Usurper

Hello there, folks! I'm uploading this one a bit early because I just happened to finish it mid week. First of all, apologies for not commenting on almost any of y'all's songs this past round. Work, life, yadda yadda... You know the drill, you've been through it yourself a couple of times at least, I'm sure.

As a heads up, you'll want to turn the volume down for this one. It opens pretty loud and harsh. My apologies, I didn't notice until it was too late =/

Anyways, this week I ended up making another simple little chiptune marching song. However, I feel like this one has a special bite to it. The image I get with this song is of an evil, ruthless, power hungry character's  inevitable rise to power as they usurp the throne of a vast and mighty empire. When the song is in full swing (around 1:00), I can SEE this character's coronation ceremony, an obviously evil grin appearing on their face as some official swears them in, the full pomp of the empire doing it's ritualistic song and dance and it's impossibly strong military becoming ready to bend to its new ruler's every whim. Meanwhile, the empire's bureaucrats and high court members simply smile and clap, all of them sycophantic ghouls who are more worried about potentially losing their post instead of the negative consequences of this power grab on the well being of the empire and its people.

By the way, I swear I did not mean to make this song as a political statement about the recent USA elections! I know it sounds like I'm joking, but I'm dead serious! Even though the image I explain above sounds like a hyperbolic fantasy-setting caricature of our recent real world events, I never actually intended to do so. I think the more march-y vibes started coming through, and I found a few combinations of sounds that felt particularly militaristic, ruthless and just plain evil. This is when the whole "coronation of an evil, power hungry usurper" image came to me: AFTER I had finished the song!

Anyways, I wasn't really sure how to progress the song beyond that main loop, so I just slowly faded out after a couple of repetitions. I just couldn't bring myself to fiddle with it because I just REALLY liked how it sounded and didn't want to add new sections or change anything.

This song was fully made on the M8 using nothing other than it's WAVSYNTH engine and only five tracks! The M8 tells me I spent about 1h30min making this one.

Also, thank you so much for all of your kind comments on my last submission. Y'all seriously rock my socks.

Super looking forward to listening to what y'all have been up to!!!!

Cheers!!!!

I feel like the drums could stand out a bit more, really drill the march home. Otherwise, give the lead as much reverb. Can't have enough reverb.

Yeah, this is really great! That lead wailing away the whole time is epic. And something about the backing arp sound that comes in around 1 minute takes me right back to C64 cracktro music which I loved as a kid ... uh and still do! And 5 tracks you economical wizard.

i can see it all in my mind's eye. nice work, jeg!

It does seem to mirror some real world events in a strange way.  It is a tiny bit loud and harsh, but it also makes it sound cool and something tells me the usurper doesn't care about your ears one way or another.  smile

Also, funny coincidence, I titled my week 10 track Usurper.  I wonder if there are any other usurper themed tracks out there?  We should put them all together in a compilation album.

Nice one, I liked this a lot.  At 50 seconds I had a smile and at the 1 minute mark rocking out a little at my desk.  I dig the harsh tone and that natural chip distortion.  I could see the images you painted in your mind, in my mind however the characters are getting ready for the assault.  Wishful thinking or too many hours in Final Fantasy, who knows?

Now there's a synth sound!

+1 Devius, wouldn't mind hearing those march drums a bit more in my face!

Damn, this is epic material.

I could hear that with a full orchestra in any epic movie!

100%, I had the same thought! I love the chip tune goodness, but I was really digging what was going on in this piece musically - I could absolutely hear this as an epic orchestral track, could hear which sections would be doing what. Great scene setting in this one - awesome job!

I know you didnt wanna take this beyond the initial loop... which is awesome!.... but man my brain is just begging, drooling, desperate for a massive raucus four-on-the-floor destroyer-kick to smash in and launch the syncopation into ultra-fast bpm head smashing hell. This is great as is, but I think its also a monster waiting to happen!

Immediately when the track started I felt 8 years old again, starting some game from a floppy disk and hearing the menu music big_smile

siiiiick. Very catchy. Really liked this one

This feels like the soundtrack to a Terminator game made for NES haha!

oooh yais soundtrack vibes indeed.  excellent drum groove too!
