Yellow Lights

By ineff on January 25, 2026 9:24 pm

This track started as a proving grounds for two M8-related side-projects before getting a little out of hand: 1.) a curated library of useful public domain/CC0 samples (optimized for M8), and 2.) a library of M8 FM instruments.

The public domain/CC0 library is definitely the driver this week; among other things, it uses orchestra hits from musopen, 100-year-old blues records from the Library of Congress, innumerable short and feature films from archive.org, and a wide variety of CC0 audio from the inimitable Freesound.

› musopen.org samples used

› Library of Congress samples used

› freesound.org samples used

› Public Domain samples used (archive.org)

100% made and mixed on a Dirtywave M8 Tracker.  All samples used are in the Public Domain/CC0.

A nostalgic journey! I had to do a rewind to make sure my ears weren't deceiving me on the tempo nudge. Great job sourcing the samples and arranging them into a story with your composition.

I love this - dark but playful, lots of cool stuff going on, GREAT samples and I love how you use them rhythmically throughout the track. Big fun!

This is nothing short of insane. Very impressive stuff.

Oh man, that's tooooooooo catchy... I'm gonna be walkin' around all week like "Yellow lights are flashing"... definitely has a 90's OG mixtape vibe though, super dope.

Dude... Just... How??? Hahahah... This is so wobbly but still also immensely solid! SO cool, such a unique atmosphere. The little synth at around 1:00 is particularly pretty! So friggin fun, damn...

1:30 - sometimes, back in middle school, they would pass out keyboards in music class, and the entire class would switch immediatly to the SFX preset, with some vocal/shout samples and all konds of miscellaneous noises (dogs, helicopters...).
Were we onto something??
Anyway, I really admire your dedication to sourcing public domain goodies. Definitely a bunch of gems in there!

So good! Reminds me of The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist.

Zaney, and weird and awesome!

Also such a cool project to curate and sample public domain stuff!

not sure how this came to be in your head, but glad it came out nonetheless, well done!

awesome use of the samples.  gave me some old school fatboy slim vibes. awesome!

I looooove the usage of samples! The rrrooooaah is really cool. Also a lot of cool melodic sounds (the trumpet and the descending line). This gives me a funky 70s vibe, with hardcore remix.
The rubber synth at 2:35 is awesoooome! What a track!

IT'S DANGER TIME

i give this Yellow Lights a big GREEN LIGHT LET'S GOOOOOOOOO

The sample mashing is ace work! LOVE that up-jumpity beat, too, especially when it drops into a distorted bass on the kicks. Nice juxtapositions between busy aggression and quieter uplifted parts, too heart

I already listened a bunch of times! Really cool! Cool grooves over hints of absurdism in the lyrics.

Love the grunts especially! Crazy cool synth solo at 2:30ish!

This track feels really silly, but with an attitude. Love the orchestral hits pushing us along into the rhythms. Great work on this!

This is fun in the best way. Love the orchestral hits and the creative use of samples, and that I couldn’t foresee what would happen next on the first listen smile

Yellow light! cool

Awesome sample work! Super dense layering but it all comes together in a super infectious groove.
Love the old-school vibes in this one, definitely JSR material!

This is SICKKKKKK!!! Wow! So much fun, love all the orchestra hits and the scratchy vinyl. I actually just love it all.

Very cool hiphop vibes going on with some big beat crossover too.
Great use of the samples too.

Fantastic usage of the samples and and awesome energy to the whole thing.  It's a really fun listen.

This is such a super fun and catchy song. Fantastic use of the M8 and your sample selection was _perfect_! Amazing!

A lot of character here between the noisy sampled elements, prchestral hits, spacey reverberant lead, and tempo shift!
