Humanist Paddling

By miraclemiles on July 17, 2022 8:44 pm

This week I took a few notes on ideas I may want to explore when creating a song. A had a time box of 3 or so hours to create something. Sat down to create and this came out. Did not really follow the ideas. More fun to see what comes out than have rules, but ideas and prompts can be helpful. I've been padding around in kayaks on rivers and lakes this summer, with more to come. Also was recently reading about humanism, so that's the title. I feel like I could expound on that more, but nice to leave something to the collective imagination.

So with paddling on the mind, I was excited to find these field recording from Sugai Ken, which included one of a river, which I used here. Great interview with him on his process and sample downloads here: https://www.ableton.com/en/blog/sugai-ken-the-shibui-of-field-recording-and-electronics/

Drums a samples of a Pan drum, played on an old Roland Handsonic. Handpan is from samples as well. I played in some midi notes, used dual arepeggiators and randomness to add more. The beginning atmospheric sound is from recordings of a classical guitar, put together in great Ableton instrument racks by Brian Funk: https://brianfunk.com/blog/2016/10/7/classical-guitar-ableton-live-pack

Maybe I'll upload a pic or video to go along with this soon, but off to go paddle some more now, maybe record some sounds of my own if I can keep the gear dry smile

The way those higher percussive elements sparkle, all twinkling above that low bass that makes it feel like there's a foundation of slower moving waves underneath it all... such a great establishment of movement here heart

I really enjoyed the percussions and the quiet and soothing vibe in here. nice trip.

Super chill percussive sounds. Great way to slide into my Monday smile I feel like I need a Mojito now.

this is a perfect track for floating down the river.  love the pan drum.

I remember reading that Brian Eno made a custom deck of cards full of "oblique suggestions" and he would make music based on what they told him to do.  I always thought that was an intriguing idea, but I usually just get caught up in the flow of creation and don't even think to follow some sort of prompt.  Anyway a nice track.  Feels kind of relaxing.  I think all the paddling for sure influenced the vibe.  Go enjoy getting out on the water!  It sounds fun!

I love the tone of the percussion in this track. The inverted melodies make the whole track surreal. Trippy track, with a taste of summer. I could hear birds, I was wondering if they were from your track (but no, they were from outside my window). Nice relaxed track.

The whole piece really settles in nicely mid way through with that grooving baseline and tones falling together.

The pan drum sounds great.  I've always wanted one of those hand sonics or something similar cuz I'm always annoying others with drumming patterns on tables and chairs.  This was super mellow to float and drift off too.  Nice work of using the arpeggiators too for variation.

Humanism is pretty great, so is this song, lovely lazy drumming
