1997 MIDI-THEME.NES+ 2.0 (Chipspace Mix '24)

By ineff on January 18, 2024 6:36 am

Hello!  Posting early this week because I'm heading to MAGfest tomorrow morning.  If any of you are interested in Weeklybeats' communal posting habits: it's 01:22 AM on Thursday morning, and the WB calendar's plus button tells me this is only the 27th upload of the week.

Like last week, this is an overhauled and extended edition of a WB2022 tune (1997-MIDI-THEME.NES) to get it ready to play at Chipspace.  And―like last week―it ended up too long for the showcase set and destined for open mic. tongue

The original idea was this:

I found an unfinished MIDI file I made a quarter century ago.  It was intended to be the theme for a game, but I don't remember the details.  So I've remade (and finished) it to sound like a game―a Gameboy/NES game:  4 channels (Pu1Pu2WavNoi), no samples, no FX, all patches made from scratch using wavsynth at SIZE 20h.

The update fixes articulation that didn't survive the 3.x firmware upgrade and adds a lot of content.   I'm still not certain about some of the levels, but it's time to post.  I won't really know if I got it all right until I hear it there.

The main theme sounds really epic when it comes in near the beginning.  Some nice changes in vibe as it progresses.  Ies pecially liked the little sequence from about 2:19 to 2:30.

Cool track! I dig the variety of rhythmic change ups, particularly the 3:33 transition into the slower bop.

so adventurous! it was so awesome to meet up with you at MAGFest dude, had such a lovely conversation with y'all heart

this was so fun to listen to, what a journey. masterful work.

Such a great NES-feeling, really awesome track!

Epic game track, masterfully done.

I really liked the solo that starts around the 3:00 mark. This track was an adventure! Good work!

wonderful!

loved this one, great work!!

I am SO stoked to hear something SOOOOO oldschool chiptuny coming from the M8. This sounds like such a great limitation to give yourself (4 channels Pu1Pu2WavNoi, no samples, no FX, all patches made from scratch using wavsynth).
I might steal the idea and run with it for the next entry.
Anyways, back to your actual submission: LOVELY tune! Really gave me strong NES shinobi-climbing-up-walls-and-shooting-ninja-stars-at-baddies vibes. At times it feels like more of a parade-march song, which brings an even stronger sense of urgency. This would be a GREAT soundtrack for a platformer or beat 'em up game. Great job. I'd LOVE to see the bundle for this one to see how you got some of those crunchy sounds and articulations. If you do decide to publish it, please do let me know! heart

This is like a hero's theme. Always impressed by your waveform manipulation!

This felt something like Dragon Warrior -> Mega Man -> River City Ransom -> Any Closing Credits. Nice authentic sounding journey from my childhood! Nice track!

Great composition skills. Love the transitions in between the different parts of the track, everything flows very well.

Lots of different ambiances packed on only 4 mins, this is quite the journey.

And nostalgia is strong with those sounds choices.

nice one, I like the use of swing and volume accents! very sick when the beat drops.

Your work is so good, do you have music available for purchase somewhere? Thank you!

pure chip, cool bendy leads and noise percussion use throughout

I was blown away by this. 10/10 points

The slides and vibratos just make all the difference. It's insane to pick up a tune that's 25+ I wonder how many WB participants are younger than this tune smile

oh god the tempo increase.  these hi-hats are so so so so so tight

OOOOF felt that in my soul

Absolutely nailed the vibe, you won't find me splitting hairs over the faithfulness to any particular chip wink Really nice cutting basses in particular. AWESOME rhythm work. Both of those tempo changes slay.

I'm gonna agree with my other self and say it's great, tho the differences between the two are barely noticeable unless you play them side by side
This one's definitely better, because I did exactly that

Amazing track and absolutely nails the NES game music vibe, that tempo increase really threw me back to the megaman times. So much going on and it all really sounds good, no wonder you ran out of chains!

Love the melodies. Nice work! Hope you have/had a great time at the thing!

It goes so many places, an exciting journey in this song and amazing melodies! I love this part 2:16 heart

This is awesome! I really love the variation thats here - loads going on but so much space to hear everything clearly! The percussion is fabulous! The articulations really make a difference. Real old school vibes!

Another awesome track from you! The part at 3:09 made me double-take lol. Had to rewind that section several times heart.

Oof, it always sucks when you run out of phrases on a song. My cover of Thriller ran into that problem and it's so tedious to unravel lol.

Oh! And how was chipspace? Is there a video of your set somewhere? I'd love to check it out!

whoah, chiptune masterclass right here! so good.

Dig the heroic theme early on and like how it picks up as if the title screen just wiped away to reveal the main character coming in on horseback smile  Those individual synths that pan around back and forth, up and down sound extra nice.  'splash-splash-badda-dup-dup-da-dah" yais!
