Cardinal Direction

By Napear on January 11, 2026 7:04 pm

Well here we are in week two... starting to get int to a rhythm... I mean, I guess pun intended.  It's funny though because last week I talked about how my larger intention was to develop my skills with hardware, and here I am this week with a track fully made in the box... but I guess there are still 50 more weeks right, they don't all have to be in pursuit of one goal, so long as I'm makin' music.

I had a VERY compressed timeline this week, and ended up with only about 7 hours in the studio.  But, that kind of worked out perfectly, because my wonderful partner asked me to put together a lofi/focus album that she can play in her classroom as background when folks are doing dedicated focus work.  And lofi is one of my go to genres when I'm under significant time pressure... so two birds one Zoom recorder I guess.

The foundation of the track is built off of a field recording I took while she was photographing birds in one of her favorite spots.  And the footsteps at the end are her walking by the mic.  After that, just a couple layers; one of my favorite Claire presets for the piano, and a random patch from Homage for the lead (which is where some of the vinyl crackle is coming from).  And, the cello is the incomparable Tina Guo Solo Cello library from Musio... there are a bunch of good sounds in the Musio/Cinesamples collection... but a couple years ago they sold everything they had (as part of the Musio rebrand launch) as one bundle for $300, and to this day, it's the best dollar for dollar VST library purchase I have ever made... kinda for that cello alone.

At any rate, this is one of those tracks that felt like it spent a LONG time in the ugly phase, and I'm still struggling to really like it, so I would love any constructive feedback anyone might have on how can I improve the mix, or composition (for the next few). But either way week two in the book folks, only 50 more to go.

great lofi vibes. and love that you're using a field recording you took while she was bird watching to put into a song for her lofi background music request! that's extremely good shit.

The beat sounds excellent here, both in the mix and with the overall rhythm. It was really nice when the drums took a step back and held things together when the cello was introduced. Very nice vibes throughout!

By the way, I think it's super cute you and your partner go out into nature and engage in your individual creative hobbies and photography and field recording, haha.

Instant head nod. The nature sounds are a beautiful touch. Evocative, safe, and transformative. Love it.

The piano, synths, cello, and nature sounds combine to create a real peaceful, relaxing, and serene vibe.  The beat was really cool and added a head-bopping edge to it.

honestly, i think field recordings in music that you took yourself are some of the most personal and beautiful things heart I go absolutely crazy for them.

this is a lovely scene.

lofi beats to walk through the woods to. love it. the piano line is beautiful. this is shockingly peaceful and hopeful. I couldn't figure out what the other comments were talking about because the cell comes in so deep into the track, but they're absolutely right. it's a great addition that really solidifies the vibe.

really nice track, love how everything sits, and if you are reading this as you listen the cello really does shine, well done, wait for it.

I know some of those birds! Its really nice how they play through at times almost like part of the rhythm. Really nice chill track heart

Also nothing wrong with the box. I'd argue just about everything needs to end up there anyway (... always does for me)

omg this is all so damn ROMANTIC i can't handle it. SWOON!  heart

love love love the way the field recording works with this track. and hoooo when that cello comes in...

constructive (hopefully) feedback, because you asked (and keep in mind i've not spent a lot of time listening to this style of music, so grain of salt)...

i almost felt like the drums were a little too hi-fi, too crisp? like the beat felt right, but sound-wise the drums felt a *little* disconnected from the rest of the instrumentation. if i was mixing i would probably hit them with some tape (haha shocker, i know) or something like that, maybe whatever you are using to make some of the other sounds feel a little woozy/ bleary?
or even just a tape sim on the master bus might pull things together a little more.
and there were a few parts where the bass felt like it was rushing just a little? i kinda like bass a little behind the beat though, so again - this could just be me.

those things didn't pull me out of the song though. really lovely work!

oh wow that piano intro sucks you in right away. This has a great almost happy vibe... some kind of hope even though it's still cloudy outside, at least it stopped raining

The cello coming in is lovely and amplifies that longing feeling

don't have much feedback or the mix, it seems good enough, maybe the drums could be pushed back a little, more reverb? I feel they are a bit punchy for what the song requires, but that's just me trying to nitpick at something as per your request ;P

Daaaaamn that cello is worth it. What a vibe. The footsteps are a great ending.

Only because you asked, I wish the piano was up front in the mix with the (fantastic) drums, I think it would have glued the whole thing together a little more.

What really matters here though are the textures and the vibes, all of which are excellent!

That’s a lovely story, which makes wanna share the song I made for my wife when she was home laboring our first son. And it was my first opportunity to compose an ambient music that doesn’t sound fatiguing on repeat. It turned out great, and for a little while after my son was born, we played this song to calm him down when he was fuzzy at night.

If anyone is interested you can find it on major streaming platforms by search “jiaam-ka” and “December”

I love the beat!  such a groove!  and the cello oof sooo good!  Such a lovely vibe heart yay box!

Beautiful track, I love the bird sounds. I envisioned myself walking through a bird sanctuary or botanical garden and this was the soundtrack. And the crunchy steps in the end are so great...adds a really beautiful organic/human element to tie a bow on it. I love it!

Really nice work, love the drums, nice and punchy but still sit well in the mix. Great job!

Lovely. What a pleasant listen.
Don't let the DAW/hardware dichotomy bring you down yo, it's all about making cool music anyway. And you made some real cool music

Yes yes the field sounds are great, such lovely melody and interplay here ... oh that cello, gotta close my eyes and just let that overtake the senses!

Very lovely. Definitely feeling you about the “ugly phase”, was feeling that for my entry but was able to make come together in the end which I’ll say you pulled off beautifuly.

Thanks, yeah, I figured the whole point of the track was help her get into the zone, and subconiously the sounds a place she is mostly in the zone would help to build that vibe.

I do love those drums, the come from the Empire Breaks VST, which I find to be a really nice middle ground between programming all my own drums and like just stitching together loops.  And yeah, she and I are both kinda "outside cats", her being a nature photographer kinda just gives me an excuse to go on pleasant hikes, and do some bird watching and the like... so collecting nature sounds is just a cherry on top.  But it is nice that we have overlapping interests in that way.

I'm glad you liked it, I need to find more reasons to use field recordings.

Thanks, I think I reached for the cello because I was struggling with the lead and bass so much I needed something I knew I would like... I do think it brought the whole thing together.

You know it's funny too because I have hours of field recordings, that I find I don't use as much as I probably should... I guess I enjoy listening to the world through a mic more than I do actually using the recordings... well... new goal for this years WB... use more field recordings (>▽<)

Lol... yeah, I have a way about adding cello as a "bring home" kind of instrument.  And thanks, I started the whole track with the piano (as I often do with these kinds of tracks), so I'm glad it carried the right vibe.

Yeah, I thought that particular clip worked weirdly well; because it's not looping at all... the actual field recording is like 15 minutes long so I just grab a section where the birds were a little more vocal at to start from, and then just let it run.  I mean, I did dub in the walking for the end, but like other than that it's just what the birds actually sounded like, and the ebb and flow of there calls just kinda worked.

And, yeah, I mean most of what I do is in the box, I don't think there's anything wrong with working in the DAW.  I certainly wouldn't have been able to finish any of my big school projects (on time) if I was like a hardware "purist".  Really the reason I want to push myself to focus on hardware tracks for WB is kind of to make me better in the DAW.  I find WB to be very much a musical gym, that I can use to train and improve my skills; and I figure if I can get to the point (by the end of the year) where I can produce and mix tracks, to a level that I'm satisfied with, using only my hardware, then how much better will I be without that restriction. Like jogging with weights on...

So I don't disagree with you at all, and yeah everything will end up in the DAW... like all my mastering work is gonna be in the box... I'm just trying to push myself, and develop new skills you know.

Thanks, I'm just really glad that she liked it... like I had to do work to not express that I wasn't satisfied with it when I asked her to listen, so that she could experience it as unbiased as possible.

BUT DUDE... you nailed it... thank you... I could not figure out why I was getting these like cringey shutters (⦩_⦨) while listening to certain parts... I knew it was something to do with how the bass and the lead were interacting, but you nailed... the bass is rushed... it just not in the pocket with the drums.  OOHHHHHHH that's such a relief... it was killing me and I couldn't put my finger on.  THANK YOU!!!

And yeah I can hear what you mean with the drums, I think it's partly a reverb thing.  I like to use a master reverb, that I send all my busses to, to create a unified space... but a personal pet pieve of mine is when recordings of outside are sent through a reverb... like it just doesn't make sense... so I did some experimentation with MTurboReverb to get something that had a more "open space" vibe to it... and the drums made that reverb sound weird, and I didn't put as much love into building out a bespoke processing chain that would pull them into the same "space" as the bass and the lead... but I will try to keep that in mind when I do a more proper mix.

Thanks again, SUPER useful feedback (as always)

Thank you, I love that cello library, and yeah, I totally agree with the reverb comment on the drums (see my response to JWH above).  Definitely something I will revisit when I circle around to a proper mix and master.  Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks so much,  I really was proud of the footsteps as an outro... one of those like I was just listening to the recordings, and I heard those and it just lit that spark of like "oh THAT is the ending..."

Thanks, I'm glad the vibes landed.  I tend to agree with the piano being more prominent... I think I pushed it back in the mix because every thing felt too "busy"... but I'm realizing now that it wasn't really a busy problem, as much as  that I just wasn't loose enough when playing in the bass parts.  So, I'll experiment with pulling the piano forward when I circle back to it.  Thanks again, I always appreciate constructive feedback.

I think I have mentioned my love/hate relationship with Native Instruments in the past... and for as much as their software and (lack of) support annoys me... man those Play Series drum VSTs... so fast to build just dope grooves with.  And yeah, that cello sound is like easy top 5 favorite VST. It's so expressive right out of the box.

Thank you so much... and yeah the field recording was captured in a botanical garden, so I'm glad it was evocative in that way.

Thanks so much, I have gushed about the drums a bunch in some of my above responses, but yeah, those Empire Breaks.

Thanks, and yeah, I'm not too fussed about the DAW v. Hardware thing... as mentioned in the above response to Neon Liminal, it's less about like being a purest one way or the other and more just I'm trying to challenge myself this year specifically to grow my skill set... but the time crunch for week two had me falling back to the familiar... which is fine... to be expected even... just calling it out to keep my longer term practice goals in sight I think.  But I do appreciate the encouragement, comments like yours are what make WB so motivating.

I'm glad you're into it.  Expect more of the cello this year... I have a bunch more vibey mellow tracks I queued up.

what a great prompt  - you met the brief so beautifully

i used to do some substitue teaching as an aid to a musical friendly teacher - it was so interesting to observe how different music with shift mood/productivity etc. in the classroom

please share with wonderful partner this album - used to get students really calm and focused but not falling asleep

Thank you so much, I’ll pass along the recommendation.  And yeah it’s amazing how much the soundscape of a space affects how people act in that space.  It’s honestly my favorite part of going to museums and the like… just thinking through the choices (or lack there of) that people have made about the sounds of the space where an exhibiting something that is not sound… if that makes sense.

When I saw you ask for feedback, I was ready to give you a laundry list of stuff. Cracked my knuckles, put my monocle on. But in the end the track's pretty good as is.

My only piece of feedback is that some of the looseness you employed this week goes a little wide. Stuff like the drum fill at 01:34 that's just late. Making those kinds of things somewhat tighter would help.

Lovely little pun! Refreshing track, like a nice fluffy woodwind bed.

Oh man... now I need to get a "feedback monocle"... As always, thank you for giving it a critical listen, and yeah looseness of the drums is a tricky one... my default is "overly robotic" so it's always hard balance to strike, but I have at lease 7 or 8 more of these kind of tracks slated for the year, so I will keep that in mind.

Stenny wrote:

I was wondering if anyone was gonna call that out.  My partner has an affinity for puns... though I tend not to enjoy most puns, I can always respect a good double entendre... and given that the cardinal singing in the field recording, kinda set the tempo for the track... it felt like there was no other name for it σ(*´∀`*).

This is absolutely lovely!

Also lol'd @ "two birds one Zoom recorder I guess."
