Project 2025

By horatiuromantic on December 29, 2024 8:41 pm

Hi everyone! Here's my final piece for 2024, a premonition for 2025 that I hope will give you a good end/wrap-up of the last year and a good start for the new year!

I'm proud of what I've accomplished this year in terms of music, and you weeklybeats friends are a massive part of it! So thank you from the depths of my heart! heart heart heart And congrats to all of you who managed to finish the year with however many tracks!

The YEAR 2024

In summary, this year I released an album, made lots of songs and played many concerts in Europe (well ok one concert in Romania, and like 6-20 in Denmark depending if you count the open mics as concerts), and made a lot of video recordings that I'll process over the next period and put up on various platforms, probably mainly youtube which I invite you to follow.

The past few weeks I didn't do WB which is a shame but since August 2024 I played close to 20 concerts out of which ~13 were my own music, 8 were SOLO concerts out of which 4 were fully (!!!) improvised, and some of the others were also heavy with improvisation but also with my songwriting, played my album with a band, and uhhhh so many open mics and various jams!

I feel like I really stepped up my music game this year (esp the last half) and will continue to work on improving and expanding my music practice with more collaborations, a funky band, more solo concerts both improvised and written (composed?) music, maybe both guitar and piano based .... !??! Of course a lot of synth stuff too, and singing/spoken stuff etc. Basically a lot going on and a lot of directions to explore, and maybe even with some luck get closer to making a modest living from music (wouldn't that be a dream!!!). Currently I'm at half a rent from a few months of playing concerts, which I feel is quite something!!! but of course it's nothing in the grand scheme so I def gotta crank that part of it up.

The most exciting musical project of all for me is the improvised storytelling that is also hinted in this track. Altho when it's only solo, it has a different vibe, than when I can do it with a band, where I am free to explore the storytelling while the other musicians are providing support and reactions and helping to drive the story and the energy. I hope to develop this into a really unique thing that I can take around to some festivals at some point! Since you weeklybeaters are all over the world maybe it could be cool to travel around and play in different places and do like a tour where I also meet you physically to hang out and make music together! It would be so nice! Just have to find the excuse to come, via some kinda opportunity to play, festival gig or whatev... maybe it's just a dream.

The YEAR 2025

My musical plan for 2025 is to write more and better songs, record some, play more with my band (and with other friends), maybe even play at some festivals, and generally learn about how I can get paid for my music (without too much compromise).

Speaking of cashflow, I also just started a Patreon where I'll try to gather some of the people who are interested in keeping a closer eye on my creative process, and why not, give people a chance to support me in exchange for extra behind-the-scenes access. If you're interested in following it even for free I'd be very grateful! Let me know if you have experience with it or want anything in particular shared, and I'd be up for shaping it towards that. Also let me know if you have a creator account yourself, or rather prefer a different platform. I'm not in a position to support right now, but I am happy to follow...

About Project 2025 (the track)

I made this track as a spiritual successor to all the Levi tracks from the beginning of the year, and with the improvised storytelling flair that I want to pursue further. I jammed a bit to find a groovy bassline, settled on some funky sounding electric piano chords to set a mood that I can play around with, and then went to town telling the story. Later, the other elements started happening, and I basically did the track minute by minute, or like section by section - the intro, then the next part, etc.  doing it vertically so the sound is there all the way, rather than finishing each layer of instrumental before the next.

I recorded it with my trusty SM58 thru my audio interface (Volt 476) in Romania, where I'm currently celebrating the holidays with my family.

I used LA2A compressor on the voice, and a send for TAL reverb 4, UAD brigade chorus and UAD galaxy tape echo.

I used my fav electric piano from UAD with the built-in effects - leslie speaker, chorus, delay.

I used UAD minimoog plugin for the bassline and the screaming synth. The midi controller I have has a pretty decent pitch bend mod wheel so I had fun with that. it's the Fatar Studiologic VMK88 old midi keyboard - so good! great heavy action, lots of knobs. Oh yea bass goes thru a UAD fairchild 660 for extra grit, but not sure it's needed after I tweaked the bass filter to leave more high end after listening on laptop speakers.

I used Levi the drummer (remember him?) plus "beat machine" Anton, also a drummer from logic that plays the ...beat machine.  I added Fairchild 660 compressor to Levi to make his drums have more OOMPH.

I used wack strings from Logic to add that extra layer of "thought" when the story gets to that point. Curious to hear what people will be reminded of - for me it is def a callback to headhunters herbie stuff altho I tried not to steal stuff but rather go with the sound I feel the need to hear.

Final mixdown with some tape effect, some eq to boost the bass and high, and some compression to glue it all together. My "mastering" setup heheh.

Oh yea! Surprise in the track is that my mom did actually interrupt while recording to go to lunch! I decided to keep that section because it fit the vibe of the track.

THANKS TO YOU

Thanks for reading and listening and thanks for all your WB contributions this year! Proud of this community and being part of it! Hope to hear many of you during next year, and of course back again in 2026! Can't believe it's been already a year!!!!!!!!!! Feels like we started yesterday!

Smoooth track and hilarious lyrics. Great combo!

That bass is really doing things for me.

I vibe with this. I vibe with this hard!

This had me absoutely rolling. Super funny and great work!!

It’s just so good. It’s got that King Missile-esque story telling over a groove, and the groove is siiiick. That bass is all funk

I like how sparse and minimalist it is. This perfectly appropriate beat, with the heavy bass, and the zappa like lyrics and singing. It's just beautiful.
Patreon is a very good idea for musician support!

Oops submitted too fast. Thank you for all the music in 2024 and I wish you the best in 2025. it has been inspiring to see how you have increased your pace of live performance, I hope that will continue in 2025! smile

Hey! Wish you a marvelous 2025!

Thanks a lot for your part on the collab.

love from Longueuil.

Haha, long-ass beat squad represent! I submitted one last week, with similar purpose: as a sendoff to 2024. Yours is definitely fitting.

Those "interrupted" vocals made me laugh, but they are perfect! You developed a really cool Waits-like vocal style. It's a journey to listen to the story! I enjoyed the '70s free jazz background for it.

Congratulations on finishing WB24! The real question is: will 2025 see the return of Mr Woofmantic?

That sounds like an awesome year of music, congrats!! I love your storytelling tracks so I'm curious to see how you're develop that further! Thanks a lot for your unique music, keep it up! smile

Well, you do have to eat, you're a growing young fellow!!! Hahahahaha...
You know, I appreciate you using this awesome work to reclaim the name "Project 2025", which, here in the USA, is something truly ghastly. So thank you for that. From now on, whenever someone mentions it, I'll think about this instead. Much more pleasant! Hahahahaha...

It's been awesome to see your growth and deep dive into music this year, this has been awesome. Every time you came back and told us about another concert felt like another collective win for everyone. Super proud of you and wishing you even better things in 2025!!!

i love the biggening!

Despite the humorous intentions the composition is great. My head was bopping. Loved the bass line and the various eerie synths. Not a lot of feedback I could offer except that the monologue grew a little tiring. The falsetto harmonies were a nice reprieve, more of that might have sounded cool.

Great stuff congrats on so much music in 2024!!!

Shout out to mommy Romantic. Glad to hear this year has been good for you, it's been one hell of a ride with you around.

Ha, this was entertaining. Loving the groove and these tantalizing predictions have me smiling. Worms, Bill Murray, what a fun trippy yarn.
Congrats on WB and the other 2024 accomplishments and best of luck with the 2025 goals!

The delivery of "like there's been a...big...explosion of.....poop, all up in there" absolutely sent me. Really dig the groove and the crazy warbly synth, what a fun tune. Improvisational storytelling is a really cool idea. Congrats on WB '24!

I have been deep in the 70ies in zappaland. Great track. Wish you all the best for the year 2025. thank you for all your music.

thanks for sharing all your music and musical adventures w/ us this year, Horațiu! wishing you all the best  big_smile

Hi folks, thanks so much for the comments and appreciations on this and throughout the year! Especially thanks to all for listening and for the live reactions in the W52 discord stream!

I kept pushing back the time when I reply to all these nice messages, and wanting to listen to more of your songs and give them the time they deserve, but life keeps happening and I'm able to fill my days with other things that seem reasonably important... but truth be told, this community IS actually important so I wanna make sure you know how much I love you all!

Thanks for the comments. I always use them as a kind of compass of what works and what to pursue further, so when I read about you vibing with the bass grooves, or finding my stories funny, it makes me wanna do more of it!

Thanks! I hope to do this kinda music for a whole live show with a funky band. I have done it so far with a wacky avantgarde band or solo, and it seemed to be well received!

Ahh man bass is the key to making it funky! Glad you like it. BTW been listening to Funkadelic catalogue and there is SO MUCH good bass in there, and so diverse. big inspo!

Hahha great to hear big_smile when everything is so grim in the world, this is one of the better ways I know how to get away from it ... and also to point it out. I sometimes feel like I'm not political enough! but humor can be the way through the hardest of times.

THANKS! I will investigate this. Detachable pine cone is the first track I found, good sign already!

Great stuff! Thanks for the kind words! Appreciate your music too! Still have to listen to that long 40min track of yours! It's the obvious conundrum, make short tracks and have people wanting more, or make long ass tracks and have people not have time to hear them hahah! I promise to get around to it tho!

Mr Woofmantic also on the horizon, but an elusive character for now! He is still busy with the Zium Exposition gig!

Sweet! Thanks for the kind words! I hope to continue to make you proud! *cry*
I am glad you made that connection with the title! I didn't even wanna mention it, that "other" project 2025 is not something I wanna give the time of day to. But yea, seriously speaking I hope everything will go well, altho I expect lots of terrible things before it gets better.... We gotta continue to make important art that can inspire people to do better, think better, laugh at the evil and mean people out there and seek more love and whimsicality around us!!! We are all ONE PEOPLE and I hope we can all understand this before we mess it all up for ourselves...

Sick hah! thanks for the appreciations and the feedback! It's a long track for sure, so it's bound to get tiring unless enough stuff happens, altho if too much happens too fast it might lose some listeners to the chaos. Because even tho I know what I want to convey with a musical idea, I gotta make sure listeners can understand it just from the music itself, in the given time, without the context of what I know about it. I tried lately to lean into sounds and grooves for a bit longer than what I think is enough, for that reason. It's a tough balance to reach for all audiences, but it's worth hearing your impression, so thanks for mentioning it!

I love this about WB when I get various feedback, and learning how everything is relative. I made fast decisions on this track, as most of WB tracks go, but that quick decision process is representative of my current sense of style and everything. Weirldy, this track is halfway performance and recording, since it's not really something I thought about coming back and fixing, the more I think about it. It was always going to be a one-off sendoff of WB2024, so it's interesting to think of it in this way. Same with falsettos - it was an effort / reward kinda decision...

This year I intend to record new songs that I have composed but are still more like demos, and I don't have a pressing deadline so it will be interesting to see how the process will go when I don't have a time pressure. So far in my experience this has only ever been worse - I spent forever on it and never finished, unless I have a deadline. Quick n dirty is better than slow and not done. anyway you know all about that from the patreon heheh

Thanks for all your music and interesting discussions this year! Best wishes and def let's keep in touch, it is fascinating to follow your journey as well!

YES thank you! I hope I'm not getting too close to pastiche with it, but still having an original voice! Still, it means a lot to be compared to the likes of Zappa and Waits. The 70s thing tho... it is what it is. It's too good to sleep on! I wanna move towards the future but can't help wishing for that sound to return....
