ode to vish

By jwh on January 14, 2024 8:22 pm

ha, so much for keeping it simple!
i've been meaning to record a little tribute song for Vish Khanna who among other things runs the wonderful podcast, "Kreative Kontrol with Vish Khanna."

figured i'd use my weekly beat as a deadline to finally get it together.  big_smile

drum samples by Spencer Tweedy’s Drumprints (used with permission).

wild hyper hype-person is my buddy, Isaac Turner.

ok!

1st round of shout-outs are guests from some of my favorite recent episodes. 2nd round are some of the local spots that Vish regularly spotlights. someday i will get back to Canada and eat some Pizza Trokadero and Grandad's Donuts. i realized too late that i forgot to work Planet Bean Coffee into the lyrics... oops!

lyrics:

vish khanna / where are you today?
vish khanna / that's a really nice thing to say
kreative kontrol / comin' atcha from CA
vish khanna

is it true that all canadians are nice?
is it true that you would never bring a gun to a knife fight?
when i think of you i often think yr chillin'
when you said uncle robert did you mean...
BOB DYLAN??

>shout outs to guests, sponsors, & black women united (an org that vish regularly spotlights)

jeff tweedy / kelly deal & josephine wiggs / robert smigel / steve albini
that's a really nice thing to say

pizza trokadero / grandad's donuts / blackbyrd music / the bookshelf / black women united
those are really nice things to say

VISH!

K.I.S.S.! & complexity is reality heart

*nods head in the background see dude in the back above* Really cool use of the Spencer Tweedy drumprints.  Love the flow of the lyrics and the positive vibes throughout.  I tend to think of other songs sometimes when I hear tracks I like so hopefully this isn't a bad thing but when I first heard it, I got some Flaming Lips "Yoshimi battles the pink robots pt 1" feels smile  Course its different but yais i like! hi-five!

Not only nice things to say, but nice things to hear as well.  The track has a wonderful warm and happy vibe to it.

I've never listened to said podcast, but the chorus seems like a great outro/theme music. Really enjoyed this! All the sounds are spot-on. Super vibin'. Great job!

tweedy/dr. dog vibes here. Love it!

thanks, Tone Matrix! not a bad thing, i love "Yoshimi..." and yeah, was really inspiring to play to S.Tweedy drums (playing bass was especially fun). so much talent in that family!

will take it! emily and i saw Dr. Dog at Schubas in Chicago on an early date before their first album came out (they were opening for M.Ward). was a great show and they instantly hooked me. thank you!

love your voice on this one, playful and nostalgic in the production-sound too (that slight saturation/distortion over your voice is tasty - a killer mic sound)

Completely delightful! Great choice of beat, loving the guitar and vocal lines over them, too. Vish ought to love it!

Love this style!

Oh! Nice reference to The State. I love it even more.

Great song and video. . Both made me smile lots. The video had some really funny bits, the Triumph the insult dog part, "nice thing to ... say" hahahah.
Great vocals and lyrics. I'm happy to learn about Vish from up in CA. I'll show up him som love and hear some nice things for sure. Cool you used Spencer Tweedy samples! The drums have a great jangling feel that makes this stand out.

Awesome lyrics, can't listen to this and not be happy, the drums sound so good with this, and being a Canadian I can tell you sadly they are not all nice.

Never heard of the guy, but you can tell this song is full of love

Nice easy feeling here, definitely get a few Flaming Lips vibes. Keep it up!

thanks, Raja! funny thing (and a good reminder to myself) — that was i think the cheapest mic i own — an AKG P170 that i bought used for @ $70 a few yrs back. i often use it when tracking acoustic guitar and i already had it set up so i went with it  smile
