sleepless people (insomnia 2024 edition)

I’m having a lot of fun tying together character themes in different ways to tell a story this year. And, when appropriate, I wouldn’t mind revisiting old material from previous years and seeing what I can do with it. For example: the foundation for this week’s track comes from a 2018 track, from my first year doing WeeklyBeats. I wrote the original on a sleepless night - not unlike the one the necromancer and crew are having now. wink

Happy Week 11 everybody! Looking forward to seeing where all of our journeys take us. heart

And for anyone curious, here's the original "insomnia":
insomnia (2018)

Hope I've made some strides production-wise since then!

It's interesting how vastly it differs from the source material. I told a friend about how you can "borrow" ideas from songs you listen to and, as long as you recontextualize it and transform it, it'll become your own thing and people won't even really recognize where your idea came from. This is like that but you're borrowing from yourself, haha. And thematically it's consistent with the work you've done so far this year. I definitely think your production on your songs has been excellent.

Just beautiful. Immediately hooked and it only got better smile

Very nice, I especially love the last minute or so.

My first WB was only in 2022, but yeah, I'd say I'd gotten better at the craft since.

The tubular bells here create a rather solemn atmosphere. Those people are sleepless because they perform rituals big_smile

ps: just went back to listen to the original version, really cool to hear the evolution

The original track is so nice too. This version has more power to it. Miss some of the folks from 2022.

I like the layers you added to it, tho perhaps unfortunate the organ had to make way
- Ebrit

Oooh hey this is like a sequel to the 2018 version.  Where the original has that lullaby quality to it this one has the sprawling adventure begins (cuz of insomnia) feels.  This has some Chrono Trigger vibes to it as well with the bells taking the melody.  Epic track very much appreciated smile

Great grand aspiring melody for lying awake at night fantasizing to, or to accompany those stories by the fire. I like the bell, chimes sound.

bad news: i have missed a lot of your tracks!
good news: a new LCB album awaits me!

this is awesome

Oh nice track. The instrumentation is interesting - the choir, the bell, and the percussions. It is both familiar and otherworldly. This could be used for a movie!

Thank you! That’s kind of you to say and reassuring to hear. I know part of the challenge of WB is to create new tracks each week, but sometimes I can’t help wanting to play with elements from previous tracks more. I try to split the difference by recontextualizing them and combining them in different ways, to give old ideas new meaning. I’ve got a number of mentors and favorite composers to thank for teaching me how to do that. heart

Me too, but I bet they’re doing well musically and otherwise. And their WeeklyBeats will definitely continue to teach and inspire all kinds of music makers. (That goes for your submissions too!) heart

I’ll admit, there wasn’t a conscious decision to leave the organ behind. I think I just forgot about it since I had other pads in place in the new version already. It’s interesting to hear what elements of older tracks are sticking with people though, and good to know. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks! Very glad to hear it. In a sense, this track takes place toward the beginning of a new adventure for the necromancer and crew, so I’m glad the track hints at that.

Thanks! And no worries, life happens and there’s been so much amazing music coming out every week this year. These tracks will always be here later. smile

Magical sounding.  The vocal choir and bells are dramatic and soothing. Lots of depth in the arrangement.
