The Beginner

By horatiuromantic on January 4, 2026 6:01 pm

Hello everybody! Welcome back to WeeklyBeats, super excited to be back with you all!!!

I'm very excited to start WeeklyBeats FROM THE BEGINNING! It's my 3rd year, previously completed 52 tracks in 2022 and ~38 in 2024. I am hoping to get closer to 52 again this year!

I've had a wonderful year in 2025, full of music, playing live, learning a lot and having a great time. Now I'm back to working full-time as a programmer on a new small indie game with some friends, and thus I'll have limited time for music. But rest assured, WB is my TOP priority music-wise, and I am looking forward to listen and share and learn and grow with you all, as is my ritual every 2nd year.

ABOUT THE BEGINNER

I made this on my dad's electric guitar, that I got him for Christmas! It was a great time, and it started from the basic groove in A:
1 - 1  8 - 8  7b - 7b  5 - 5
I wrote it thinking it's a simple song, anybody can learn, and it will help him develop the skill while having fun. He played in high school but now he is a bit rusty. The groove is supposed to be addictive and you just wanna keep playing and messing around with it forever. It really was catchy and I couldn't stop playing it and singing it in my head as I was coming up with the idea around Christmas. Then I wrote some quick lyrics and melody and included the most important chord on electric guitar: the Jimi Hendrix E7+9 major-minor.

Officially I only started making the song when I arrived back in Copenhagen on 30 dec, so technically I am within the one week rule, btw! Not that it matters that much. But it does matter that on 31 dec I was SUPER LUCKY to get a good deal on my brand new Korg SV-2S, an electric piano I've had my eyes on. And I used it for this tune. It's a pleasure to play it, such a wonderful spaceship of a thing. You will hear a LOT from it in the coming months.

What about the lyrics tho? What's this about the beginner? It's both about my dad and his new life as a guitarist superstar and about my endless pursuit of learning and seeing things from the perspective of a beginner. And the drive to push towards getting better and getting there no matter the cost. I also was inspired by swing dancing which I've become kind of addicted to over the last year or so. And of course I had some nice dance partners, one or let's be fair, a few of which are the inspirations for the second verse!

Alright, again I am super glad to be back, and I can't wait to hear what everybody is making!!! CHEERS and LET'S GO WEEKLYBEATS 2026, FROM THE BEGINNING!!!!!!

Please enjoy the music from yours truly, THE BEGINNER himself a.k.a. me!!!

OH I forgot to say, I also filmed myself performing some of the takes, and made a quick and dirty video!!! Sadly the piano is not the correct take because I lost that one (and also I spliced the piano performance among ~4 different takes) but who cares!

Enjoy the video and give it some algorithm love!

Hell yeah! Keep swinging those moves big_smile

Really awesome, love the solo!

Yoooooooooo... that wurli tone... and the chops... dude... next level.  If this is the beginning, I'm looking forward to the middle.

This song makes me smile.

So good! Those SV keys sound amazing... I've also had my eye on one but I don't have room for it hahaha. I love the action on them so much tho.  Is this the internal distortion tone?!  (wild if it is - can you insert a mic though it?)  Love the Song - all the good stuff and very weekly beats themed hahaha.  Looking foward to more of this!

The legend is back big_smile

Wuuh! Amazing energy and great performance on both the piano and vocals. Don’t notice that you spliced together the takes, feels live to me. Would be a nice one to hear you play on stage with a full band !!

Hell yeah be careful you might shred it

I love the groovy, catchy tune and the silly (but heckin' awesome) vocals/lyrics. I think the Korg was an A+ purchase and the perfect addition. I can imagine myself enjoying this in a dark bar with friends.

The the piano! The singing is also really solid

amazing! I can feel the Doors are shaking

Thanks you all! Too kind!

Thanks! It’s the sv2 first e piano with one of the internal distortion and compression, which also distorts with some nice crunch, and finally routed thru the UAD fender amp sim. Called Dream amp 65 smth like that.

Thanks!! I got good at splicing takes to get better final takes. With video it would be v obvious i guess.

We played this with the trio w drums and guitar and me on bass+piano but it was a bit too rough and vocals didnt come thru. We will def play it with the band!!! At some point live too… for now rehearsals.

Hey!

Welcome back. Super happy to see you are back, love your skill. This track breath fun, you sound great and it feels like you had a blast recording this.

Love especially the rhodes work.

Dad didn't get to use his guitar for long before you grabbed it huh? big_smile

Hahaha it’s true, but it’s also my sneaky way to inspire him cause _in the beginning_ it can be daunting to practice and stuff, until you have fun… i hope he finds the inspiration to play a bit every day or at least every week. I know he will be happier if he does!

*hugs*
I totes dig this song, and your hair. Can I haz your hair?

aw man thank you! it's so addictive I could have made this track very long but decided to keep it tight. still 2x 16 bar solos can be considered stretching it but I'm happy with the result.

Thanks Mr Dr! yes a very different dark bar than I usually imaginary populate with sound heheh. but it would be cool to go more in this blues-jazz-rock direction so I'll keep exploring. maybe one day you will enjoy it in a dark bar with friends

ahh thank you. me too. been looking forward to this.

instant slick funky groove from the start! ooh yea let the keys ride!  It feels like someone lit your keyboard on fire with that solo \m/ The korg looks like a lot of fun to play.  Excellent work!

Dude, you're driving that piano like a race car and trying really hard to not fly over the edge, and then still go over the edge.

hej! great story and great submission. can't wait to hear more

The message in the song is great! The song given me DeWolff vibes and I love that band

Wow, this thing grooves like there's no tomorrow.  The electric piano sounds awesome.  And good luck to your dad on his guitar journey.  Maybe we'll be checking out his WB tracks soon!

Lol no words. This is fantastic. Okay some words - that hot piano is everything. "I like to hear you screaming" right after "ears bleeding"... delightful.

Nice groove and enjoyable modified chords! Very nice crunchy electric piano sound here, too. I could see a player getting into this chord progression and playing it over and over. Nicely done!

i really want to see you perform live with a full band one day!  it would rock so hard.
welcome back!

Beginner mind is best mind, but you're clearly no beginner, my man. Dig the distorted free-jazzing Rhodes a lot. Your vocals are also improving, I'd say. This first track feels complete, deliberate, and mature.

No notes, five stars.

This is awesome! Really dig the 60s rock vibe to this. Super fun and energetic. The song lyrics are a good reminder to maintain a beginner's mindset. That's the most fun place to be I think. Less pressure from expectations and more of a focus on the joy of just getting better at every little thing. Going to try to maintain that attitude myself this year I think.

Epic singing on this track! What a wonderful way to start the year. Very impressive!

Hell yeah man, what a jam

Happy New Year H!

welcome back, rocker! digging the overdrive on those keys!

Thank you! This groove was born because it was so catchy, it was like an evolutionary process where the grooves that were the catchiest survived.

Thanks a lot! When it comes to playing and grooving it can be very simple but still effective, I'm into exploring this at the moment. Sound is great because of the piano with the tube distortion. I kinda still prefer electric piano-wise the Electra 88 from Spark. maybe I'll do some back and forth someday just to feel the difference. The wurli is amazing tho!

Haha, thank you! Especially for the comment on the vocals! I def feel like a beginner there, but if it comes through well, it means I'm on the right path!

Thank you! Yeaaa beginner mindset is great! Also, ignorance is bliss, and everybody loves an underdog, so being a beginner kinda has this same spirit of lots of potential, not much can go wrong, and you can just have fun, while everybody is rooting for ya! It's great!

Wuhuu still reeling from week 1! It's gonna be a good year!
