So - now the year is ticking on and many of us are back at work, and in Australia, still celebrating many a summer drink on the weekend, it turns out that a tune a week takes a little more effort than realized! (for some of us)

How did things fare this week?  As well as creative - I'm curious about the time management factor.  I ultimately started work on a tune mid week but came back to finish it on Sunday to realize I wasn't in the same headspace.  Notes were just not flowing.  So I started from scratch on a new tune with totally different vibe. But then didn't have time to finish it / fix problems!  I'm finding it monumentally hard to come back to a track and work on it in the same week.

Track wise, I'm about 50% happy with the result. Parts needed redoing majorly - especially the drums and bass.  But everything is recorded as waveform and neither synth has the ability to save patches (should have taken photos of the knobs!).  I'd add a bridge section and more structure too.  If I think of it simply as a recording / engineering test then I'm pretty happy - especially seeing most of it was played on the tiny 202 membrane key pads.  But it's not something I'd ever consider releasing in it's current state!!  I'm considering 2013 for "weekly fix up" where I go back over all this years tunes and fix the problems.

and you can't exactly take half hour naps at work or school

You can, but if you happen to start snoring it can be of detrimental effect!  (we have crash out couches at work - and people can generally hear if I'm having cheeky a nap!)   Man, that Monophasic sleep looks good about now.

Heyheyhey.... quality MiniMachine.. can't wait ;-)

Oh shiiiiiiiii--!  I forgot to trim off the start of the drums!  "all right... this time I'm recording!... fuckin' hell" is clearly audible on the version I uploaded.  Proves I should probably listen to my file before making small changes and uploading ;-)

My tune is not what I expected - more about textures and atmostpheres rather than any melodic structure.  All improved in live takes off analogue synths.  And manually riding tempo knob in step sequencer mode to get things in time.  Messy.

ps.  just in case anyone elses MP3 player is truncating the ID3 tag like mine just did... the tune is called WB03 - Sequential 202 (on analog synths) ..... not WB03 - Sequential 202 (on anal

Ahhhh man.  Cheers!  So much pressure now :-P  This week and next week will be utter shite from me. 0 time.  I have an hour to make a tune, eat dinner, finish notes for tomorrows meeting, sleep.  It's going to suck hardcore :-P

I'm already out of time this week and entire weekend is blocked with up with shooting a doco, speccing up the venue for Blip Melbourne, 3 birthdays / drinks and more.  I'm considering staying sober and leaving early on Sat night so I can work on a tune!!

Then I've got bugger all time the following week as I'm off to a music fest (RSF) on the Wednesday until the following Monday.  5 days of work need doing on Monday and Tues!!  So going to be a couple of low quality weeks for me I think.

Mine was a complete surprise!  I always used to throw together fast chill tunes as a kid and I guess it was nice to know I could still pull it off, but at a higher quality.  My main issue was I ran out of time to get the quality of performance higher.  Looking forward to exploring the style more though; especially now I have drums sorted out which have always been my stumbling block.

>how does everyone see their music progressing this year?

I'm sure my engineering will improve and in those late-night creative moments I'll move in musical ways I haven't before - but I think my main progress will be in my attitude towards composition.  Things like not being scared of releasing music I'm not 100% happy with, or finding the right way to approach writing if I'm procrastinating, or learning how to finish a tune without going around in tweaking circles!!

haha, i like how you figure out you're dreaming and instead of like flying to a harem, you go to weeklybeats.com

I dunno, I can appreciate - instead of dreaming about some sort of awesomeness I keep dreaming about things like forgetting to print the BlipOz tees. *sigh*

smile

Meanwhile I'm dreaming about time base correctors losing sync when the VJ's start bending consoles.  And video drop outs due to cable runs being too long!  Can't wait until Sat and we sort this out...  ;-)

I smile whenever I see this :-]  I thought I was going to be making metal last week and it took a turn for the complete opposite!!

Third time lucky, perhaps.

!!! Not the best combo.  You really are not having the best of luck!!  Now we get two tunes into 2013 :-)

Between some odd latency probs and MEGA lack of sleep (it's 5:32am our time) I've got my track in.  Totally just made it up in the final hours and it's mostly improved and barely holding structurally.  Totally ran out of time and would redo it if I could - but I guess this is what it's all about!!   Drums took more than 50% of my time - the controller was good but ultimately it doesn't quite feel like a real kit so I ended up tweaking the hell out of the drums.  But learnt a TON as this is the first time I've touched VSTi drums.  NOW I SLEEP!!  (looking forward to hearing everyones tunes tomorrow)

[posted twice by mistake because i'm that scattered!]

Yup!  Saturday night - 1am - haven't started anything.  Still hung over from last night too!!   I started recording a guitar track last week - but my 20 years old strat copy is useless in the studio... it's buzz / hum from the pickups are massively loud.  I've tried turning all monitors off and unplugging everything in the area but I think it's just stuffed.  So back at square one.  I might just record it anyway and subject you all to layers of 50hz hum!!
