Put A Lid On It

By Ipaghost on March 9, 2014 11:52 pm

I've noticed that my pot and pan lids have a nice resonance to them, so I decided to sample them with a few other kitchen items. Bowing glass worked better than I thought it would. All the samples are just pitched with a touch of room convolution using an impulse of my apartment, and typical mastering.

I actually made a couple impulses in my bathroom too. Since I prefer the sine sweep method, it meant setting up a monitor in the bathtub which was kind of a PIA. I'm thinking of getting a starter pistol, which is also good for protecting your audio gear when traveling!

Oh beautiful! Such delicate and expressive sounds - music is all around us, isn't it? Great stuff smile. Develops so sweetly too

Beautiful! Will have to play it again on proper speakers smile Sweeet

great. thanks!

Awesome - I am expecting to at least devote one week to percussive experiments with household items!

Do it! Although I found I had to add a few non percussive sounds to keep it from getting too clunky.

and again, just brilliant!
and nice gif:)

Really original piece with a beautiful catchy melody... Tried something similar a while back but almost all my kitchen stuff goes with a sad muffled "bonk" smile

Very inspiring. I think it's time to go field recording

oh wow! Nice idea (and really nice use of them sounds). Great composition. I love it!

Lovely tune!

This just made my morning. On repeat at work.

so wonderful! Besides the great recording the composition and arrangement is stunning, too! Love it!

Impressive! A great idea and a wonderful track!

damn. this is sampling done right!

So, so, so goood! I just love this! Excellent GIF, too!

suhweet!!! I've been meaning to record this awesome cardboard box that I keep drumming on when I take the garbage out smile  But this is awesome!  I love the variety of the sounds and can picture a lil music video of pots and pans dancing smile  Great job!

This is awesome, great sound ideas.

Faved & downloaded.

oh my friend you have caught my heart, that opening sweep keeps playing in my head. I would like to steal some samples from you at some point. I dont have mics big_smile

Brilliant piece, very nice recordings too.

Wow.  This is amazing.  I think this may be my favorite of all the WBs I've listened to.  I'm working on a paper with tunes in the background and this one immediately jumped out at me so I had to check it out.  When I read the description it made an already wonderful piece even better.  I'm really impressed (and more than a bit jealous of your skills!).  Thank you for putting this one up!

yo you know how to make impulses!!!! really would like you to educate me sometime on how to do that. This entire thing sounds super natural and very organic - awesome freaking work for sure

It's way easier than you think. There are two methods, a short white noise burst or a sine sweep. The white noise is easiest but the sine sweep is more accurate. Simply record a burst of white noise in your space. I use fl convolver which can record and create a burst, but if you already have monitors in that space, you should just do the sine sweep. I use Voxengo Deconvolver; the free demo works fine. Voxengo creates a sine sweep at a length you choose which you then play back and record, then use Voxengo to process back into an impulse. Of course use best recording practices because convolvers will color your input exactly as if it was going through the speaker and into that mic. Which can also be taken advantage of! Want to recreate a vintage mic, cabinet, hardware processor, cellphone, whatever changes sound non-temporally? Create an impulse! Really want to make something weird? Process an impulse and just destroy it. It's really addictive you should try it.

Kind of an IPA

Awesome stuff.  I love the amount of tones which are available almost anywhere.  Well done!

This is just fantastic. Everything you do just sounds so creative and polished. I aspire to reach your level someday!

Great sound design as always!

One of my fav tracks on weeklybeats up until now. Extremely good work!
