Loving You Was Holy

By Jackmsimpson on April 18, 2026 9:34 pm

Another week of finishing off beginnings from previous weeks and writing sessions.

I quite like this one, trying out some new vocal harmony approaches, and making vocals more of a focus than guitar work. Guitar is tuned to EGDGBe - basically standard but with the A string down a step - no reason, just thought it could break me out of a rut and it worked!

think I might've been a bit heavy on the reverb in some places, but hey - it's all in the sense of fun and experimentation.

Thanks again for listening and for any comments! Have a great week!

Lyrics:

looking at me now
would you believe yourself
if the guy stood in front you
was screaming out  for help

its coming from those places
were we dare not think to look
if we admit defeat here
the what’s ours has been took

if loving you was holy
then loosing you was hell
thinking all the reasons
for the hand that we were dealt
if after all these years
you can’t look at me straight
iI guess I dodged a bullet
of a self I’d live to hate

I’m still  ringing from this summer
from the heatwave and the fights
we kept playing all this sad songs
like it would ever make things right
my friends say I look different
like someone who just survived
they just see empty spaces
that used to be my better side

if loving you was holy
then loosing you was hell
thinking all the reasons
for the hand that we were dealt
if after all these years
you can’t look at me straight
iI guess I dodged a bullet
of a self I’d live to hate

bridge
If i could turn the clocks back
I wouldn’t fix a single thing
Id just hold you in the door way
til the dawn began to sing
but we’re just ghosts inside a memory
haunting rooms we don’t belong
i’ll keep humming through the heartache
until we’ve written our last song

if loving you was holy
then loosing you was hell
thinking all the reasons
for the hand that we were dealt
if after all these years
you can’t look at me straight
iI guess I dodged a bullet
of a self I’d live to hate

More jangle rock gold, love your songwriting. That chorus is an amazing lyric hook, great arrangement and mix. Another favorite.

Let me know when you release the album heart

Thanks for the kind words!

great chorus, dig those harmonies!

I don't know how you manage to produce such fully-realised tracks every week. This is beautiful; especially the vocal change during the bridge. I love how your songs are slower or midtempo, but still rock. I'm not a slow song person, but you've got so much energy baked into your tracks it's easy to get hooked.
