I am very happy to share this piece! The title is a message I sent to my friend Marcela when I missed her concert last Friday because I got sick. I thought it was so funny that I had to write a song with it, and here it is. Now I dedicate the song to her. Hope you enjoy it!
‹ Process and notes
Features Levi the drummer from Logic with the "Motown" kit, and me on moog bass, electric piano, vocals (singing, coughing, moaning) and hydrasynth for the wind sounds. I put a ton of effects and made it sound nice and FUNKY and grimy, as I like it. I may have made it a bit more muddy now in the final evening, because I added the synth last for that extra layer of movement in the high end, but it still sounds decent to my tired ears. Let me know what you think of it!
I worked on it during the week, when I came up with the bassline, drums, basic structure with drum pauses and some of the lyrics, and finished it saturday and sunday. I did a bunch of takes for the piano solos, and I would have liked to do a final full take which has more structure and maybe more diverse vocabulary, cause now I can start noticing a lot of similar phrases in the three different solos (and if you heard my previous songs you can probably recognize my piano playing heheh). The most fun was to do the voices and the piano shredding, the most challenging was to figure out a good structure for the song - I tried adding some more melodic lines separate from the vocals, that could tie together the piano playing, but I failed to come up with something catchy so I left it like this.
About that filthy harmony, I really was aiming to get this sick harmony of the Emaj7add4 to E7+9, even tho it slightly clashes with an A in the bass. Basically sounding as nasty and disgusting as I possibly could make it - using stacked 4ths and augmented 4ths over mainly E in the bass, and playing outside the scale, whichever it is. I think I made it work in the end, but I have to practice a lot before I can play with this sound. If you hit a regular E major or minor, you ruin the whole vibe and it just sounds like a major or minor, so the key is to be careful and play around the "obvious" notes. At least that's what is going thru my head as I play this. I thought it would be an interesting observation.
‹ Lyrics
I'll think of you as I cough and moan
The same old feeling makes me feel alone
I'll be disgraced before I let go
I need you baby to heal my soul
I'm sick of trying to fit your mould
I spent one too many nights in the cold
Your witches' brew has no effect on me
I use my own money, cause no lunch is free
I'll think of you as I cough and moan
The same old feeling makes me feel alone
