Dark Rain

By GregVK on January 11, 2026 8:05 pm

This week's beat was an exercise in letting go of perfection.

As a freelance songwriter/producer, I'm used to mix templates and editing plugins/workflow, like Melodyne, Autotune, Vocalign, etc.
For a long time I've been hesitant to record any instruments raw into my M8. I felt like I'd first need to record into my DAW, edit and then sample into the M8.

Basically I just avoided the whole process, despite really wanting to add my vocals, and guitars to my M8 songs.
Stupid, I know... But anyway. Being a human is weird!

I was working on another song, but got stuck somewhere along the way. So on Wednesday I switched to this one. With even less time to make this song, I had to give up trying to make it "perfect".

I ended up doing a bunch of stuff I'd never do and still love the end result. For example:
-Letting lyrics just happen instead of outlining, multiple drafts and days of editing.
-Recording a vocal into my M8 in a single take (the chopped up vocal in the chorus).
-Recording the final acoustic and vocal section with my Shure SM7B and Rode Nt1, but with zero editing or eq in the DAW, just a little compression and a cassette emulator.

So I learned something from making this song.
Use whatever tools and skills you have on hand to make art. You don't need everything to follow your perfect workflow for maximum quality. And just going with what's in front of you, will often result in a far more "you" version of what you would have created.

Loving how weekly beats forces you to work with the time and resources you have, rather than waiting for the perfect conditions.

Lyrics:

Dark rain is coming down on me,
So hard that I can barely see.
And it might wash away the road.
Hope I remember my way home.

The vocals were a pleasant surprise.

Had to play it again to absorb the intricacies.  Solid backbone, and then you let the song do what it needs to do.

Would love to hear a continuation of this track

Thank you!
Maybe when I have time I'll make an extended version.

This is incredible. really dig the opening sequence with the reversed guitar thing. Also the mixing and choice of sounds is amazing + the vocals hit just right

Sweet tune, sounds great and inspired too.

Awesome pleasant beat. I like how you worked around limitations of the challenge with pitching the vocals. Perfect for a slow, rainy day here in Tokyo.

Thank you so much!
I'm always a little self conscious with my mixing, so it's really nice to get that compliment. Thanks!

Haha nice! From Johannesburg to Tokyo!
Thanks for the kind words, man!

This is so good! I see what you meant about it being happy/sad. I love that whole last section with the vocals and the acoustic guitar. Great job!

Very sweet
Do let those strings sing

And I will do. ๐Ÿ˜

Wow, such a nice beat with amazing sounds!

Very nice lofi beat, comforting like a warm blanket. Lovely mix and awesome sounddesign too.

Vocals are a cool addition, wasn't expecting them to come in so clean at the end. Very hard hitting to change things up at the end and take it away so suddenly.

Really great mix of sounds, the range of textures makes it feel like a journey with a new view around every corner. Love it!

Love the lyrics!! Had a few listens already and feel the emotion from the lyrics!

Great track, some really nice sounds, love that vocal thatโ€™s pitched and stretched, makes it sound like an instrument, this is so cool, added bonus with the vocals at the end, you have a great voice.

Thank you! Like I said in a previous comment, it's great to get positive feedback on the mix and sound design, since it's something I've been working on, but also not super confident about yet.

Also glad you enjoy the vocals. I liked the chopped, pitched vocals, but felt like I also wanted the lyrics to be expressed clearer, hence the outro.

Thanks again!

Thanks! Yeah, the pitched, stretched and chopped vocals are a lot of fun to work with. I come from a less electronic music background, so learning about these techniques and workflows has been eye opening. So cool to record something, and then explore other ways it can be used.
Glad you like that outro too!

nice lessons learned, thx for sharing! and nice lofi beat and chopping! not the biggest fan of the chipmunks style vocals but cool vocal lines at the end!

Haha yeah, I know the pitched vocals aren't for everyone, but I'm glad you found other things you enjoyed in the song. ๐Ÿ˜
