Ehhhh this week I'm not too happy with my performance, tho the composition has some potential, at least the first two verses I kinda like. I was not too inspired in the week, and Friday I went to a jam session where we had a great great time playing, but I was spent for Saturday. And finally Sunday afternoon I had the idea for the piece after a lot of messing around.

I mostly started from the bass, which I have a hard time playing. The chords are not so inspired, C minor-ish with Eb and F. The B part has a lot more going on but not very important as there is not really any melody there, so just need some chords to get through it. I dumped some strings on it too just for some pizzazz but I feel like I'm overusing this strings method at this point. I was not able to do both piano and vocals in one go this time, but I think I can do it later on if I practice this bassline more. I also maybe put way too much distortion and I couldn't take it out afterwards. Oh well.

I wanted to use some Bernard Purdie drums samples but couldn't find his signature shuffle without so much talking, so I tried to make it with the help of Levi the drummer and he sort of managed pretty well.

Such a cool juxtaposition to hear your voice releasing this angst, while the jazzy keys and steady beat march forward with brave determination underneath it all.

Your boy Levi got me with the high hat science leading up to the vocals. Then you got me with the strings. heart

that's EXACTly what I was going for. thanks for the listen.
I thought about doing more takes to get it even better but I realized there was no way to get it that evening. but even tho it's a rough take I like that it has a lot of the emotion already.

hahh high hat science. that's rich
thx!

I dig that bass line. And the choice of this fuzzy sound is gorgeous, it spills all over and is generous. Surnatural lyrics, love it. This is very 70s paychedelic music territory. Bat country baby!

Solid lyrics and an emotional performance. Very much evocative of the times.

Simple chords with toasty e-pianos works pretty good. And yeah, those robots are getting pretty good too on multiple instruments.

Fun vocal performance. I’d probably try to eq a bit the delays on your vocals, there are some hi-mids that are a bit aggressive, does get a bit over the vocal articulations.

It is always fun to hear your virtuosity on the pianos.

oooh yes def feeling those bassy vibes in the keys that are catchy and get you swaying along.  Love when the strings come in too.  Excellent work!

It may not be perfect technically but I really enjoyed the warm atmosphere and your freedom of exploration in the performance. Somehow reminded me of some of of the bossa/instrumental Beastie Boys jams with Money Mark on keys. Cool track!

Funny you felt less inspired last week, I had a similar feeling.

And yet, you made this gorgeous song. It is it's own thing. Personally, I appreciate the moody rough vibe, we need space for processing these kinds of emotions too, the confusion and disillusionment. But still, there's playfulness and humor here, softening hhd edges. The strings are spot on

…my own ass hahaha

Really like the vocal delivery/performance. The goodbye rings nicely.

Nice synth, caught me by surprise.

Didn’t consciously appreciate the bass until reading the caption. Guess that’s how it often goes with bass. Great groove there also.

really evocative lyrics, there is a lot here to love; the spoken words and the BEAUTIFUL key sounds carry me away heart

The instrumental sounds you chose work so well together here.
A little dark, a little grungy, but still very relaxed especially when the clear strings came in

The performance definitely has potential too, no matter what you say.

Thanks my friend! I dig the bassline too. With a bass player you get a more even and consistent sound than with bass on the piano but I will also learn to master this in time - the organ bass that I play with my drummer is much more steady and I prefer it, but you can't really blend them in a good way with this particular keyboard.

Thanks! it will be fun to look back when all this is over (let's hope it's not ALL this but for sure it will be over someday).

thanks for listening and for the appreciation! I like the feedback to work on the delays on the vocals, they are not as clearly understandable as I would like. I think for sure the solution is at the performance level, but if I had to work with what I have, I guess I could have done a cleaner job. I went with the obscurantism strategy heh

yeaaa. it's important to process these kinda things. I do it mostly through music expression. I tried to do it in silence, but it's really much harder and worse for me... glad I have this method to do it big_smile
thank you for the kind words and for listening

Thank you! haha funny you say so about the bass, these days it's the first thing I notice. But also if I wasn't a nerd about it, it's the kinda thing you notice when it's not there, like good VFX.

that's the guy heart listening back to this groove, it is so far from a proper Purdie groove.... like light years. machines are NEVER going to get us when it comes to making music.

funny thing is my drummer would not even attempt to do a Purdie shuffle when I asked him. I still think he could mess around with it and it would be fine, but his point is: he is going for stuff that he actually knows and lives with and grew up listening, studying and understanding (greek rhythms, melodies, infused into jazz/rock stuff) that he doesn't wanna monkey a groove that will just sound like pretending. which is exactly what I force Levi the drummer from Logic to do for me on the occasional WB big_smile

idk what the right way is, I guess there is no "right way" as long as it sounds good, but I can respect his approach of being true to his core. I'm still in a forever exploration phase, which I think has the benefit of trying so many things that I find my own style through the crazy mix of everything that I like, rather than delving deep into a particular thing... which has its own merits as I can see from focusing on grooves and basslines these last weeks.

thank you! yea it is kinda laid back but has potential to hit hard, as the purdie shuffle is meant to do.

thank you! yea, definitely has potential big_smile I can see it very well I just wish I had figured out a better way to bring it to life. I think this is track is when I realized I am gonna move on from this particular piano. "goodbye" piano heheh
