewarding to know that they made a notable difference to someone who (presumably) didn't spend 5 straight hours listening to it on repeat (>▽<)

As I told Jwh on his page, this is such a beautiful collab that is soulful and emotional, and I’ve already listened to about five times. I’m really impressed with your orchestration talents and truly enjoy listening to your posts to glean as much as I can in my own learning process. Hopeful and eager to hear more great collabs like this in the weeks ahead.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm really glad the orchestration resonated with you. It’s incredibly encouraging to hear that my work is helping you in your own learning process. (⁀ᗢ⁀)♡ Sharing these projects and knowing they inspire others is really rewarding. Thanks again, and I’m happy you enjoyed the piece! (⌒▽⌒)☆

"mostly just there to help dress it up a bit". No way, your contribution to this track is equal, that flute is beautiful and those strings absolutely help elevate the emotion of the lyrics.  Thanks for sharing how you guys put this together, I was curious who started things off first.

Really great collab the orchestral arrangement is truly great and fits perfectly.

Ack, I forgot to comment over here too >.< Happy to give this track another listen, such a beautiful song with an incredibly thoughtful arrangement. Way to go you two smile

Thank you, you're too kind.  It was 100% jwh, who got things going.  This is a track he wrote a long while ago, and we were throwing around some ideas for things to colab on and he sent me a few things he had already in the can... this was among them and I zeroed in on it right away.  So for sure jwh's song, I just produced for this version of it.

Thank you so much.  I was a little worried that string ensemble for the middle bit would be to out there, but I think we found something that really fits the intentions of the track.

Hey, thanks for the comment.  I'm really glad this one has been so well received.  It's seems really rare (like speaking generally) to put a lot of effort into a track, to really like it, and to have others respond well to it... Like all at the same time. So it's awesome that all the stars lined up for this track.
