Principium - Live at Geocenter

By horatiuromantic on March 31, 2024 9:11 pm

This week I sat with my friend Wim (soundcloud) and we unearthed a recording we did in nov 2023 at the Geocenter in Copenhagen. This is an improvisation we named Principium. It happened right before the main 1h long performance which we filmed, but this first part only exists as audio.

We did some mastering on it, i.e. tried to make it sound less like it comes from a well, and then I tweaked it some more after he left by making it more crunchy big_smile We plan to tweak it a little more together and release it somewhere with the full performance.

Wim Verbruggen - double bass
Horatiu Roman - upright piano
recorded on Zoom H5
plugins from UAD: Neve 1073, Capitol chambers reverb, LA-2A Silver, Oxide, Studer A800
also added Izotope Ozone Imager for extra stereo width

Timeless music. It could be a track on one of my ECM records. Like it a lot.

Cool collab! Such a nice instrument combination. Don’t what the recording sounded like before messed with it but sounds like you did a good job! Great music for working also.

Absolutely beautiful. The piano in particular is creating a great sense of space, even if the initial recording sounded like it was in a well it's very clear there was a quality recording there that you've remastered beautifully. Wonderful.

Yup yup yup, you should totally release that. The occasional bursts of energy among the sea of reverberating notes end up being a very pleasant experience. That you did it in front of an audience is doubly impressive!

Nitpick: some of the loud piano bursts are distorted. I can't say if that's in the source material or your mastering, but I'd look into polishing that a bit.

100%. Me, I'm loving the bass tone - has both clarity and depth, you can hear the wood in that recording. Great job in both the mastering and the performance from both of you, one of the most amazing things I've heard on WB yet.

Wow, I love this. Your piano part is excellent, I love the rolled chords you play in the upper octaves of the piano. Wim's playing is excellent too, very dark and bold. It's a very mysterious and inquisitive piece.

Quirky and mysterious. Cool to hear you performed this, would be interesting to experience live. I think the audio is quite good considering it is a live recording. Both instruments can be heard well and none takes over.

😍 yep this is awesome. Agreed above def release quality. Does not sound like it was recorded in a well. Bass tone is so nice and the interplay is great

nice to be in the Geocenter with you 2. it is clear you have a close musical connection and play well off each other  heart

I love the sound you're getting there. You can feel the space!

thanks! good to hear you think so. Let's see how it will hold up for the full recording.

Oh yea! Great to hear. The distorted loud bits are totally on purpose. I think it adds some charm when the loud parts distort, they feel loud even at low volumes. But I think it's also a way to mask the bad recording quality - make it bad on purpose in a particular style. Bad meaning 1 microphone in an untreated room - as in not recording studio quality.

nice nice thank you v much! I also like the high notes on this piano, they really sparkle, but it helps a lot to add this tape saturation thing
