Marshmallow Test

By MRDRCAT on August 4, 2024 9:52 pm

Still trying to slow things down and declutter my tracks. This time around I made an effort to use more instruments for a bigger variety of sounds (I tend to approach these like a 4-piece band, only having a few sounds that don't change much). Sorry about the clicking in the S&H part - since I'm not using the envelope I don't know how to compensate. The track was originally built around the weird little harpsichord part, but that kept getting pushed farther and farther into the background as I went. Render is right out of the M8 with just a little compression. Kick might be too much. Title was inspired by the random times I withhold the last note until a bar or two after it really should happen. #deferredgratification

Your effort paid off! Love the blended textures you have going on. There's a lot more...accents?...of sound going on, it really fills out the track. I like your style anyway, but it just makes the tracks feel...more? It's like it's more...dense? Words, how do they work? Descriptions fail me tonight. It sounds great! Also, not too much kick, I'd say it was perfect.

The kick is just fine! I struggle to bring my kickdrums out in amidst all the bullshit I throw in, yours sits perfectly.
Really enjoyed all the sound design and progression with it. It never felt too full and every instrument had very clear definition.

This was great!!! Like BarristerPlong, too cannot hear any issue with the kicks here. The quiet part at 1:35 is probably my favorite section. Super fun!

Kick sounds ok on my system. Digging the harpsichord and dirty thing behind it.
Nice!

these are nice marshmallows. they would make a good s'more.

woah, super cool! and yeah - kick sounds great to me
wonder what a kick drum would sound like if it was filled with marshmallows??

I really liked this. The intro hooked me right from the beginning! I like the different blend of instruments that you have. They all work really well together!

First: THANK YOU for the kind words everyone! I still don't have a feel for mixing/mastering, but hopefully I'm getting there.

I enjoy denseness in my tracks, but usually it's just ALL THE NOTES ALL THE TIME. If I can achieve the same fullness with less cacophony and more variety, I'll have to make an effort in that direction!

This is great to hear - I definitely have a "type" when it comes to synth patches & sounds, so it never feels like I have much variety going on. Now I have to keep in mind what I did here!

I was SO WORRIED about the quiet part. I'm always concerned reducing everything down to only 1 or 2 sounds will ruin the momentum, but for some reason I forget that space is just as important.

Nice!

That dirty thing was created with one of the new wavetables! I was so happy to come up with that sound & I'm stoked it wasn't just me smile

Great. Now I want s'mores. Can't eat just one. Pro tip: Nutella and stroopwafels. YUM

That would be the most delicious way to mute a kick. Over the course of the track it would get less and less muted though because I would be eating them.

Thank you! I need to be more conscious about including a wider variety of sounds. It makes the track more exciting...IF I can come up with patches that complement each other without getting too samey (one of the patches in this track is actually two; they just sound too much alike).
