a little ditty with some help from the gentle friends:
Michael Harold Doty // harmony vocal(s)
Gary Gahan // tenor saxophone

› lyrics

found the seeds of this one on an old voice memo & decided it was time to bring it into focus. grateful to a couple good buddies for walking through the woods with me.

ps: hope this isn't too spammy, but wanted to share a link if anyone feels like checking it out. my bandmate in forestlike & i were on an episode of the Kreative Kontrol with Vish Khanna podcast that came out this week. if you heard my week 2 song, 'ode to vish,' you can probably guess at how stoked i was that he had us on. the song does come up, and we also talk briefly about Weekly Beats.  smile

ok! 2nd quarter! onward!

Hey alright! I love this one. Great team effort. I was surprised at how much I liked the sax. It's an interesting addition. Gentle is the right word.

A perfect indie folk song. I love everything about this. It is so good.

Oof, that saxophone is exactly what this needed. Very nicely glued with the rest of the mix. The double vocals are beautiful.

I don't quite understand the lyrics but I'll keep trying. Intriguing writing!

Another comfy and cozy little tune to snuggle up with.  The double vocals sound great as does the sax.  I know all about those voice memo sketches that are just waiting to be developed.  I need to dig into some more of those myself.

Super nice song! I also don’t really understand the lyrics but it feels like there’s sense in the somewhere, which is very cool. Love the pictures… “strangers barking at moonlight”. Very cool writing!

Man this is a killer song! The tenor sax is such a nice touch, and the vocals sound SOOOOOOO perfect.  Oh, and I really like the highpassed intro, it setups up the track very nicely. Instant Favorite.

thank you so much! and yeah, my initial thought was to keep this one even more minimal or country it up a little... but something told me to see if Gary was hearing anything on it and i'm so glad i did. we've collaborated on a few things this past year and he is such an intuitive & thoughtful player.

thank you, rplktr! re: the lyrics, ha - that makes 2 of us.  big_smile
it is more stream-of-consciousness/ impressionistic rather than a linear narrative. i tend to gravitate to lyrics like that where it's more about how they make me feel or how they feel to sing instead of a story to follow.

dang! thank you, Napear! opening the files from Doty & Gary felt like xmas  \( ̄▽ ̄)\

The acoustic guitar sounds excellent - I lack a technical way to describe it but it feels like it's being played in front of me. The tenor, electric, and harmonies create such a delicate arrangement. What a treat smile

Man, I love how mellow this feels. So chill. Exactly up my alley. Thanks so much for this heart

Gentle lovely song. A calm summer day floating in a boat. That sax gave me warm fuzzies. Awesome about the podcast, I'll check that out!

love the collab, great harmony!

Love the pacing of the guitar strums and your vocals.  The sax was a sneaky addition that fits in so nicely.  At first I didn't realize it was the sax cuz it came in so smooooothly.  Really relaxing track smile

I don't even like this style of music and I love this song

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh gosh.  I was scrambling with making dinner and gave this a listen and all the feels hitting me at once, goosebumps, way more emotional than I was ready for. The vocals are lovely, the guitar is so clean and mournful with those little 7ths, and holy crap I wasn't ready for the sax! There moments here that bring me back to the best, heartstring-pullling moments of Cowboy Bebop. Absolutely fantastic.

thank you! i'm stoked to hear that cuz i always like how your acoustic sounds.
it sometimes creates some mixing challenges, but for some songs i find i sing more naturally when i'm recording guitar and vocals at the same time - this was one of them. i had an SM7B up by my noggin, and a little AKG P170 pointing at the 12th fret and fairly close to the acoustic. there's some mic bleed, but that's never really bothered me.

beautiful songwriting, once again. don't need more lines of words when they are all this interesting. did you make bark-boats out of birch as a kid? that was something I did, watching them sailing down the river

Wow, that is so precious. And amazing they planted the tree when you were born. Such a wonderful gift.
