We need an uprising

By horatiuromantic on February 8, 2026 11:51 pm

Here's this version - piano and spoken word w/ lyrics

Here's the piano solo version too. In case you don't wanna be reminded of the topic of the lyrics, you can listen to the piano solo and imagine it's about whatever else you want.

PROCESS and THOUGHTS

The composition was done last night (out of an impro I didn't record) and today I did a one take impro around it. It's a theme based on a pedal F with Bb-C Eb-F in every octave, then I change the bass but keep the same arpeggio thingy. It's very loose, and there is no particular groove. I also performed a version of it earlier today on acoustic piano at the dancing place, it was fun!

Once I had the instrumental, I wanted to make it about something more, so I tried to write lyrics about anti-fascism, killing people in the streets ... etc.  I don't feel so good about the lyrics, not because it's not good to say fuck fascism in various ways, but because it's not a very coherent message that can really be received by someone who disagrees with it; and if I make a protest song that only the people who already agree will be receptive to, then what the fuck am I doing? This lack of a clear idea that I wanna transmit is why I don't like the lyrics right now... I feel like there must be a better way to do this, probably need more time to really develop the lyrics. Also, it's not only about the US situation, altho it is definitely a big part of it. It's also about Russia invading Ukraine, Israel bombing their neighbours, and other warmongering nations attacking people who don't deserve to be attacked. So it all weighs on my head while trying to write it, you can hopefully understand why I can't be too coherent about it.

It's a struggle and don't you think I haven't been thinking about these issues while I was making fuckin "flower boy" and other fun lil songs, it's just that I can't cope with this global situation and I need to escape and music is my way to escape.... and I fuckin hate that they are invading my happy place but what can I do about it.

Anyway hope you enjoy, and sorry to invade your happy place with it too, but it's important to not fall into apathy.

This is so incredible. The crunchy rhodes is so powerful and evocative. Spectacular work.

absolutely beautiful and powerful work

i'm going to lovingly and push back to your comments about your lyrics.

"if I make a protest song that only the people who already agree will be receptive to, then what the fuck am I doing?"

It's not your responsibility to negotiate with terrorists and try to make them understand and empathize.  Also, terrorists are not really, by definition, open to negotiation and hearing other sides and receiving feedback.

I don't really have the strength/courage/energy to talk about all the atrocities all the time (or maybe I do the best I can) but even if people agree with it, it can be so empowering and validating to have someone speak up for you.

So I think your lyrics, your music, your presence, your mere existence, is so important and really uplifts the downtrodden.

So that's what the f I think you are doing.

You are lifting us all up.

^this & heart

such a prophetic sound and, man, thanks for taking the time to write this and makes us reflect a bit on a lot of stuff that is going on... about the lyrics, I think it's hard (if not impossible) to write something universal that everyone is open to listen to and empathize with. so, good job!

Agreed with orangedrink.

It's enough that the song reminds people. It's so easy to hide from the insane shit gong on in this world, by burying your head in the sand. (No judgement there either. We all have our methods of coping, and sometimes it's just too much to bare.) But your words are a call to action. It's not okay. Killing people in the streets is not okay. We cannot allow ourselves to feel apathy. We need an uprising.

The rhodes work is absolutely amazing too.
Meditative, dreamy, simple and complex art the same time.
Love this, man!

Powerful message, very toasty pianos. Love how distorted they are (did you add saturation or it is one of the patches that is as much saturated?)

As Drew said, it does worth something. If yourself doesn't encourage hatred, kill people and behave as good as you can, you are more then OK to name things that are wrong, even if those elite are not ready to listen.

Take care. Be good.

Thank you so much! The distortion on SV-2S is great, coming through the tube preamp!

Thanks for this perspective. I'm pretty sure it's not the first time you told me, and you were right then and are right now! Thanks for the reminder. It's easier to speak up when you're not directly a victim, and it's worth it for others around to feel like they are not alone. I gotta remember that. It feels like too little but it's something, and it can be enough if enough people say it together.

Take care buddy, lots of love.

Thank you! Yea, I agree, and I know we should still do it even if it's not universal. Still trying tho hahah, undefeated in my stubbornness.

Thanks! I think the main idea of the upwards arpeggio also gave a bit of steam to this "we need an uprising" idea, but it felt more like a chorus to go "killing people in the streets is not ok". it is super fun to play that part, and uses my whole body and concentration to do it properly enough and on time to hit the next bass note as I'm on the opposite end of the keyboard heh. coupled with the lyrics it gets a meditation effect, like thru the effort I can put more intensity into my words... even tho this time I don't play and sing at once.

weirdly, I feel a strange need to confirm that more people believe the killing line first, then we can start talking about an uprising. however absurd and extreme this might sound. (we really can't possibly disagree on killing ppl in the streets with anybody, right? right?!?!)

Thanks!!! The distortion comes from the tube preamp in the SV-2S and actually also the compressor in it, it adds a satisfying crunch, long tail to the notes, and makes the distortion even more distorted. On top of that I reduced the high end so it doesn't pling too hard that bell sound, and I also add tape echo which gives it a little weird modulation. And a little chorus maybe, not sure if I had it on.

Oh and actually also a tape simulation at the final bus. The high notes were super duper harsh so I added the final tape emulation specifically to tone the highs down and turn them into sexy distorted tape saturation, which kept their edge but without killing your ears as much. They also help gel the mix together too, as a bonus, not that it would be too complicated when it's just voice and piano, but still.

The piano can go even more distorted (* anime voice * this is not even my final form), I will def get there at some point heheh

thanks for the appreciations

Ooooh the SV-2S sounds awesome and dreamy.  Gave me Vangelis vibes at times.  Excellent work!

Breaking away from apathy and remaining aware of how your happy places have been invaded are definitely essential to this world, especially if you play it out to others who might be feeling muted, themselves, and don't realize, until you do this, that if we could all express how we feel in a constructive way like this, the world would evolve much faster. You've offered out to the world, a solid amount of inspiration here, thank you heart

"lies are infinite, the truth is only one" - i love this line
really emphasizes the difficulty of the battle, especially when lies can spread at light speed
great work

keep cooking, horatiuromantic heart

I'm definitely gonna stick to the instrumental version, I understand the message, but that one is just so, so pretty.

Thanks! haven't listened much to Vangelis but I know it stands for good sound design so I appreciate it! That's why I left the piano solo version up too, can be enjoyed once the lyrics will be obsolete in like a few years tops fingers crossed ;D

thanks a lot! I really hope so, and didn't realize how important it can be to reiterate things like this even among like minded folks.

NICE I got one. glad it resonates. I prefer that one too, most of the time. thanks for checking em out.

I normally don't mind the spoken vocals, but in this case it's just a little too distracting. Are you gonna upload that one somewhere?

Well there is the youtube version. Or U mean the audio?

Yea, the audio.

This is great! I’m glad you’re continuing to make music videos too. Visual components to these pieces really help draw the audience in smile

🤘 FUCK YOUR COOKIE 🤘

I'd love to see some more collabs. I feel like you are at the peak of what you can do solo

DESLRV wrote:

I didn't consider it. If you really want it, message me on discord and I'll send a copy. Otherwise u gotta rip it the oldschool way.

Thanks! Yea I really like it too, and it is nicer to share on youtube for everybody else other than WB. A little ego goblin inside me is also happy to show off that it's actually live ;D even tho it's often the Nth take

punk!!!

thanks for saying it, tho I def feel I have a long way to go on my own artistic pursuit.

would also like collabs but it's really hard when everybody is busy. it's just logistics not really anything else. I have been trying to meet a drummer friend for some weeks and it still hasn't happened. other folks don't wanna record, etc. oh well. at least I got Levi lol.

preach! solid track this week

We really do need an uprising. Powerful work and I agree with everything said so far!

that's a very nice angry piano!  maybe it makes sense that the lyrics don't feel quite right because a lot feels (and is) wrong at the moment?  and there's always next week for another go at it.

Beautiful music and powerful words.
The theme reminds me of MGnetc Fields song "World Love", where they sing the line "Live, music, wine and revolution" but of course they're also very different

I didn't have an ambient protest song on my WB26 bingo card and yet here we are. Good job! Keep up the good work.
