http://nicksworldofsynthesizers.com/ Check this guy out. He makes his own synths some of which he used to play in a band called Pink Grease.

Quite an apt thread: a new album by Ruby Throat arrived in the post this morning and, whilst I had planned to work on some tracks today, I can't stop listening to it. Perhaps not to everyone's taste but Ruby Throat move me like no other music can.

this project's gotten me really productive. this week i've already finished a track, and i'd rather keep it secret for a release, so i'm working on a second track, and i even really like it!

I think I've done that every week. I guess its probably a good thing smile

I feel pretty good about the fact I'm 4 for 4, despite having what feels like no free time. I've not always been completely happy with the tracks but I've noticed an improvement in my discipline and general approach to writing music (evident from the fact that all my tracks have been done on a Sunday and uploaded earlier each week). I can see this being a cathartic year if nothing else smile

Bang! Done smile This is either getting easier or I'm less bothered about the tunes I may. I suspect a bit of both but more the former. This week is another guitar a vocal track - I'm quite pleased with it but it still needs a bit of fine tuning. Again, it was all written and recorded today.

TBH, I feel really bad as I don't get time to listen to the majority of tracks and even when I do I've not commented, mainly because when I have chance to listen its normally on in the background. If I get a track up early one week I think I might make an effort to use the free time to listen to and comment on other people's tracks smile

done, uploaded and I hate it... roll on next week.

Okay, week 3 is slapdash as expected but its nearly done. Still trying to write lyrics but keep needing to take breaks every few minutes to let my brain catch its breath.

Yeah but I need to get up early on a Sunday to make a start on the track I've not had time to work on all week... after I've done all the other stuff I need to do on a Sunday that is.

Hint for week 3: Something rushed... again. I wish I had time to work on stuff before the weekend!

Best way I've found to get past writers block (for lyrics), is to pick a vocalist you like and imagine them singing the song, in their style. Like imagine Simon Le Bon singing it or The Bee Gees or Sister Sledge. The differences in vocal styles will nudge you towards certain notes, phrasing and lyrics.

I actually tried to do that for my first track but none of the vocal styles I liked seemed to fit with the backing sad

TBH, I can feel this getting easier as time goes by as I've not really completed many tracks inn the last few years and I had so much going on in my head for week 1 that it came out a bit confused and poopy. But this week I feel a bit more comfortable about and the ideas are flowing. I think the first couple of weeks will be like defragging my brain.

I literally finished and uploaded mine with a few minutes to spare. Everything went completely to pot and I ended up having to record an acoustic guitar on an 8 track, make up some shoddy lyrics and ad lib the vocal melody as I recorded (at about 11.30pm) with no time to mix it. So am I happy? No, not really. I do like the instrumental part though, but I'm hoping to put a bit more time in next week smile
