Thank You Plant Medicine

By myfirstpunksong on February 20, 2022 8:13 pm

Whoops. Actually kinda embarrassed to post this one.
This week got kinda stuck. Had an idea on guitar on Sunday last week. Played around with it but couldn't quite figure out how to advance it. Then started a new idea midweek which I thought was cool and wanted to record, but then felt I didn't have enough time to flesh it out as I'd like. I took a couple days off and then found myself today on Sunday without anything. I pulled up an old garageband project and knocked out some vocals and lead guitar. Roughshod and sloppy as. I'll keep reminding myself that I'm using weekly beats as a process rather than outcome goal, and as dissatisfied and uncomfortable with sharing as I am with this piece, I'm still glad I had a go and got some time in the studio.

What went well:
- Got a couple new ideas I like through the week, in anticipation of weekly beats.
- Still made time to play around with a project on Sunday.
- Was fun singing. Even if the vocals are piss poor, getting a better sense of the vibe/attitude of vocals I wanna have in my music.

To be improved:
- Pretty much all constituent parts of this track. Feel everything here is total throwaway.
- Perhaps just commit to a project earlier in the week.
- Perhaps start sending ideas over to friends for ideas and contributions earlier. Coulda probably done with a Rizzy P lead on this.

Additional Notes:
- If I'm gonna be doing vocals, I really need to leave more time work on lyrics. I just can't hurry them out.
Final Note:
- Today (Feb 20th) is Thank You Plant Medicine Day. I wanted to do a track around this theme, but didn't make it. However, I can still share here! Psychedelics are awesome. TYPM.

yeeya! move fierce with that vision!

I think you're being overly harsh. This definitely has the vibe. I think the verse melody, while simple, gets the job done. Sorry to say I couldn't understand the lyrics, though.

During the middle section when you go with a single note on the vocals, I think there's a great opportunity there for multiple layered vocals, either singing same note to fill it out, or possibly harmonies.

I like your idea about process over product. I had a really hard time committing to something this week too. I keep thinking that I'd love to get a week ahead of the game and basically have 6 days to dial in the song I've mostly recorded the previous week, with less time pressure. Not sure how to make that happen without deliving a fiery turd on the front end.

ps - you should add tags to your songs. I try to listen through everything tagged rock, guitar, etc every week.

Rock yeah!

Love the energy, this is an in your face track, and there is a lot there for an only 1m06 song. Guitars sounds super big.

Trash punk is really just punk if you think about it

I liked how you left notes on what you learned.  I need to keep notes.

I'm not sure what could be considered embarrassing about this?  I do like punk vocals that get wild and howling, so that's cool in my book
