She's talking to another man on the phone

By horatiuromantic on January 14, 2024 11:12 pm

Enjoy this surprise pop song that I'm very proud of, and let loose the criticisms and opinions, I'd love to know your reactions!

This song was inspired by a true story (or multiple), and began as a little voice message I left for myself with the song idea. It was some bad guitar strumming plus mumbling ending with "she's talking to another man on the phone".

Welcome back on the drums our friend Levi. Apart from him, I recorded every instrument: vocals, acoustic piano, electric piano with wah, two acoustic guitars, the moog bass. I started on the song today, starting with half the lyrics, then a bit of harmonies altho some were already on the initial voice message, then finding a good drum sound (I tried someone other than Levi but in the end Levi is the king of drums in logic pro). Then I worked on the bass and piano, going back and forth because I was afraid it will sound too much like the first song, since I'm more or less using the same instruments. Then I tracked the guitars, then the last was the e piano. Then I took a bit of back and forth but was fairly good at scoping down and making choices.

The intro with the phone and piano happened around halfway thru the process when I knew I wanted some kind of intro, and decided to adapt a real message.

I finished around 22 and then had time for food and a bit of mastering. I added too many compressors everywhere and at first the track was way too compressed and clipping everywhere. To solve it, I tried reducing each of the compressors and volumes on each track little by little. I was afraid I'll ruin it completely but in the end I managed to save it and it doesn't clip so bad anymore. It still feels a bit noobish and overcompressed but at least I could add a bit more low end to make the track fatter. Please let me know your thoughts on the mix/master, if you can suggest any tricks/improvements.

I learned how to control the bass and play it more straight so the filter transient thing happens when it should - I will have to revisit the first song later on with this new knowledge.

The lyrics are perfect! I was wondering what the wah like instrument was, it kinda sounded like a guitar but kinda different - I see it's a piano. What a cool idea! This is like a crazy cocktail party with a lot of character. The lyrics are perfect, and the vocal sound you get there is just right - the tone, and recordings work well. You are making alternative pop from another dimension. There is a radio station in a parallel universe that plays your music all the time, and you know what, it's a great universe. Let's bring it here too.

Not too pop for a pop song... smile

Yeah, there are lots of elements on the track so it is difficult to have a "breathing" mix in that case where different instruments doesn't fight each other too much.

Trying to find a spectrum space for each instrument helps, sometimes some hard panning here and there too. Don't worry mix isn't too bad, but yes it is busy.

Compression can be a bitch and suck lots of impact as well.

Track made me smile, it is a good one.

When you "sha-a-are your dreams" at 1:00, that little ascending vocal flourish is just effing killer. Love it. The piano solo in the middle is great.

Awesome track this week man! The layered and evolving instrumentation throughout the song is great. I agree with Blighter's comment about the articulation on your phrases being very smooth and well executed. That little piano flourish at the end with the voice message is sweet.

Also, I still don't really know how to use a compressor properly and I just throw one on every single track and bus and bring down the thresholds and hope it's doing something nice for the mix, haha. So I'm a noob myself, but I thought the mix here sounded pretty good.

What a great song! Irony, fun, rhythm, improvisation.. that’s all in there! We should play it live ahah

this track got transported out of the 20th century directly into weeklybeats, which i think is pretty damn cool. the vibe is SUBLIME

I bet she's talking to this song, because this sounds very sexy.
The mix is excellent, by the way.

Love the lyrics and the vibe! Perfect way to start the week! heart

The mix sounds good, even on shitty laptop speakers. I love the sound of the bass; nice and crisp.

Thanks so much! I kept the piano to the minimum before the short solo and I think it worked well. Otherwise I'm noticing that I am giving away too much of my fast-playing vocabulary (of which I have only a few versions of runs that I can actually do, everything else is just avantgarde lol). Glad you enjoyed the wah on it!

Thanks! I don't think pop is a bad thing by the way ;D but it is somewhat descriptive as a style, dunno what else to call it.

About finding space for the instruments, the problem is my instruments of choice all have more or less the same spectrum, namely various types of pianos and organ, and guitar. So I try to arrange them to play different octave areas, and maybe sometimes the timbre helps distinguish them, like the electric piano with wah sounds way higher than the ac piano so it's totally fine to play together. The ac piano has a lot of power to muffle things, when played furiously, so I maybe abused that in this track after the last verse.

Thanks for the comment and the tips!

Yay! Glad you liked that part, I've been having second thoughts since I don't have such good vocal technique for it. I have a feeling singers will appreciate it more just knowing it's kinda hard to pull off. And thanks, I also like the solo big_smile

Thanks a lot! Yea, sounds like I managed. It's even more poppy the more compressed, but it sucks out the space. I like it when tracks have more space, so it's something to work towards in future tracks.

Haha indeed! I will always treasure the sounds of the 20th century! Thanks!

Hahha, I thought maybe people hear this and think I'm the guy their girl is talking to on the phone which would be pretty ironic. Thank you so much!

Thanks! I did focus on the bass, actually did a second mixing pass after the first export cause I had some time and I felt it needed extra bass. I also listened to it on mac speakers which are not the worst. Most difficult test is to listen on the phone and in the car, and making both sound good. Alas I don't have a car, but I have an iLoud speaker which is the next best thing - it's pretty boomy by default.

But I also feel that when making a track and mix/mastering it right after making it, you are a bit too close to really do a stellar job mixing/mastering. That's why many musician friends recommended me that other people should master your music, because they bring out good parts that you might miss, just because they have fresh ears. I haven't tried it yet, but at least for myself I know that fresh ears help in my own work.

Hi Horatiu! Such a skilfully written song, would not have been suprised if this had been released on a record label. Definitely sticks to the head. Apart from a love song it also kind of works as a metaphor for the tragicomic reality of life. Also good job Levi!

A heartbreaking story on a stunning jazzy classic hit. Your piano blows me away. Really WOW.

haha, now i kinda wanna hear the track from the other man's point of view, "she's hanging out with another man in real life" (i guess that makes you the lucky one) big_smile
great romantic vibe to this one, going by the title, i didn't expect it to have such a grand feeling of 'hope' throughout. beautifully done heart

yessss that piano solo!

Fun, danceable vibes! There's something Sinatra-like about the delivery of some lines that I dig here! I also really like how the strumming guitars fit in the mix - present and adding a rhythmic component without getting in the way of more prominent features.

Thank you! I'll compile the hits from this year on a new album for sure!

Hahha, true! thanks heart Everyone is the "other" for everyone else. Glad you got a positive sense, and don't take it too seriously. I'm a hopeful romantic!

Glad to hear it! They are panned to the max, and I really think they add a good balance to all these busy pianos.

WOW I love this, it reminds me of black midi by a lot. Great job!!

Returning the listen and glad I did! I like the vibes your song gives off, feels like its from the 50's 60's and the mix has that old school live recording feel. Piano solo was killer with all the little licks in the background, very dynamic sounding! Some reason this song just makes me think of "My Way - Frank Sinatra"(I love that song btw) vocals shares a similar cadence and mixed with the live instruments!

Dig that kind of smoochy 70s lounge/disco vibe going on.  Nice piano solos too.

As for the mix feedback, perhaps try give the tracks their own sonic space and don't go too heavy on the compression unless it's for creative purposes.

Cool track, definitely caught a vibe with this one, flows well and feels smooth and schmaltzy. Not sure if I would repeat the voice message at the end, though overall I really liked this aspect and feel it brought story and set context for the track

Beautiful song with lots of soul. I love the shifts between the different emotions. Though there are many instruments and lots going on I think that there's a beauty to that too. It's quite different form my sound which makes it very fascinating for me to listen to! Though I understand it can be harder to mix it all together. Sounds good to my ears. But since you asked for feedback, if you want different instruments to come out more, there could be one or two moments where you go all minimal and only focus on one instrument. But that would make it a completely different track and sound though. If that doesn't resonate then by all means keep doing this. The "maximalism" is beautiful in its own way too. smile

Really cool vibe and mix! Love all the effects. Very passionate performances.

Great work! Love unrequited always a good bet on grabbing the heart

so good, this would be a great end credits for a romantic comedy film

yeah, there are too many compressors on the instruments and the vocals are a touch too loud.  In those situations I'd say bite the bullet and start mixing the track over from scratch.  the problem there is if you've been mixing for too long, and at too loud a volume, your ears will be kinda shot.  so not very helpful in a WB time-crunch situation.  I miss much of the drums and acoustic guitar when things get loud.

BUT the track is sick and love the voicemail idea!

Excellent point about the mix. It's what I plan to do later on, either that or re-record with a real band, and treat the WB version as a demo. Thanks a lot for the comment!

Thanks, and good analysis. I also see it that way, that too much change in response to feedback sometimes just ends up in a different track altogether. In this case I think the over-compressed issue can be fixed and still give the same vibe and intention of the track just with a clearer and better overall sound.

Thanks! Fair about repeating it. Funny story: the repeated snippet (voc+piano) was there because I moved it on the timeline while recording the other stuff, so the timing matched without me noticing. I concluded it was meant to be this way big_smile it could work without tho, to improve listening on repeat wink

Thanks a lot! I get "crooner" comments a lot, I accept it by now as a good thing haha

HAhaha! Thanks for the comment. Black midi is such a funny thing. In this case there was little to no midi-tweaking or quantizing of any kind, it was all performance takes except for Levi the drummer.

Dude that wah e-piano is fucking sick.  I've never thought of doing that but it's got such a cool funky sound.  Overall killer track too man, you've got some serious piano chops.
