The Fox and the Spider

By jegasus on January 25, 2026 9:05 pm

### Lore

The Fox has lost track of how long he's been sprinting. He also hasn't looked back in a while. Is he still being chased? Possibly. He swears he can still hear the terrible Spider's legs as they skitter across the Forest. Is it on the ground? Or jumping from tree to tree, setting up traps he can't see until they ensare him? It doesn't matter - the Fox just needs to keep going. He knows he'll be safe once he finds Her. Just a little longer. Just... a little... longer...

### Production details

Well hello there, fellow music makers!!! I hope you're doing well and that this song finds you well!

I'm submitting this song to Weekly Beats 2026 Week 4 as well as to the M8 Community Jam #48, where the theme was "Forest".

After spending the whole week trying to come up with sketches and ideas, I had reached my Saturday evening feeling quite dispirited. Before going to bed that night, I booted up my M8 and brought up the MACROSYNTH's Plucked instrument (which I feel I've been really gravitating to this year) and just started dropping some random stacked notes using the Internal MIDI trick and found a really pretty sounding progression. I then created a second plucked voice that played against it in a slightly higher pitch than the original and felt I had gotten something special. I then created a WAVSYNTH Pitched Noise voice full of reverb (as I have also been doing a lot recently) to serve as the bass. Feeling accomplished knowing I had a seedling of something cool, I went to sleep.

The very next day (today!), I jumped on the Dirtywave Discord's "Jamming" channel to hammer out what the full song was going to sound like. Special shout out to erikthedude and BarristerPlong who joined in and were giving me a couple of cool ideas! Anyways, I was able to flesh out the entire thing and create a couple of sections I really liked.

There are some parts of the whole thing that sound a little bit crowded to my ears, but I kind of don't care - I just thought that all the different voices going off simultaneously still sounded really fun. Also, mastering isn't really the fun part of making music for me, so I just tend to not really focus on it much at all beyond just bumping volumes up or down slightly when things are obviously drowning or overpowering other voices.

After finishing the song, I noticed that the energy of the track evoked the sense of a mythical tale of a fox being chased by an evil spider throughout an enchanted forest. That's also when I realized my submission would fit for the M8 Community Jam, too! Very lucky, hahahaha... It really was not intentional!

As usual, this was all composed on the Dirtywave M8 Tracker. What you're listening to is a direct render from the device itself.

This turned out so good! It was so cool to watch you craft this into its final iteration! Amazing work!

Holy hot damn sir... this tracks is CRAZY GOOD!!! The composition alone, like all of the voice play together so well, while still being sensible musical statements on their own... but then the tone on that main plucky sound... I mean, I'm 100% downloading that bundle to sample that synth.  Great arrangement, and the mix is pretty good man.  Instant favorite.

Wow, I need to go back to the 'plucked' instrument on macro synth... U got it sounding so nice!!!! Great work M8🩵

Classical guitar meets chiptune, hreat track! The composition has a ton of movement to it

Nice sound choices and it is a good progression.  This also conveys the urgency of the fox running for its life from the spider.  Keep that lore coming.  It's great.

love the opening theme and how it bounces around the thick punchy kick.  excellent solos that get introduced and hand off to the next.  Giving me some old school Orbital "the box" vibes with those fast trills. Excellent work. Fav'ed!

This is excellent-it's like a great live band, jamming out.

Fiancé says that, while nothing will beat the fetus rap, this is stunningly beautiful.

This is SO pretty! Especially digging that soft whirly lead around the ~0:38 mark, it's such a cool element. Awesome work jegasus! big_smile

Great work with the braids pluck synth
REALLY digging the rapid pluck retrigs at 2:01 and 2:19
composition really coming together at that point heart
enjoyed the tempo winddown

beautiful track

This is awesome!
You mentioned it sounding a little too crowded in places, but I love it.
I think it fits the chaos of a fox being chased by an evil spider very well. Also love how it slows down at the end. Haha feels like the fox got caught by the spider, and as it's fangs sink into his body and the venom takes hold, he drifts off peacefully, realizing his fear and anxiety came from running, not the spider itself.

karplus for the win, well done.

This is awesome! Love a fellow music video Weekly Beats creator too c:

That plucked patteren is super cool! Getting a similar vibes to the soundtrack to Enter The Breach (which is an awesome game and OST btw). A cool touch is that you kept the drums to a minimum, really helps to keep the brooding tension alive. Nice one M8!

nice track! also love that you, erik and barrister was live huddling over it in discord.

very cool - I really like the main theme - great in headphones

can't go wrong with the plucked M8 macrosynth instrument.   and very good use of it here.   The delay is luscious and the way the song layers on piece by piece creates a great sense of ascending

Those underlying buzzy growl like sounds really give a dark, almost uneasy vibe to the whole thing. Really brings out the ambience, really cool M8 stuff here dude.

ah i must have missed this one last week. truly enchanted, my Friend!

I'm sure the spider just wants to give a hug, it can be pretty dangerous out there
