Sustain Gains

By miraclemiles on October 20, 2024 11:08 pm

Here's the result of something I've been wanting to do for a while: feature my son on the sax-o-ma-phone! He likes the hip hop and the jazz, so with that general direction in mind, I laid down some foundations on the Push: bass, chords and finger drums. I finally managed to get him in the room Saturday night after dinner, he was a little reluctant but he took the leap. Hearing my foundation he immediately had feedback, which was great: moving chords around, changing the key (loving the new Ableton Midi tools that made this easier). Then I sat down on drums and we jammed together with the backing tracks. He got more and more confident as we went and when we were done he said, "I'd do that again." Proud papa here.
He's on tenor sax, and he just switched to that this summer from alto to get into the top jazz band at the high school (they only needed a tenor and the teacher thought he could swing it). Can't wait to see how he evolves. He's also starting to make beats in Ableton with friends. I hope experiences like this make a lasting impression and he does stick with music beyond school, but who knows. His path is still unfolding and that's wonderful. We see the gains every day we want to sustain!

WOW. This is hiiiiiip! The sax was super tastefully done/ What a jam, super groovy and perfectly executed. Those keys were also very tastefully executed. What a blast! Favoriting this one, it's one of the best tracks i've heard this year.

Oh yeah, you can be proud on this track. It is so jazzy and cool. Your son is brilliant. I wish I could play like him. But I am using my alto only once a week for 2 month now. Have to practice more. Wish to see more of both of you. Thanks so far.

Cool collab with your son!  He's definitely got nothing to be shy about as the sax sounds fantastic and really adds a lot to this.  Glad to hear he ended up having fun with it.  It's groovy, jazzy, and chill all at once.

gaaaaah i love this so much!
your son has great feel and tone, hope to hear more from you 2!!

i like when you were dancing around the tree haha  big_smile

Thanks so much, happy to hear this. Yes proud of this one. Fun to so some jazzy vibes. Glad you liked my son't playing, I will tell him that, he'll be happy. It takes so long and so much work to learn an instrument. Very cool you are learning sax, I have enjoyed hearing it on your recent tracks, looking forward to more!

Hey! So happy you liked, thanks jwh! I will share that feedback with my son too. I think you'll hear more from us! Fergus the feline says hello. He's funny because when he's outside he always runs away, in high alert mode, but inside he's all love and cuddles. And that maple tree was so beautiful right now, had to get it in there, and by today those leaves have mostly fallen.

wow this is such a cool collab.  The intro gave me some beastie boys-esque jam feels and then the sax line gave it that extra funk ala Griz.  Sweet rhodes line that comes in and meshes so nicely with the sax.  Hail yais def look forward to hearing more funky jams like this.

This is so awesome, glad you could have this experience with your son and hopefully will lead to more collaborations. I like how your son thinks "Hip Hop and jazz".  So rewarding to enjoy an activity with the kids that we are both into, took my 8 year old mountain biking a few weeks ago and he loved it, some falls but no tears.

Thank you! Beastie Boys instrumentals always an influence to me. Glad you feel the funk - a happy place for me for sure. More funky jams on the horizon!

Thank you! Yes I feel so lucky we could do this. Yeah, he's really into hip hop and plays jazz in high school, but don't think he listens to much jazz outside of school, but likes a jazzy hip hop beat. It's great when kids share an interest for sure. Nice you went MTB with you son, start them early!

Awesome you got to make this with your son! My son is three, he mostly likes dancing to music at this point but could be nice to collaborate, he is singing sometimes, the latest song was about ducks, I had to add quack sounds in a chorus big_smile

I enjoyed this funky track, has a very nice feel_goood vibe to it

Haha, that is so cute. Quacking on a duck song. Sounds fun. I miss those those days when my kids where younger, singing silly songs, something to be cherished! Always nice to share music together. And little kids dancing is the cutest! Thanks for listening!
