Another Year

By Jackmsimpson on March 8, 2026 9:44 pm

wrote the lyrics and chords to this song on the evening 30th Birthday when in a reflective mood. Worked on the arrangement this week, adding the little layers and other instrumentation. Musically, and lyrically, I am really happy with this...the actual recording, not so much.

This took two attempts to get to a point where I am happy with the overall feel and recording, though I feel i play it 'live' differently to how it is recorded, as the rhythm of the guitar part feels more 'loose' when its just me and a guitar. Anyways, this will do as a 'proof of concept'. I may come back to it another time if I could record it in a more live-room-with-a-real-m setting, rather than spare-room-of-the-house!

Thanks for all of the feedback - any and all welcome in the comments! Have a great week!

I was told a few weeks ago to add the lyrics to the info, and have forgotten until now... so here are the lyrics!

Lyrics:
Looking over my shoulder
Another year older
Another moment in time
Another day across the line

Shifting focus to tomorrow
Looking for time to borrow
Keep things moving along
I'm holding on holding on

And it feels like I’m arriving
But I don’t know where I’ve been
All these markers by the roadside
Don’t explain the state I’m in

Count the candles on the table
They flicker, unstable
The light fills the room
We sing an old familiar tune

There’s a silence in the distance
I keep moving just to see it
And the echoes line the walls
But I’m still waiting for the call

And it feels like I’m arriving
But I don’t know where I’ve been
All these markers by the roadside
Don’t explain the state I’m in

So I’ll draw another circle
Wide enough to fit the years
Catch the weight that I’ve been carrying
Turn it slowly into clear
If the past is just a shadow
And the future’s undefined
Then I’ll stand here for a moment
With the present on my mind.

Yeah, I’m trying not to measure
Every mile I’ve left behind
Just to find a little meaning
In the here and in the time

The production and guitar playing sound great to me, the chord progression is great too, really leads your voice through the parts.
The bridge also has some unexpected swing to it to, lovely

one of my favorites this year, think lyrically this is especially nice; especially for weeklybeats, damn heart it sounds so great 🌷

Love this, you do jangle so well. Great lyrics too..”all these markers by the roadside don’t explain the state I’m in”. And that guitar solo comes in to roughen things up a bit, great tone. I was also waiting for those drums to come in and lift the energy…awesome.

I heard one thing which might explain why playing by yourself feels looser - your strum pattern has a swing to the rhythm, but your drums (and particularly the kick) don’t. It’s particularly noticeable when the kick plays a couple eighth notes, there’s no bounce. That might help! smile

This sounds great! Intimate but upbeat, and those lyrics are absolute poetry. They resonate something fierce. Your voice sounds like an untamed Paul Simon (this is a compliment).

Happy belated birthday. Great vibes at your party.
