Heeling Achilles

Missed last week and I almost missed this week. This one is structurally and harmonically very simple for that reason. No mode mixture, secondary dominants, chromatic mediants or any of that fun stuff I like to play with so much. I tried to simplify my instrumental ideas in the hope it might make space for a top line, which for me is my biggest difficulty. I hope one day I can get past that and my discomfort with my own voice. So the arrangement is kind of built to hold a top line that doesn't exist yet. It's all in my head, I know, but so am I.

On the plus side, I'm quite happy with the main synth sound. Nothing special under the hood, just the ES P synth treated with a bit of saturation of spring reverb and Bricasti reverb. Spring reverb makes everything great. I quite enjoyed getting the drums together, especially turning off grid snapping so I can find where things actually sound good to me. I will definitely continue that practice.

I'm also really enjoying more intimate chamber strings lately. They're harder to get sounding right with samples because the parts are more exposed than a full 16.14.12.10.8 section, opted for a very small 3.3.2.2.0 section, which is closer to the kinds of live sections I've written for. Also, who has enough beta blockers kicking around for 60 string players these days. Again, the parts are very simple, but hopefully effective.

I was going for a walk in the nice spring weather and was listening to your track. I dig the sound landscape you have in this track with the tight drum, the buzzy bass and the 80s synth chords in the back, along with the synth. It's a beautiful mix that is very evocative. It just works very well.

Everything works fine and “effective”. Well done.

Simple is great too (I really only can go that way... lol). Really like that bass line tone.

Nice "dreamy" pianos. Moving drum loop. I like that weird scratchy sample on the right back, just annoying enough wink .

Well done and Happy you could give that track to us.

Simple? Maybe, but the space you give it all is very nice. Also the synth is lovely.
