Deluge only

So tell me: Do I just consistently make my drums too loud?

Getting closer and closer to the type of pluck sound I want
Struggling on and off re: finding the time for WB, and making something that doesn't sound thrown together or half-arsed or box-check-y. For now, I'm gonna keep going!

One of the synths sounded a big like Colbert's eagle cry, so I had ta.

Teaching semester just ended so there's that....

As always, much love to all of you weekly beaters!

I think the drums are pretty in line with the synths.

I love the synths they sound like bubbling balls bouncing off each other.

The acid sound at the end is great. Like something you would find on an early Aphex record.

i'm maybe not the best judge, but the drums feel right to my ears. and this does not feel half-arsed to me! although i was a little sad when it ended after 2 mins  smile
nice groove

Largely, the drums seem ok for the type of thing you are doing. Electronic music tends to be pretty drums forward. I have issues with snare's sometimes as they have a lot of harmonics across the spectrum, if you reduced them by a maybe -3db in some sections they can help make room for some other elements. Little tweeks in velocity helps too in my experience. The other option would be to just tighten the decay on things. psychoacousticly, loudness is also derived a lot from the length of a sound being at near peak volume. Some times you can keep the volume and decay length and just adjust the slope to zero and it'll give the perception of sounding quieter and more dynamic. When mixing drums, I think it really helps to think about the experience over time on a holistic level. Little tweeks like that can make everything jive a bit better. IDK I'm just kind of rambling as I think about it tongue

Song sounds great to me. Reminding me of some Rolando Simmons tracks I like. Especially that top lead. I really like that guys stuff. I like your direction in this one. I've never used deluge but, this makes me interested in trying it.

Really good point re: the psychoacoustics of sustained sounds. The saturation I added to this snare makes it tail pretty long, and that's definitely contributing to it feeling "too loud."

I've done a *lot* of commercially leaning EDM subgenres (production music) in the last several years and probably habitually make the drums hit harder than is appropriate in other genres.

I haven't heard (of) Rolando Simmons but will check him out. I got really into plucks by way of A.G. Cook (by way of Charli XCX). This track doesn't sound much like him overall, but the initial pluck sound and the snare pattern are inspired by him.

Rolando Simmons is fantastic! I'd recommend his Animatronics release and Human Remains. I also liked his old project, Tracker Matte.

I really respect A.G. Cook's production skills. It's always so tight. I should get more into his and the pc music stuff more broadly. I went through a Sophie phase for a bit but, skipped cook for some reason.

Sigh... SOPHIE. Made me so mad that Native Instruments released HYPR and didn't call it SOPHIE. Love her.
