W28 - Everyone Loves Supersaws

By ENC_ on July 14, 2024 6:20 pm

Applied for some contract work. Spent a day working on quick case study for previous job and sprucing up requested pdf for client. A bit of anxiety about it but hopeful. Partner's support and advice really helped. Being reviewed. Cleared email after 6+ months neglect. No word on summer science program with kids. Friend's cameback from honeymoon in Japan. Brought back gifts and hung out with the local group. Nice to see baby and family growing. Not sure I would have gotten it done. Sneaking bike rides in late. Rode to the park to write song when burnt out at home. Was working on track and found out former president had been shot. Honestly just felt like another Saturday. Burnt out on news and discorse. Focused on the day to day and things I can control more and more. Mobile setup and environmental change helped. Finished TNG with partner and started DS9. Excited to introduce a deeper cut of star trek to her. Talked to upstairs neighbor Kip about scifi shows. Last bike trip to the grocery store didn't have enough space on bike to cary larger load. Took car with partner. Wandered shopping center together. Picked up things to rearrange apartment. Enjoyed picking things out together. Went to cat shelter. Almost pushed to adopt another cat. Very sweet cat named Sweetie and bonded blind cats named Jimmy and Dwight. Rilled up Kittens and gave donations. Looking at DO live synth options and setups. Found good deal on HS8 set but no money rn. Underwhelemed by modern options currently. Dreadbox Typhon maybe? Not sure about UI or UX of box (also life). Mopho may be fine. looked into elctro smith daisy again. Went to Aphex Twin listening party with partner. Underwhelmed by listening experience. Some guy's poorly informed playlist on nice sound system. Glad we went still. Good to try new things.

Started track on Saturday with Ableton and Fors tools. Experimenting with Supersaw detuning, additive synthesis, and microtuning. Used hand Qwrety keyboard playing and modular tools to generate initial samples. Played with sample resolution by repitching and speeding up, rendering then halving playback speed in M8. Used samples in M8 to write sections and compose. Added internal synths and processing with generative modulation to add movement and variance. Got stuck and took a break/transfered work to park. S-1 introduced as suport. Used old S&H patch that fit. Finished new section and came home to finish out M8 work on couch. Rendered stems. Recorded S-1 through M8 processing with DR-40. Bumped record quality to 48kh 16bit. Took parts back to Ableton for light mixing and mastering. Revisited on Sunday.

Slight timing adjustments made in Ableton with light processing and break truncating. May need to redone for better M8 play back. 303 line addition? Jungle sub sines? Tried to blend different tunings together with footwork and light break elements. Interesting experiment but not sure of mix is to liking. Time will tell.

Supersaws are great, for sure.

Very cool. Percussive elements definitely hold the track together - and I confess I'm also really curious how a 303 line would play on top of this at some point. Awesome track.

Really hyped beat, especially love the one that comes in at 2:08. Lots of "bonus" percussion supplementing the kick/snare so effectively. Great variety throughout, love how unsettling some of these sounds are.

Love the groove throughout but the section at 2:08 with the added percussion is awesome.  Part of it sounds like the flintstones about to run away in my head hah.  But seriously love the complexity of it.  Like it's a breathing organic beat.  That dark synth melody at 2:50 hits so nicely.  Love supersaws but especially in dark synth territory.  Also Too Many Zoos +1

yesssss sufficiently creeped out by the supersaws, and that ending gets COOKING

I've foolishy not been a fan. I've been hesitant to incorporate them because they are all over some electronic music that I felt was cliche. Honestly, they are great and can be anything you want them to be. I just needed a more open mind.

Listening back now, I really wish I had taken the time to add the 303. I was being a bit lazy it seems. Thanks for checking it out.

Unsettling feels like the correct word tongue It's probably one of my more challenging tacks this year. The variety became necessary to break up the more unpleasant parts. Looking back now, I probably could have ridden the line between comfortable and unsettling with a bit more finesse.

Haha I like the Flinstones comparison. I can see it now smile Too Many Zoos were a really cool listen. I forget who had written about it their weekly beat but I am glad they did otherwise I'd never have checked them out.
