Hi there - welcome to week 8. I'm glad you're here!
‹ Production notes
I've been avoiding square waves in my music production. It's a comfort thing. I like how my saw pads and plucks sound, so I stick with them, afraid of the unknown. At the same time, I've been super inspired by all the awesome chiptune artists on here (shout out to laamaa, Disposable Planet, Vivi and Apticx!)
.
To push myself out of my comfort zone, I decided to try to make an M8 chiptune track with the following constraints:
- only 4 tracks
- square waves and chippy noise from wavsynth
- no effects, no filters, no fancy modulation; just dry signal everything
My biggest discovery this week was that reducing the complexity of the track gave me more time and space to use melody, rhythm, and note velocity in to create movement. Although this was written and recorded on the m8, it would be fairly straightforward to port to LSDJ. That's going to be an exercise for future me because I'm out of time this week
