The Creek of Forgotten Times

By Kedbreak136 on January 6, 2024 2:28 am

Happy new year 2024 everyone and it's good to do a Weekly Beats without Covid in the background!

I wanted to make a bombastic track to celebrate the year of the dragon but... that's not where the track wanted to go. And if there is one rule to still be welcome in the room of inspiration, it's that you treasure what you receive and you do not demand anything. The track wanted to go into something more nostalgic, like half-remembered sepia memories of childhood, meditative dreams, wind in the grass, a river flowing through the land, and this is where we went. Who knows where we'll go next week? Maybe some zombie funk music?

I am looking forward to listening to you guys' tracks!

Beautiful arrangement. That intro was magical. Looking forward to hearing your latest this year! (Definitely curious to hear what that zombie music might sound like!)

Welcome back and a great ditty to start with I see.  Lots of great melodic work and dig that wicked synced synth tone later.

Hey again old friend! Welcome back!

Love the intro! Reminds me of one of my favorite pieces of music, the rogues/tristram themes in Diablo. Beautiful storytelling as always. The cello heart

Ooo! I'm such a sucker for thunder in tracks. And that bubbly arp leading up to and the glassy patches after. Really just so much to dig here.

Allo!

Superbe track! Beaucoup d’éléments , mais ca respire, beaucoup d'espace et d'images.

Welcome back!!!

woah this one goes places.  rustic and cerebral and forlorn all at once!

Bonne Année kedbreak!

Good to see you back!  While I'm definitely looking forward to those dragons eventually making their appearance, this one does just fine without them.  The music box sounds around 2:10 are a cool little break and add to the nostalgic feeling.

ohhh this is just magical sounding! love the trip/glitch hop direction it takes

I'm definitely feeling the nostalgia, particularly at 1:44 which takes me back to an NES zelda dungeon heart. Loving all the movements and genres explored. Looking forward to keeping up with your music throughout the year smile

What is it about dripping sounds with some reverb that is so spine-tingling? This track is quite a fun adventure. Welcome back!

"treasure what you receive and you do not demand anything" - that's so true!  You just gotta roll with the moment in Weekly Beats. because you only have a moment.  I really love where this goes at the half way point with those arps... and then just on a journey :-o

Very cool! heart

Beautiful.

This is beautiful and cinematic, but still really moves. The dominant environmental samples in the bridge really brings the setting/story into focus while the two distinct lonely melodies pull you along and keep you hooked. Masterfully arranged and executed (as always).

But now I want to hear zombie funk music!

I imagine walking through multiple movie sets to this. Each phase being a different scene. The intro being the outro is great.

Definitely nice discovering this song.
- Spider

with the depth of exploratory joy and pathos in this track, this creek is surely NEVER to be forgotten! *raised fist*

Great journey!

Always a fan of your epic journeys your music takes me on.  Really enjoyed the middle section where the theme feels like it's in a cyberpunk/bladerunneresque soundscape smile Excellent work as always, here's to a fun 2024!

Wow, I love the intro and melodies throughout the first half. I thought it was winding down and I was like "how are they going to stretch this out for 2 more minutes?" Then at 2:28 it picked up and started building again! So much melodic atmosphere here. Amazing

Great melodies. Love how this changes direction at around 2:30. That syncopated synth

hah! surprised by the old-school drum beat at :35
ooh, and how it all comes back together in the second half
wow, what a way to start the year!

What a fantastic arrangement!

lovely sound choices and arrangement, really loved the strings, great start to 2024

Great to see you back in 2024, Kedbreak136!

This really stood out in the playlist.  There are so many ideas (all good), and the way they flow together feels like a narrative.  Actually it feels like an entire (old) feature film, condensed into four minutes (and viewed through nostalgia goggles).  That complete stop and cave/thunderstorm SFX in the middle made me want to see how each character was doing during such a crucial standstill.  And the return of the synths felt just as dramatic.

^^  Great call; I'm pretty sure recognizing that is the only way you end up with tracks like this.

Yay, welcome back! Gotta follow where the track wants to go. The journey is mysterious and magical!
This is great, calm and welcoming beginning. I'm transported to the creek. Lovely string melody - carries us down the creek. Then while playing with the friendly fairies riding on toads we go onward to a fun a journey. I like when the string refrain comes back to lay over the moving arp. May fave part may be the middle - playing with the fairies on toads part.
Thanks for reminding its year of dragon, my year. I gotta celebrate and do a bombastic track for it!
Can't wait to hear your tracks in the weeks ahead!

You do bombastic SO well! But this is just beautiful, very engaging composition with lots of interesting movement & some sick arps in there as well. Thanks!!

Hello dear kedbreak 136, this sounds huge, filigree and sentimental at the same time. Very well produced and worth listening more than 10 times. I am so glad we meet again.

Really like that track, especially the arpeggios!

Super good! I love how all the diverse elements work so well together smile

Intro is soooo good, giving me a bit of early Oneohtrix Point Never with koto instead of Juno big_smile I see what you mean about it going where it wanted to go, but the arpeggios it settles into are awesome too.

Thank you for checking out the track! Well, the zombies made into week2 track so you may not have to wait that long! smile

Thank you very much! Great to see you again (too bad hent03 is not doing it for now. sad )! I loved your epic track, always an inspiration in sound sculpting and creating alien soundscapes!

It's great to see you again! Your track kicked me out of my socks! Thank you for the comment about the cello - I have always loved the texture of that instrument.

Right? There is something about thunder that is plugged directly into our reptile brains and transports us to a more primordial time. And for some reason, distant thunder always ends up creating a sense of large space! Thank you for you comment!

Thank you for your nice comment! The dragons will definitely make it later this year! We should have the new lunar year festival at the Chinatown of Yokohama, with dragon dance. I am sure that will trigger a lot of ideas, and hopefully i get to do some foley recordings. Great to see you this year again!

Thank you very much! The trip part was a bit of a bet, using that trip hop drums, but it kinda works, doesn't it? smile

Yep, let's make all tracks a journey through space and memory! Thank you for your comment!

Great to see you back this year, my fav prog musician! I appreciate the reference to the NES Zelda dungeon! Looking forward to also more of your super tasty guitar playing and complex arrangements!

The sense of space it creates! Good to see you again, and I loved your 90s punk rock track, kick the year in high gear!

Thank you very much for the very nice comment! smile Exactly, we have only one moment, and that is what we can catch today. Tomorrow will have another moment that will be just different.

Great to see you again Cailen! Actually this track used to sound even closer to the one we did together in 2022. It even had a section in the middle with the big aggressive sounds that our collab has. But i felt it was too much of a copy so changed it, resulting in the submitted version. For that specific track, this works better. Environmental samples are really good. I am biased though, as i'm the type of person who listens to rainforest foley to work, instead of music.

Week 2 features zombies!

Thank you! Indeed, I wanted to close the loop there with the outro coming back to the beginning.

Great to see you again! I love your piano playing and your tracks always remind me of NIN (my fav band). I could not help going arp and into cyberpunk territory, even though I try to stay in nature, it alwways catches back with me.

Thank you, I appreciate your comment. I actually struggled a bit with the mid section, and trying to find something that would make it interesting while being natural, taking us somewhere else that is not TOO MUCH out of place, but different enough that it is a bit surprising and keeps things interesting.

Yes, a little pinch of trip-hop drums. It's funny how a single element that is kind of in the background can really change the dynamic and atmosphere of a track.

Great to see again in 2024! Thank you for joining on this journey through the track! and yes, the trick is to not intellectually decide where the tracks wants to go but to just flow naturally. Easier said than done, to be honest, as sometimes nothing happens.

Hey Miles! Exactly, there were toads running around this track, and yet the rhum was still gone. Looking forward to what bombastic percussive epic track you'll make to celebrate the year of the Dragon!

intros i didn't expect to resolve into breakbeats part 423: this one

Happy New Year, hope all is well in your part of Japan.  Great start to the year, brilliant work on the mix, so many different layers to uncover and great use of sfx, this is a magical journey.

Cool track with Shamisen(?)

its just awesome. I love the brilliant sharpness of those bells.

Damn, this is cool as hell.  Loving the swarms of plucks, and the arpy bridge.

Again, you are not a musician, you are a sonic filmmaker.  This is the opening credits of your weeklybeats year.  You pull a Keytar out of the stone and go on your adventure to slay the WB Dragon into 52 parts!

WILL HE ACHIEVE HIS GOAL???

What the f***ing heck Ked?! What kind of journey did you just take me on.

*Falls to knees* WHO AM I?!?!

THESE ARE DOPE TRANSITIONS! Your flow is so damned good.

Already so inspired in the first minute!
These transitions are incredible, wait a sec THUNDER oh my god this rules
i am taking notes rn, esp around 2:30 holy shit this makes me so damn happy. The dirty and sometimes almost inharmonic arp is humbling me. So bold and spicy, just fantastic stuff. Damn, was kinda sad it ended so soon!

I feel that arps is cheating as it's easy to make them sound good. Yet that does not prevent me from using ALL OF THEM.

I've had a tab open to this since the day it first dropped. I've finally been out of meetings long enough to listen. This is SOOO good! Halfway through I was really digging it and listened a second time right away. Each part of this is fantastic!

A contemplative track that seems to span across eons, nice!
