In My Dreams/All I See

By HoolieBrown on February 22, 2026 7:40 pm

I scrapped everything and restarted saturday - not a flex it was just a hard week and I couldn't sit long enough to actually get some decent bits together.  I had this idea a long time ago to try to borrow some ideas from 80s rock groups, make a huge busy wall of sound for a chorus, then try to smash a big busy wall of sound vocal harmony chorus on it and try to get it to work.  Happy with the results - PSA, make lots of room with your eq's as you go instead of trying to dig yourself out of that prob later.

I have never been able to get my voice to work with anything close to synthwave or 80s rock or whatever this is so that was the other big stretch.  I'm also pretty happy with that and I learned a lot both on performance and mix sides.

I did two takes for vox this time so I could double the lead on the chorus and try more options for the harmony lines in the last part of each verse.  I was pitchy and didn't have time to fix any of the squelchy stuff from the tuning, but fortunately it didn't need much.

Everything tracked into m8 either through a boss katana go or an md421 through a ua 276 as a dumb interface.

all synths were native to the M8, Linndrum and 909 samples.

Lyrics were throwaway at first, just looking for easy lines to land in rhythm, and tho filled with cliche, it ended up meaning a lot more than what I intended - funny how that happens.  It's about getting older and still having your ambition.  Getting older - funny how that happens, too.

A distant voice to remember
Will it lead or am i running around
I see you there beside me
no matter how they followed me down
I could never miss a heartbeat
Ive got to stay in the moment
now I’m driving through the backstreets
Is it all that you wanted

I’ve been looking for it all my life
Talks cheap,  I’m not a pretender
Hit the stage then I drive all night
never stop I will never surrender
I been looking for a place I’ve known
in my dreams it’s all I see ther
I know I’m gonna find my home
What’s a home if you won’t be there

Im never taller than my shadow
I’m never one left playing the part
I never stay when the lights go down
but I’ve never been afraid of the dark
We can put it all behind us
Give it one last try
Are we better of together
Or should we let this die

I’ve been looking for it all my life
Talks cheap,  I’m not a pretender
Hit the stage then I drive all night
never stop I will never surrender
I been looking for a place I’ve known
in my dreams it’s all I see there
I know I’m gonna find my home
What’s a home if you won’t be there

This is great. Listened before reading your post, and immediately thought late 80s wall of sound pop, maybe a little like Starship - you nailed that assignment. Flavors of Mark Knopfler in your voice, along with that sort of smoother pop feeling in your verses - the doubling comes across nicely. Really enjoying your versatility!

Proper Song!!! Let's keep getting older...

So good! Well done on the composition and production! To be a true 80s hit now you just need a bridge and a semitone higher chorus at the end… smile

Really cool to read about your prcess! And actually lyrics are decent, didn’t think about it until i read the description. Cliches exist for a reason… nice little guitar solo too!

Thanks so much - def out of my comfort zone and listening back something took one of the reverb sends off the lead vox track, but not gonna focus on that, time to move on to week 9 big_smile.  Loving everything your doing, will take more time to comment soon.

First of thanks, and second off that is some amazingly distilled and powerful encouragement.  Yeah - let's indeed keep getting older smile.

Thank you so much!  You're spot on with the bridge to modulation - wish I had time.  I'll make another one in the genre soon and throw it in - I'm a big fan of that trope xD.

Cool song
