Emery The Phreak

Ahoy hoy fellow music nerds!  Well this is the first week that I hit the wall and had to really push through.  I have another big creative project in the background that is taking up a ton of my mental and creative energy... and then you know... life generally still exists.  So this one, is a liiiiiiitle more rough around the edges that I would have liked... but Jegasus said, "the Beats, they are Weekly".  I will say that getting back into the habit of finishing a thing every week is starting to bring out that deep desire to complete work generally.  And, I think there is great value in pushing through with creative endeavors even when they don't feel like they are/have come together.

So, with all that, I'm still in hardware land for this weeks track.  I only had one modular voice, but all the core sounds are coming from physical synths, and I think I'm really finally starting to figure out a workflow that I enjoy.  I ended up spending exactly the same amount of time on this track as I did, on week 3, and I got a LOT more done in that time, so, while the first "wall" is looming, I'm also building up a bunch of muscle memory, that I think will make pushing through it a lot easier this year.

I hope you are all as well as can be expected, and I'm looking forward to just vegging out and listening to all the awesome tracks from the week.

I wouldn't have guessed this was a hitting the wall sort of track as it sounds good to me.  There's a bit of a sci-fi feel to it as some of the synth noises sound like theremins. I'm just feeling a nice groove in outer space.

Yeah, love the dancey sci fi feel of this. Like an X-Files rave on the ISS.

The theremin-ish lead, drums and the bass all click for me. This is the track I wish I had produced this week. Way to  pushing through to completion in style.

love the sci fi lead with the deep bass.  Those outer edge sparkly synths are a nice touch too. Drums got me shaking in my chair back and forth!

gonna play this when i wanna walk around feeling cool.
see, like now. i feel cooler already!

That bass got bite, the texture's a bit like bowed double bass. And the spooky whistle's a perfect fit to that.

Nitpick: I'd go for a harder snare at some point. It was a good call to give the bass space at the beginning, but at some point we gotta take flight.

Really liking how dark and spooky this came out!!!
Also, I feel absolutely honored to be quoted here, hahahahaha...

The beats do be weekly. But, as you said, you're flexing those creative muscles and learning new things in the process to improve your workflow. I think this came out pretty cool with the tones giving off a spooky mansion kind of vibe smile

You won a million points for knowing Sneakers. Definitely one of my fave movies. A common test for friends is if they know "I leave message here on service but you do not call" lol

This is a great hardware performance and a really good mix. I wanna echo RPLKTR and say that your perc can do a little more work and it could be fun to see how you can make the drums evolve across the arrangement. Your voices (ha deckards) are really punching through beautifully but the drums could help out a but more lol. Great track!

would not have gotten this reference without neon - but now I want to rewatch - dig the whistle!

Thanks, and yeah, that "whistle" type sound, when I was flipping through presets and just noodling, I heard the sound, and I couldn't stop my hands from playing the X-Files theme... then there was just no way to NOT use the patch (つ≧▽≦)つ

... lol... funny you say that... see the above response re: X-Files.  But I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks, yeah, I feel like that was the super power I came out of my first WB with... the ability to push through and make something, even when I didn't want to, and even when I didn't like what I was making. Like piece of art has an ugly phase and even if it never feel like it's left that phase to me, is no reason not to share it... and move on.

Thanks, I mentioned this above, but I couldn't NOT use that lead once I heard it... it was so exactly the X-Files sound that my brain would not let me use anything else... for better or worst.

You're too kind sir.

Yeah, I think you nailed it. I feel like this track is missing a bunch of transitional elements, and then the drums were just not doin as much work as they could have.  I think I got into a doom spiral, and just couldn't hear how to improve things after a point, but I can totally hear what you're suggesting now.

Lol, well I'm glad you were into that sci-fi monster mash vibe.  And, for the record, your enthusiasm, and the general energy you bring to the WB community is a consistent source of inspiration for me.

Well, thanks, and yeah, I'm very likely going to come back to some of these preset... that whistle is just too much.

Seatec Astronomy (☛´∀`*)☛ ... majorly influential film for me. Yeah, I agree... I think the energy levels of the track are pretty flat, and not well punctuated, which for sure could be improved by being a little more deliberate with the drums, and the transitions.  But good practice requires such lessons.

Lol, I mean, Sneakers is arguably the best "hacker" movie ever made... so, most always worth a rewatch... and yeah the whistle... I'm for sure coming back to that patch at some point.

that ghostly lead is awesome!
