Partch Improvisation & Variation

By fc on January 10, 2016 11:38 pm

Well, not a great start to the year. I just have no time over the next two months. I was going to get something up and running with SuperCollider, but didn't really have the time to do more than some rough sketches. So I whipped this up in an hour or so.

Material is improvised using Harry Partch's 43-tone scale, effected with Live, and then added to/varied electronically.

Still having doubts about my capacity to do WB this year, but we'll see.

Well, I certainly enjoy your WB contributions; they're a real inspiration for me.

Oh man, hi! Thanks. And also thanks for getting me into Subotnick two years ago - that's been really great.

I like it. A fine choice with the Partch scale. That guy was a hoot.

The joys of last minute creation. I did mine over a couple of hours at around 5 this morning.

As far as SuperCollider is concerned, you can probably still use those SC sketches as they are, record them and treat them as samples later if you don't have time to do fully realised patches. I do it all the time. It's also a good idea to hit record as soon as you start coding so you can capture any happy accidents. Though, I do keep some boilerplate code handy using snippets in Sublime Text just in case I want to turn a patch into something more substantial really quickly.

Thanks for the tip! I could have done the sequencing thing using material made in SC, but I want to do all SC stuff completely within SC.

It feels as if the music is pulling on me...! That is so fascinating

As often happens on WB, I don't have a clue how you do what you do, but I like it.

Very cool piece! Hope you'll find time to do WB this year, always enjoy listening to your work.

Really good atmosphere you built here, Vinpous. Hope you get some more time off so we could chat code sometimes.

And it's been great to see you back in 2016!

Baby steps, Vince. You have 52 weeks to work towards SuperCollider purity.

SuperCollider... I don't know how you do it.  Great lil peice mate.  Those tones are wild.

Interesting textures. Dig it!

While that's true, it is not the point for me.

No SuperCollider here, not yet. Couldn't get it to bend to my wishes in time! (And by that I mean I couldn't get my head to bend to SCs wishes...)

Thanks, man!

Maybe. But when I started with SuperCollider, I introduced it in stages. First, getting synthesis down and then taking that and playing with it in Pro Tools or Ableton. Then I moved effects and routing into SC. Then patterns. Then sequencing. And still sometimes, I won't do everything in code. The same is true for things I've done in MaxMSP. But the best thing about it is that I got the reward of producing a work every time I ventured into SuperCollider land.

Anyway, good luck. SuperCollider is a deep and rewarding rabbit hole to go down. You'll have a blast.

Also, I'm going to take a second look into Atom as a text editor for SuperCollider (the built-in one is eh). Last time I used it, it was pretty buggy, so I went back to Sublime Text. But I'll let you know how I get on.
