How enforceable are CC/ARR type declarations on a track, anyway? Ive always wondered about it. I mean I can say my track's all rights reserved til I'm blue in the face but nothing's gonna stop Grey Worldwide from stealing it and sticking it in a Honda ad if they really wanted to. Onus is then on me to chase it up in court, isnt it?

You specifically can not file a court motion in a US Federal court if you haven't previously registered a copyright with the US Copyright office.  It's not a bad idea to file for every piece of work you create.  You can compile multiple songs under one "work" and file them all together for the same price ($35 if done online using ECO).  For example, take all of your songs from 2013 and create a master file that you will submit electronically after filing, pay the $35, and every song in the collection is now registered.  You can also attach lyrics sheets, music staffs, etc, in a separate electronic file which is still included in the $35 cost.

It's advantageous to do this because your filing is considered prima facie evidence that you own the copyright which means that any challenger has to prove that you don't.  If you don't register, then theoretically, another party can steal your work (since you're making it available to the entire world via the internet) and register it themselves at which point they have prima facie evidence that they own it and you will have to prove that they don't.

I'm not a lawyer, by the way, so don't construe anything I've written here as legal advice but simply as my interpretation of the pertinent US laws.

My understanding is that when you release something under a CC license, that doesn't mean you're giving up your claim to copyright but that you are granting either limited or unlimited (depending on the license) rights for others to use your work.

No 4/4 sounds interesting. For a future week maybe tempo and/time signature changes in a song.

Since I'm more of a singer than a musician, I have to write lyrics for my songs.  I find that's the hardest part of my composition so I actually try to stay a week ahead on lyrics--so far it's working.  Occasionally, I'll be fooling around with the guitar and come up with something that I think would go well in a song and then write lyrics to go with it, but usually it's the other way around.  A couple times, when the stars, moon, Jupiter and the Antares Nebulae are all aligned, I've been able to match existing lyrics to an existing musical idea.

For me, it's not a question of procrastination because if I had my way I'd spend almost all of my time trying to make music.  But I have to try to prioritize since I have a day job, a wife, and a family.  Then, my actual music making time has to be divided among doing and learning the massive amount of things I don't know.

I like the shared melody idea. It will be interesting to hear how different everyone will be when starting from the same melody.  I would like to clarify that whoever writes the initial melody should be willing to release it under a CC-BY license to make everything kosher.

Or CC0, even less trouble.

Yes, that would be even better so we don't have to remember to attribute every time the song is posted anywhere.  Or we could find a melody that's pre-1922 or whatever year that's already public domain.

great track man! big_smile

Thank you.  I was lip synching when I made the video and just made a lot of faces. :-)

ppl don't seem to mind acoustics here big_smile

One day, when I'm rich and famous, I plan to build a booth with acoustic dampeners.  Until then, my bedroom is my studio.

I'm glad I got an idea going without even meaning to.  And thanks for the thumbs up for me to do what I was planning, Lyons.

I'm curious what the community thinks about the idea of using the same lyrics in several different styles for multiple songs?  I wrote some lyrics for this week's contribution, but when I sat down to record music, my muse took me in a totally different way than I had expected when I wrote the lyrics and I ended up only using the first verse and the chorus one time and I like how it turned out that way, but I still want to write a different song with the whole thing using the more commercial ABABCB structure.

I'm gonna make myself a shirt when I complete it.
