Fishes (epic version)

By Minnamari on March 8, 2024 11:23 am

This is a song I've had in the works for a while. It is about fishes longing for other fishes..and longing to return to the sea. Now that I sat down to create an electronic version of it, it somehow wanted to transform into an epic piece of 11 minutes, and I let it do so. This length enabled me to explore how to embrace the flowyness and to create a longer progression to the song. I might create a radio edit at some point but wanted to share this here in this epic shape.

Through the making of this song I learned many new processes such as vocal processing and adjusting the volumes of individual tones in the melodies. My goal was to create a smoothly flowing piece that expresses the emotion of the original song with some additional spices added on top. It consists of many different types of synth sounds such as a more traditional electronic piano, strings and some stranger sounds. If you want to share feedback, something I would be interested to know is whether you feel that it retains a flowyness and feels cohesive even with these different sounds or if there is too much going on.

Thanks for listening!

I think it totally works and is cohesive mix wise, etc. I think it could be presented in under four or five minutes, but it's the epic version, so yeah. It moves very slow, but has its own sound and vibe, so it succeeded as a piece of art. Will there be a shorter album version some time?

I love the evolution of the track, it flows very well and the different parts integrate very well, great work in the transitions as well!

I love the ambition of it big_smile

Nice vocal melodies. There are some super nice thoughtful lines here and there. It's easy to get lost in it and I think further listens will reveal new things.

I think the flowyness works but one thing that stands out to me is that new things usually happen on the 1 (when a 4 or 8 bar loop repeats), so that kinda reveals the grid of the song. I think it could be even more flowy if there are layers that happen in between sections and things evolve a bit more organically and less artificial. That can be done in infinite ways tho. Maybe you can think of it how waves don't really have a start and an end, but they kinda intermingle. What would also help is a bit more of a bridge section at some point that really changes things up... but idk that's more of a classic songwriting thing - maybe this piece is more like classical music where things might change constantly.

I really like the little arp that first happens around ~4min, was waiting for it to come again but it didn't really, or at least it was pretty hidden.

PS: It would be cool to hear more versions of this song! Maybe vocal + ukulele...?

I really love that main progression that returns between the vocal lines. Very somber and longing, so a perfect fit thematically. I also appreciate the variety of vocal melodies, particularly the ascending line at 3:49 that ends in a fall with "anymore". Then at the 5:00 minute mark the chosen synth really starts to sound submerged which is also perfect for the song. 7:00 is probably my favorite of the sounds.

I agree with Horatiu's recommendation on introducing different ideas between the sections. And personally, I would also like to hear little melodic ideas between some the verses that outline more color to the chord progression (probably the aforementioned 5 and 7 minute marks). Maybe some vocal coos and harmonizations with the chord progression. There are a ton of different kinds of ideas that can be explored throughout the runtime. I think the length is justified though, it's a slow burn song that explores the mood.

btw your style kind of reminds me of this artist: Leila

wow, that was so moving. what a journey!
i thought it all flowed really naturally, and the mix felt like it had room to breathe - even when you introduced more sounds. i love when the vocal double comes in on select lines, like @ 3:30

what a great line:
"i am nowhere, but we are everywhere"

and yeah, that synth at 7:00 is so expressive.
thanks again.

Thanks! Yes there will be a shorter version once I get to it. I'm thinking max 4 minutes, but maybe even shorter, I'll see

Thank you very much for your constructive and insightful comments. I agree with the potential to play with the rhythms more to make it more organic and am glad to have my own suspicions confirmed that there's something off with having shifts happening on the 1st beat..also am positively surprised you noticed the arp. I was worried it would remove the flowyness if I used it more but now I'm looking forward to experimenting with it a bit more smile

I actually first wrote this song on my ukulele, and that version is quite different. I am planning to publish my songs in different versions, so probably one album of electronic versions and one album that has purely acoustic ukulele versions. smile

Thanks a lot for your very thoughtful and constructive comments. I appreciate you taking the time. It helps me see there's a lot that can help me develop my music further. But yeah..there's always things you can do differently. The question is what you choose among all those things. Well, gives an opportunity to experiment. big_smile

Epic. Not in the way as a great battle (aside from little bits), but still an epic feat.

Simply amazing. Love the deep emotion captured here.

My favorite track this week. I love the incredible reduction to the essence of the song. A perfect epic classic.
