Terrafreeze Shoreline

Week 2, how we doing? This week felt smoother to me than week 1. Shook off the cobwebs last week.

I sat down and started this song based on a tune in my head. It may have been someone else's tune, or maybe the universe dropped it in there. I appreciate it when this happens. Had a general style direction in mind based on some music I had been listening to this week. As things usually go, parts of that tune and style stayed, but after jamming for a while, then editing, this went where it wanted.

Started with bass parts and tried out a Native Instruments Kontakt bass guitar instrument I hadn't used before. I like the sounds of good old electric bass guitars a lot. Maybe from so many years of playing drums along with bass guitarists. Then played some drums along with that. Then a long session on a Hydrasynth I borrowed from License, but only kept some pad layers. Then other bits and pieces, playing around having fun. Guitar also a Native Instruments Kontakt instrument, I think I just dropped some midi I played for synth or bass part onto the guitar track and it worked out well after making notes longer. Sounds like a guitarist playing a real guitar for the most part. It amazes me how these sampled instruments can be so good. They record so many samples, that with a good midi controller (I'm using a Push 3), they can sound pretty authentic. Maybe not a true substitute for someone playing a real bass or guitar, but a fun stand-in who's easy to get along with, and a great way for non-players to enjoy the sounds. We're in a golden age of music production for sure.

Title - it's below zero (Fahrenheit) where I am in the Pacific Northwest this week. Hunkering down, mostly, but I did look at the river today, which was flowing below a layer of mist. Ducks and geese non-plussed, attending to instinctual business. Ice has built up on the jutting rocks and along shoreline. Watch out.

It's been a cold one out there for sure.  This has an awesome sense of motion to it.  I'm kind of picturing flying rapidly over a frozen landscape and taking in the winter wonderland from an aerial view.

The guitars really add to the mix and adds an organic quality to the sampled bass.  Lots of fun sounds going on.

Damn I thought this was a real guitar until I read the comments. These sample libraries are getting insane. Great sounds, neat vibe.

That guitar sound is really great! I did not notice it was a Kontakt instrument, I thought it was a one you recorded live. The whole track really sounds very good. The highlight of the track was the robotic blips in the break around 1:55, as if some alien interrupted a chill jam session, then closed door and went somewhere else.
Watch out for the ice, crazy weather, and polar bears!

nice composition, enjoyed listening

This can not be true. The guitars are fake????? Where are we going? Are all my heroes playing pushes? Why am I tuning my babys every day? You should have told me earlier. Great stuff anywhere.

wow these plugins sound great!
I love how it goes from space cowboy to coldwave

Let's warm up around a fire and this cozy song.

Yeah, loved the warm noisy hiss at the ends of this song. The ending was very tightly executed and the way the rhythms caught-on-to & leapt-off-of each other in the first part stood out. Great work!

The guitar is surely the surprise standout here, but the drums keep me coming back

Heard this one driving home from work, instantly got my attention, was feeling the vibes keeping warm in the car with our -40 temps, grabbed the phone to see who it was and was surprised it was miraclemiles.  I thought no vocoder, no sounds mangled and distorted making me wonder "how did he make that?"  This shows your talent, keep things fresh and original (though I love your fun/vocoder/crazy sounds), really enjoyed this, awesome use of Kontakt instruments, really never would have guessed it was not played live.

Agree about how nice the guitar sounds! Nice wintry misty vibe, you nailed the mood of the non-plussed birds in the cold. I love when I get a tune gets dropped in my head too. I was trying to hear the Hydra bits and I think I could pick out bits at 1:16 and at 1:45 - cool sounds smile

a lovely, reverie-like psychedelia in the guitar sounds and their dreamy gestures!

For sure, sampled instruments are getting so good, probably can't tell what's what in many cases these days. Awesome that you can actually play guitar well though! Thanks for listening!

Yep, that alien was just popping in to say hello. Haha, good one! Yeah I'm happy about that guitar, I'll play with that again. Thanks for the comment and listen!

Haha, I know right? What a wild world of sound in 2024. Tuning and playing the babies every day is still a wonderful and irreplaceable magic though!

Yeah, I'm digging what I'm getting from these NI Kontakt libraries so far, they put some time into their sampled instruments for sure. I love that "space cowboy to coldwave." I didn't know what to call it other than maybe post rock, but those styles are more fun.

Hey thanks for the comment, awesome observations, glad you noticed that rhythmic interplay, appreciate that.

Awesome, that's great to hear, thanks for listening! I'm partial to the drums too, since that's the main instrument I can  actually play.

Hey Jason, thanks for this awesome comment, I appreciate it! Wow you have us beat with -40, hope you stayed warm enough! Glad you liked my changing things up a bit. I was just writing in the week 3 description that I was trying to get comfortable and accept trying some new things and having some fun!

Hey right on thanks for commenting. I do like our local cabal of non-plussed birds, especially the South Hill Turkey Gang. Those are the Hydra bits, and the intro and outros. The alien interrupting the jam session as Kedbreak said. Thanks for loan on that.
