this is insane, especially considering the source material!
honored!

can't believe you got it to sound like this

rad

whaaat even is this break yessss
my brain is still rattling from this
well done!

This is WILD, you magician you! 🪄

Beautiful plumage. A brief rich delightful trip

This slaps!

Sounds so crisp. Like the music attached directly to my brain. I can see the ingredients, but the dish is way better than the sum of the parts. Lovely.

This is what I'd like to be doing for WB. Short but well executed. I'll have to settle for "will fix later" wink

awesome beat holy moly!!! cool bassline actually! minimalist yet makes the drums shine. GREAT work

and double thanks for that video where you show how you extract slices and put them in a custom order in the same instrument via table - i still have to figure out what went on there.

really cool sounds!! so crispy

Ilzxc you MADMAN. Sounds unbelievably clean, once again. I love all those tiny percussion elements flying around in the stereo field!

Where can I find that video? Had no luck looking it up on Discord. Sounds interesting!

Source material is ace and it’s the honor’s all mine. It’s also really interesting to be sampling a friend, because (as another dear friend pointed out) there’s an inherent dialogue between the art doing the sampling and the art being sampled, regardless of whether or not samples were deployed with mindfulness or not. In this one I feel the dialog is “I just want Drew to be like NO WAY MAN” which may sound silly, but I like the drums in this almost as much as having Orange drink as a friend. heart

Thanks, wanted to reply to the second part of what you said: I had a choice to make ~2 hours before the submission time whether or not to speedtrash a B section that wasn’t working (sounds I made are dope but are not for this song) and I decided would be more interesting to call a failure a failure and instead spend time getting more unique moments in. I’ll see how I feel be end of this next week but I think it was a better choice on Monday morning. smile

Hey, thanks, and glad you found the video helpful. It shows (1) multiple instruments from the same sample — I didn’t make this explicit but it was two breaks (green and purple is what I refer them to because of colors of the video) and I ended up making a GREEN BD / PURRP BD (ilzxc naming schemes) / GREEN SN / PURRP SN / GREEN HH / PURRP HH / CH (little single sound cut that was sped up). (2) TABLE FE plays the row corresponding to the note, which is rad because I can map pitch -> SLI command and still have two additional FX lanes to add additional per-slice dedicated FX. (3) different instruments mean we can fine tune them differently as a group and what’s great about this is that i could eg tweak the filters on the aggressive kick drums instrument and it would affect all the aggressive kick drums due to this organization. Similarly deciding to alter pitch etc can be done in instrument / break-specific batch, eg snare and hat tuning to each other vs to the elements in the tune.

Thanks for kind words, and the vids are in #weeklyvids. (Set your expectations to their lowest setting, though, please.)

I was thinking feathers showing off kind but yours works better with all that lightning in there! (Thats really cool as a gif and would be terrifying in person!)

Everything is Advertising by Orange Drink. It had to be sampled, like watch the video and tell me you’re not gonna sample those drum breaks… (thanks!)

we will see how this survives the eons, but this is it: https://discord.com/channels/134225551081734144/663351061863464964/1465215865749373013
(sorry ilzxc I hope you wanted this message to become shared obsessively by M8 nerds)

Great usage of the orangedrink samples to make a percussive track that never gets boring.  Excellent work.

Where does one get said breaks

Also, amazing work mate

Sweet sweet chopped breaks, nice work on the many layers of tasty percussive earcandy tucked away behind that super solid bass groove. Super clean mix too, you've managed to keep it cool even though there's a ton of stuff going on. Those Fors plugins sound amazing, it's basically cheatcodes for super slick sounds. Really need to get my M8 hooked up to my mac so I can run them as external instruments.

Seeing how you labeled this as a demo, you plan to build it out into a full-fledged track?

omg this is bonkers good. incredible source material + incredible chops heart

also hell yeah Felt Instruments. Rysy getsa lot of use over here, and i recently grabbed the scaled down version of Kolor. so rad

what a bad ass drum groove from the start with the bass!  oof! **head_nods** those stutter fills and cymbal hits oh yais! definitely needed a second listen \m/

Haha, im chill—ego is a lot less about others and a lot more about pleasing my own taste. (I wish I could tell you it made me happier but it didn’t, I’m a fucking asshole to myself about things I make…)

Appreciate it! Would be delighted to maybe sample some of your stuff too, now that I’m an uncle to your delightful pups.

I watched the EVERYTHING IS ADVERTISING and told Drew the breaks in the tune were asking to be sampled and he sent me a wav. smile

Thanks for kind words!

Yeah needs a B section, one was planned but didn’t pan out due to time & other projects. I generally force myself not to vomit own opinions about my shit cuz they’re rarely kind but I do need to mark when I like something (this) or when others respond better than expected (pencils) as a non-committal highlight to maybe develop something more.

FORS machines are sweet spot abundance but the dark side of that is that you can animate them wildly and they still sound great—so the bass instrument contains bass, noise, and upper register highlights all in one. (Video in weeklyvids of the parameter dance.) TLDR: Ess makes magic and I’ll be using his stuff in various capacities thru out the year to get good at designing less obvious sounds (goals are like pseudo-acid yang only a cymbal type
synth).

I’ve not used Rysy much, I really like Kolor and am very impressed with Brut (their latest). I think Tomek’s approach w/ how he makes instruments is remarkable. Mikey303 once said that with pedals / FX sometimes you pick tools for transparency and other times you invest for the character they provide and Tomek kinda solved for the character part in virtual instruments (and kindly gave me Dust and Dirt and Noise knobs!)

Would love to cut up something of yours soon wink

Yeah, that would be super cool.  You for sure have my permission to sample anything of mine you'd like.

In the words of Ricky Martin, She Bangs

This is so cool! I love how clicky it feels

Nice chopping. I like how you mangled those drums.

I also love the bass line.

Sounds great! Nice use of the OD drums. Awesome bassline!

the level of detail here is crazy.. i love it!

Oh wow that groove is strong with this track. That huge bass and asymetric beat are super hip. I love the plic ploc lines also - just perfect sound choice as counterpoint. Loving it.

It's truly crazy how you're able to extract sounds from samples to the point that you create entirely new sounds nearly unrecognizable from the source. Straight up alchemy. Awesome tune.

Such a clean and beautiful mix, really loving all the rhythmic explorations and accentuations, how you create such a polished sound in everything you do, will always leave me in awe and wonderment heart

I dig the blink-and-you'll-miss it choppiness of the melodic elements against the thicker bass, especially at the beginning of the piece! Looking forward to the next piece.

Nice!

SUCCESS

Still dig this.
