Interesting Times

Interesting Times, a piece about being one with the world, but not really maybe always wanting to be one with everything - sometimes you just wanna be yourself.

feat. Levi the drummer piped thru to VD-DEEP and piano+bass midi notes added the hard way in the DAW, because I composed this piece and I can't play it. And I had a pretty busy week so I didn't have time to sit much at the piano and computer. So I added some wacko sounds instead of my regular piano playing, and tbh there is something kinda crazy and hypnotic about it, which I really like. The second part is very wacky!!!

Let me know what u think about the composition, and how would you imagine solos go on this piece? Do I do a vamp in Gminor? I need a different solos bassline I guess? (since it's really tricky to play over the main melody). Or stay in Eb minor just like the ascending end of chorus? I am leaning towards Gm or even Am. It's a bit more simple and everyone can play smth.

Composition was done on the electric guitar, but there I have even less chance of playing it correctly. But it's a crazy composition, the chords are mostly perfect 4ths, and the way the hand looks on the frets when playing is really some outsider art shit. But hey it works cause it sounds cool, and it's super hypnotic after I've been listening and trying to come up with parts for it.

The bridge thingy is actually played with the fretboard hand on the wrong side ahhha. someday I will make a video and re-record, but it's not gonna be tonight bruthaz...

I am so damn tired my eyes are closing as I finish typing and uploading. I was almost ready to ruin the streak again, but somehow I managed another week.......

Whacky is good!

You can do whatever you want to solo over it, it is gonna be great. Damn those robots are getting good! (talking about Levi)

Dope time sig sorcery stuff! That approach usually puts me (a linear thinker) off, but you guys absolutely nailed it here. I love the vibes. I wish I had some wisdom to add on soloing. I'm sure it will be quality no matter which direction you go.

Interesting times is right - you make this sound effortless! Very smooth, good energy and a delightful progression from time to time (hee hee).

Loving all the parallel chord movements. Sounds like the right kind of chaotic jazz, and I imagine it would besuper hard to properly improvise on.

You should get in contact with Sorkfot and have them go wild on this one. Bet that would be one crazy solo.

Thanks! Yea I think I could do it with some practice. Play the theme in unison once, then vamp on 1 chord for the solos is my plan for now.

Thanks! I went with vibes on it, and it landed on 12 or 24 depending how u look at it, with a change to regular 4/4 at some point. the time pressure to finish something in a week decided a lot of things on this one.

Haha, effortless because it's midi quantized stuff big_smile but it goes hard because the bass and drums are hitting many of the same hits. i think that's the secret to making something groove hard. it took me quite a while to figure out, but there it is.

You know what's funny? I made it quite obtuse with these crazy stacked 4ths making weird chords, but if you actually analyze it a little bit, the first four chords are pretty much the same shape draped over a simple melody in the minor scale, then the next four are a 4th higher version of the same, then we go back to the first part, and then the 5 chord movement that ends the phrase is just a weird way to go to a tritone substitution of the 1st chord. so it's actually nothing more than a 1-4 progression in A minor ?!?!?!?

well ok it's a bit more nuanced than that but surprisingly simple*!!!

*disclaimer: I still can't play it properly but this is as far as I got to trying to decode it. I've been out every day instead of practicing tho, maybe thats why.

Would LOVE a Sorkfot collab, if they're up for it! I can create the backing track with some room for solos, just say the word if anyone wanna give it a go.
