7 Problems

By horatiuromantic on April 4, 2022 12:01 am

I got a lot of problems

... Ok I don't really have problems but I didn't have a better name for this wacky 7/4 song which is actually an 8/4 song with really weird sample delay that happened by mistake and I just embraced it. The tempo also matches the week number 14 but that's also coincidental. I played around on the m8 with samples and beats and particularly long samples that I randomized and played in the background like noise.

I feel the track is a bit too crowded but I couldn't do anything about it before the deadline. I also added compression which maybe made it even more crowded. But I did manage to play some bassalicious and electric piano combined with the m8 which is a nice process, I am getting better at the workflow. It is also pretty damn fast and strange to play on 7 time, so I am kinda satisfied with the result.

I am also kinda happy with the drums except that again I don't know how to do breaks and transitions so I end up cheezing it. I will have to hunt down some drum samples that also have breaks/fills so I can make more streamlined songs... or befriend a drummer!

Cool beat―the organ jam around 1/2–3/4 through was great.

Best yet

7/4 problems but a beat ain't one. Diggin' the odd time. Happy accident, sounds like.

thanks! I did a lot of fake fast runs (cause I can't really do fast runs) and I feel kinda self conscious about it but I'm willing to keep trying, maybe some day it will click and I'll finally be able to play fast without glitching.

wow the fast runs didn't make it so much in the final track. it actually sounds half decent! took a lot of takes tho believe me.

Smooth! I love the bass lines and tone on this one. 7/4 time signature is bonus points! Embrace it!

Thanks big_smile I do feel it's pretty smooth for playing in 7/4 big_smile I made a conscious decision to go with it after I realized what had happened and I'm glad I did

I like it, kind of reminds me of Medeski, Martin and Wood. Rhythmically interesting and dig the keys. Nice work.

That's what I call a compliment big_smile thanks!

I sneaked backstage a MMW concert once, and asked Medeski about advice for a young musician. He told me to record myself 30 minutes free improvising every practice session and carefully listen to it, to try to figure out the things that I'm doing that I like and don't like. I started doing this (not religiously but tried it now and then) and it helped in a lot of ways, it's great advice. He also advised to just take a bunch of lessons in music of every kind. take a percussion lesson. explore everything. that stuff I have yet to do but it's still on the list for someday. at least I'm experimenting.

Those guys are great!

MMW is the right neigherhood for this. Very well done. High level on every aspect.

Man, this is super smooth.

The whole thing is really nice, but once that electric piano really gets going it achieves this great grooving energy,

Love the organ and electric piano jams. Nice!

Love the dark and smoky vibe on this one. Excellent electric piano solos!

sounds dope. truly.

yasssss thanks everyone for your nice comments ♥ the goal was to be super jazzy and funky so seems like I got that going.

You had me in the first 3 secs with that bass.
