for Steve heart

with:
Gary Gahan // baritone & tenor saxophone

*photo — Brad and Steve — by Jodi S., used with permission.

>>>i decided to add this one on my jwh bandcamp as a "name your price" download. any funds that come in will be donated to Letters To Santa, an org that Steve cared about deeply (his wife, Heather, is the President). there is more info in the liner notes for the release.
whether you donate or not, feel free to grab a lossless version there if you would like (because of the length of the track i had to use a 160k mp3 for the WB upload).

“I hope when I die I go like John [Grabski], embroiled in the middle of things, surrounded by people I love, doing the things that matter most. I hope I leave a mountain of shit unfinished, that I have a pan on the stove, a phone call waiting and a pencil in my hand. I hope I'm man enough to be thinking about tomorrow.”

heart heart

Incredible! I really like the way that this was mixed with very clear layers; a background, middle and foreground. While listening i found myself shifting back and forth between the different elements, almost like when you’re  shifting your focus when looking at something. Very effective! The long form and slow tempo was just what i needed in the moment. I loved the surprise of the song, was expecting it to be just instrumental, thank you for letting it linger!!

The guitar makes me feel like I'm in this picture frozen in time.  The space in between the melody is extra appreciated.  Love how you used his quote. Aww I don't want to spoil anything but the vocal harmony heart  Damn it. I did not expect that.  The harmony and lyrics got me in the feels *scuse me, tissues*  Music therapy for the soul.  (even gingers)   thank you frainds

Wow, what a pleasure to listen to this, so rewarding.

Meditation meets music. What a beautiful moment to slow down and listen. What are the background elements you added in, so subtle and perfectly placed in the mix. Then the chord change and vocals at 8:40, wowwwwww! Amazing

Sounds great!

on multiple listens i just realized today how the sax was adding to the atmosphere of this.  At first I associated it with an organ because of how it's presence is in the background and kinda flaring about.  Faved n saved!

This is evocative and beautiful. Also, the message/quote in the description is very well captured in this piece (at least in my biased ears, hahahaha...)
Looking forward to hearing more of this. Just so dang pretty...

Feels like staying up super late at night and feeling a sense of magic in the air after the whole world has gone to sleep.  I like the way you take as much time as you need to stretch out and inhabit this sound world.  It exhibits a sense of patience that pays off in spades.

extremely serene and beautiful. Has a great chambermusic feel combined to a pop sensibility...love it!

A lovely journey smile Love how this takes its time and the impact that gives the vocals later on.

love the slower pace and radiant warmth. solid meditative ebbing and flowing heart

That is a beautiful tribute to a beautiful human being. It is pensive. You manage to keep the organic sound of the guitar, its fragility, and let it resonate into infinity. It seems to reach into the dark night. Beautiful homage. I like how your mixed the vocals in the back as well, adding a subtle layer.

Made me take pause, thank you. A great meditative tribute, slowly rolling until the vocals come in, nice. That is a great quote you shared. Albini is legend. I like that he advocated for independent music, avoiding the big labels and stayed true to his ethos. It's frustrating how the big corporations were, and still do, profit more than the creators. It takes multitudes, but we need more like Steve.

great tribute to one of the greats, in a world where what it means to be human is under constant attack, his light had a very large radius and a positive impact on so many.

Thank you for this, listening to the slowly unfolding journey of this song was soothing.

thanks so much, all! specific responses below, i just wanted to mention up top that i updated the song info after the fact:

thank you for the deep listen. i love that you heard it in layers, and that made a lot of sense to me when i thought about how i recorded and mixed it. for example - with the electric guitar i used 2 mics. 1 was close to the amp, and the other was farther away to give it some depth. and then the saxophone parts were mixed in fairly low in the mix, almost as supporting tones. Gary, who added the sax, is such a close listener and is so thoughtful on the parts he adds.
anyway - thank you!

oh thank you, Tone Matrix! and yeah, i worked hard to get the sax sitting in there just right. Gary was very adamant that he didn't feel it should be prominent in the mix... but when i had his parts solo'd they were SO COOL. but yeah, especially in headphones it adds so much.

much appreciated, was very meditative to record so i'm glad that came through for you. i think what you are referring to in the background are the baritone & tenor sax parts. i opened up a message from Gary last Sunday with 18 (!) tracks and was a little worried at first. thankfully he had done most of the necessary editing and had good notes for me with panning intentions etc.   smile

i very much agree. he would have been the first to say he was no saint, but i have a lot of respect for the way he operated - including how he grew as a person. i've see so many great stories this past week. also, wow - that last Shellac album that just came out is incredible.
