W29 - Generative Illness

Contract team liked my work and I am set to work with them if they win the bid. Summer program too small so will not be working with kids. Incredibly sick. Been in bed for 3 days. Ate some bad food and have had a permanent headache, body aching, and stomach issues. Have not been able to eat anything new for a few days. Just starting to get appitite again. Cao Gío helped to alleviate aches temporarily. Submitting early because going to celebrate memorial unveiling over the weekend. Meeting with family. Leaving tonight. Not much to talk about. Mostly been asleep. Time spent recovering. Will see older cousins and aunts on Viet side of the family. Bench made to honor passed away father over a decade later in one of his favorite spots in Pacific Grove. Will have to drive 2 hours tonight. Called a cool uncle much to my delight. A bit surprised at that.

Played with generative tools to imitate eurorack work in ableton. Trying out Drift synth as starting point. The composition is generative but the over all structure is not. planned for when the 4 layers come in and leave but not the exact notes played or their rythmes. Added automated sends twoards the end of composition.

Recored separate layers in one shot. Could never get the composition to play in the exact same way ever again. Quick session made in about an hour between hot flashes. Lower effort affair.

I love it when you have stuff that's being generated by certain rules (random or not) and you can never replicate them again. You could obviously bounce it to audio and have it be the same everytime, but what's the fun in that!

Always a fan of generative work especially as I don't fully comprehend the complexities of it smile  Love those noisy bits that interact with the wavy synth lines.  Visuals of ants working in unison to carry away a fallen comrade.  Especially enjoy those stuttering bits as it peaks at the end.  Hope you are feeling better real soon.

Oof, tough break sad glad it sounds like you're doing better this week. Definitely a slightly unsettling but also really cool feeling on this track. Generative stuff seems so interesting, will have to dabble in this some day.

Agreed! There is something liberating about creating something unique that but disappears into the universe.

Before I knew the term in college (2008-ish) I was making generative stuff for different art installations. I've always really liked the concept as it ends up surprising you even if you've built the thing. The works and there output end up being a black box even though you might know how the sausage is made. That mystery and surprise is a great feeling.

I was quite happy with how this one came out upon listening again smile

You absolutely should try generative stuff! I'd be really curious to see what you'd come up with. I mostly work by myself but sometimes generative creatitions can feel like working with different improving musicians with the right parameters. I always end up saything things like "oh that's an interesting choice", "I wouldn't have done that", or "I would have never come up with that".

It's also great to shake out and test ideas too. Sometimes I start with a genereative thing I like and take the good sections and use it a spring board for more traditional compositions.

There is a lot there!
