A Midsummer Lion Taming Afternoon

By Kedbreak136 on August 6, 2022 8:20 am

There are movies that, when I stumble on them, I need to watch until the very end, no matter how many times I have watched them. The Grand Budapest Hotel is one of them, and I wanted to capture some of its esthetic into a track.

And failed.

And therefore, I went for a short track this week because I'm off on Sunday for some vacation. It sounds nothing like the Grand Budapest Hotel. I am happy about the bass, that has a Ministry feel to it. The synth is clumsily played, but hey one's doing one's best. The lion tamer decided to join the part, along with his feline friends. And the cicadas song is something I recorded in front of my house with my phone. This is the sound of summer in Japan.

I hope to be back next week with something more inspired.

It may not have been what you were hoping for, but the results here are still pretty cool. smile I love Grand Budapest Hotel too, so I'm excited to see your take on that kind of quirky energy if you pick it back up!

Bass line sounds fantastic man. The main melody has a great groove to it, as well. Love that shamisen sound; has a banjo feel to it that is really cool.

Love that bass, really drives this thing along.  Solid jam, enjoyed it.

Shamisen you say? Never heard of it. Go-go-gadget wikipedia. I dig that sound. Cool track!

It's a great time of the day for lion taming. Don't know about ministry, unless it's the ministry of dance.

I got a bit of a Depeche Mode feel off the bass as well. The track has a fun vibe and the cameo appearance by the lion is a great touch.

Well if the Grand Budapest Hotel were to have a sequel I could easily see this being used in a multi-character montage.  The bass is super catchy and what gave me those initial sequel vibes.  Yais i like!

Ahhhhhhh delightful, early 2022 type of Kedbreak magic! Love that lead so much, and the funk + lalalala + banjo breakdown is just serious business. Love it.

um this lion thought he'd be a cicada...
this is super fun!

Love that movie. Trying to capture a vibe from X thing is great place to start creating, when I do that I often end up somewhere else too, so it goes. I like this groove, and tasty little melody to go with. Yes the bass is awesome here. Setting a scene for some film here.

Yep, the bass line works for me and that is a great film.  Such a fun ride.  Dig the banjo vibes in this along with the lion/cicada duets.  Haha.

I definitely want to try to make a track that sounds like it. I need to watch it again a few times and get really into its weird Wes Anderson world. Hopefully, this will work out.

Thank you! The bass approves of that comment. I really enjoy using a shamisen (well not the actual instruments, more like sampless of soundfont), as it has a very dry sound that cuts through the mix, especially against synth for instance. Like a banjo i guess!

The shamisen is awesome! And there are variations, from traditional music to pretty crazy exciting one. I saw a guy who was using an electric shamisen and covering the Beatles. A very cool instrument!

I was thinking of Ministry (Al Jourgensen's band), and especially Paul Barker sound. I think I kinda got very inspired by The Cannibal Song.

Lions and other animals are always welcome. Yes, there may be some Depeche Mode in it too, thanks a lot of that. smile

I think I'll want to reuse that bass maybe in a live band setup, it could be a good base for a good grunge/stoner track. Thank you for your comment!

Thank you for your very nice comment! I suspect the funk will come back in the near future in some tracks. It's all about cycles, like bell bottom jeans.

If we had lions coming out of the earth during the summer, it would be quite a sight. But i would not bring kids to the park.

That movie is really really nice. Movies and images are usually a good way for me to get ideas of tracks. And I agree, that this may be a seed but you have to accept where the river take you. It may not be where you meant to go, but enjoy the ride and make the best of it.

I wonder how many other tracks in the history of mankind have featured a shamisen/banjo, and lion/cicadas. Thank you for the comment!

Oh wow that bass is balls to the wall!! Smashing groove with some exotic elements that would sit well in a Wes Anderson film.  I think Mar Mothersbaugh would approve.  You always bring the fun!  And a lot of whip!

I love that film too. here you present a more Daktari-like soundworld.
