reading stories, telling stories

By miraclemiles on November 17, 2024 11:42 pm

I read, watch and listen to a lot of stories, and occasionally I tell some. But this week I was thinking about how I miss reading stories out loud to my kids. Stories form our realities. It's nice when stories make our lives better and help us make sense of things. I think I read something somewhere (maybe the book Sapiens) about how it is our species (sapiens) ability to agree on shared stories (myths) that set us apart from the other human species and helped us become what we are today (the only human species remaining).
Maybe some of the chaos and confusion we have today is that there are so many many more stories accessible to us than ever before. It's hard for us to agree on anything. But we still like our stories.

So. Maybe an ironic title for a song with no words, but instrumental music enables us to create our own stories, and that makes for a good moment or two.

The working project title for this was "Odd Groove", which is more on the nose. There are some "odd" grooves in here. I started out by playing the e-drum kit along with tracks from DJ Lycox album and recording that as midi. Used the midi notes to make some drum and percussion parts. Played some bass and keys on the Push. Used some new sounds: Kontakt Lo-Fi Glow instrument and some Puremagnetik synths which was fun. So many sounds at our disposal these days, it can be overwhelming, but inspiring. A diverse palate for our audio storytelling.

Good background for this track. I think our fascination with stories is linked with how they deeply resonate with our subconscious, our archetypes, and speak directly to the psyche. We need more stories to help the large amorphous ocean of our subconscious to take shape and help us travel the land.

With that background, I love this track as it has the tribal percussive element that may be a reminded of more ancient times where the music was a way for our ancestors to open the doors of perception and move across different worlds. Thank you for sharing this one!

I know exactly what you mean with instrumental storytelling. Also, there is a good functional dance factor in this song activated.
I like the samples and the odd grooves you have picked up. Well done. I have missed your sons sax.

I really like those vinyl pops and the percussive elements were very cool.

Fun listen.

I am a big fan of stories, but I think you're onto something here.  A lot of conflict throughout human history has come when people can't agree on their stories.  And today we have access to so many stories.  I think it can feel overwhelming and makes a lot of people cling to their stories.  And anything that disagrees or threatens the reality of their stories causes anger and fear.  I think the world is in need of a better story.

But anyway the track itself definitely tells a story, which I think a lot of music does with or without words.  The grooves may be odd, but they are quite tasty, and there are some choice sounds and textures to dig through.

I feel like each motif here could be expanded into a longer set - theres so much dynamics and variation, and the way each story transitions into the next is magically musical - theres all these little passages and stories in between. Wonderful piece!

so many cool and inviting elements mak8ng up this deep story.
for example: the rim hits (?) that come in @ 1:45. like those just took me into a new room where I was given the next important secret.

may you continue to tell stories for many years heart

The irregular rhythm really keeps it going, and I really like the chimes. The comeback around 3:00 after a slowdown is really nice too!

Reading and stories are so important, I do miss reading to the kids, they are older now, but everynight before bedtime we all read our own books together usually on the couch or our bed for about 30 minutes.  It is a quiet time and time to wind down, I think it does help to reset the mind and provides better sleep.  Loving this track, the opening bells/chimes and then that deep bass, I also love using Lo-Fi Glow, some fantastic sounds in their always with that little texture layered on top.  Those dubby synth stabs with the bass definitely get the head nodding.

Love the background story for this as it relates to the track itself telling it's own stories with all the intricate grooves.  Those snares that are panned out wide sound awesome in the groove too.  Well done!

love those bells and the off beat rhythm that all works together. So many cool elements. This feels like a bunch of plot lines playing out in a single story. Favoriting!

Great thoughts, I appreciate your deep insights as usual! You're onto some truths here and I agree. This is a topic to delve into more. I hope we can find some avenues in our modern times to engage with music and open those doors of perception again. Off we go!

Ah yes, its always good when music can conjure a story. Your music does that very well and I appreciate it. Glad you felt the dance factor coming through, I wanted the movement. Thanks for listening!

Yes! We have access now where every wild fantastical story can have an audience. And we're struggling on so many levels, it's easy to glom onto one of those crazy stories - with others - and end up in a kind of alternate reality. Very interesting times indeed. Where are the shared healthy overstories that will bring us together not separate us. Thanks for your thoughtful response and for listening. Glad you found a tale in the track and the grooves held together.

Thank you! "Magically musical" is wonderful, appreciate your thoughts. Yeah I think a lot of weekly beat "first draft" songs are ways to find little mofifs we want to spin off into something else. Going and doing that is the challenge.

Thanks so much! I love that image of rooms and secrets. Maybe a good song song takes you into new rooms with new secrets along the way. And may you continue to craft your wonderful stories for years to come as well! I predict we will.

Thank you for listening! Glad you liked the rhythms, I was experimenting a little.

Yes! I have similar memories. Nice that you did as well. Such good times, precious. I love some bell chime sounds, need to dig into LoFi glow some more for sure. Thanks for checking it out!

Thank you! I love the idea of grooves telling stories, not just the typical melody and harmony parts carrying, it's all important in the grand story! Funny, I didn't purposefully pan snares, cool that it happened and sounded good though!
