Time Machine

Having a go at a 90's style rock track using Synthesizer V Hxvoc
Solaria on backing vocals.

Drums via EZDrummer, guitars and bass from Neural DSP Nolly, and Parallax
Lead synth via Synapse Obsession

Tried to go with a 90's industrial vibe for the video.

The solo is literally the first thing I played which is why it's a big ragged. I figured it gave a kind of Pearl Jam vibe.

The concept is a failing relationship where he fixates on being able to wind back and redo interactions that went wrong before realising that until they change the approach they will always be doomed to repeat the same mistakes.

Lyrics
On a day like this the stars refuse to shine
Standing at your door running out of time

What have I done
Where did you go
I can't believe it
All that I do  Just makes it worse
Why can't I leave it

I'll make belive
I'll build a time machine
Too cynical to tell you
How I feel

Turn back the clock
We start it all again
But it never stops
Why can't we change

What have I done
Where did you go
I can't believe it
All that I do  Just makes it worse
Why can't I leave it

I'll make belive
I'll build a time machine
Too cynical to tell you
How I feel

We can't change the road we're on unless we realise
We are just the same

This great. I feel like I stumbled on something on the radio.

Good old dad rock song, great big_smile

This is probably America-brained of me, but this feels like a hybrid of 80s and 90s rock. Which is appropriate for a song about turning back time and regret. Drums sound great, especially the heartbeat kick. Really like the flanger on the bridge vocals (weird pull, but Hxvoc kinda sounds like the singer of prog band Arena to me). The Cars-style synth riff is fun, and what would a Nick Long song be without some modal mixture? The guitar solo is my favorite bit, bluesy licks with 90s low-end

Wow that's a super astute comment.

It actually started off as something that sounded like Journey (hence the electric piano and Oberheim) and was kind of a follow on from last week. However it really didn't suit Solaria and when I changed it to Hxvoc the key was all wrong so I had to drop it.

Having done that the rock vocals made it weird to be without guitar so I tracked some live bass into it. Having gone drop D and with the more rock vocals it instantly sounded Seattle so I went for that vibe with the guitars and made the drum sound kind of 90's as well especially the solo which is kind of channelling Pearl Jam.

So I agree it's a weird hybrid, but I think that's OK.

You have good ears!

Definitely agree with sleep side here, there's a bit of a weird hybrid thing going on but I don't mind it at all - the guitar and synths sound fantastic, and the drums are good, though I sorta want everything a little more filthy (especially considering your music video visualization).

(apologies, I seem to be a nitpick shit today lol)

Like Hxvoc is just a wee bit too clean-shaven and doe-eyed. Like a boyband that's trying to be "edgy" with some shiny new pleather jackets they got off Shein. I really appreciate what Synthesizer V can do and it's amazing but like - is there a spit slider? a "I smoked too many cigarettes and spent the night downing whiskey shots and there's gross shit in my throat" button? a checkbox for "I've seen some shit, man. I'VE SEEN SOME DARK SHIT MAN."

I joke because I love I promise lol. This is amazing work and a great song and arrangement. It's really tricky balancing the acoustic aesthetics of all these elements and they are coming together beautifully.

Love the feedback, very much appreciated.

I'm still getting to grips with EZ drummer. It bakes in the processing and everything sounds very "Nice". I'm not sure if I can turn off the processing and do my own filth or maybe I need to get one of the more "rock" expansions.

Hxvoc definitely has some options, but they tend to make him go either very clean or all out death metal screaming. (Which might be fun for another day).

It's all new stuff for me so I'm working through it. I've not really done more traditional band stuff for a while and when I did it was dudes playing to tape rather than all this MIDI nonsense.

This has unique 90s sound, yes. But it's filled out way more than I expected! I'm honestly impressed with the song structure of everything.

Lyrics are great, everything is cohesive, and it swings through nicely on the bridge.

Great guitar sound!

It's Neural Archetype Nolly.

Currently on sale.

Until I heard your track last week I didn't know such vocal synth's existed, very impressive, however you still have to make the lyrics and you have a great way of putting down these catchy story filled lyrics.  Great arrangement with the drums and guitar.

This feels like a theme song to a late 80s/early 90s action show. Love it! Nice guitar playing as well. The solo fits perfectly cool

This is so cool! I read the first comment ("I feel like I stumbled on something on the radio.") before the track started playing and this is so accurate! It's this kind of track that would be played some time at 2.30am and it has just the perfect vibe for that - a bit melancholic and this kind of "night drive" feel to it

Thank you!

Glad you appreciated the lyrics. I wasn't sure about them.

Synth V is very impressive. It's been great for someone like me who isn't a good singer.

Nice, that's kind of the vibe I was going for, like some old song you never heard from AM radio.

Not my style at all but I really enjoyed the track. It sounds pretty damn solid production wise. Great job!
